I love Autumn it’s my favourite time of year.

I always think of autumn being October and November. September is always too warm for real autumn coziness etc.

However , in November it seems everything is turning to Christmas!!! I still want to put Autumn things around , like lovely leaves etc.

In the USA they really celebrate Autumn up to the end of November with thanksgiving. They keep pumpkins around and autumn foliage etc until then .

Here , people are now putting Xmas trees up in November.

I feel my fave season is being stolen away

That is a personal choice surely?
Don't rush it if you don't want to- let others do what they want to do.
It's my favourite season too, but I take my time toe enjoy it.

vinoelle · 17/09/2020 08:17

I agree I love autumn, it’s so beautiful. Especially if you live in the countrySide, like me. Sadly my favourite autumn thing of a crisp cold muddy dog walk followed by pub won’t be the same this year!

Fressia123 · 17/09/2020 08:18

Thanksgiving is a harvest festival so it makes sense . I think the problem is that we don't have any festivals/celebrations after bonfire night. I'm.with you though.

vinoelle · 17/09/2020 08:19

I also think there should be more focus on ‘harvest time’. Do they still do this in schools? I think it’s so important to have an awareness of seasonal changes to produce and where food comes from

JalapenoDave · 17/09/2020 08:20

I love Autumn too, it's such a beautiful time of year (I was married in Autumn last year with the hope of stunning autumnal weather...but we got heavy rain instead, oh well!) But yes OP I think in this country we don't really "celebrate" autumn, probably because of all the Christmas hype?

speakout · 17/09/2020 08:23

I am Pagan, and I celebrate three harvest festivals- lughnasadh (Lammas), Mabon and Samhain ( Halloween).
So a busy time in my house.

Cocomarine · 17/09/2020 08:35

When someone puts up a Xmas tree makes no difference whatsoever to the weather. Just keep your own pumpkin and lead displays going, and go out for a walk in the park / forest / fields - whatever is possible for you.

Readysteadife · 17/09/2020 08:37

I think what I am trying to say is Christmas is thrust on us too early these days .

Aw ! This is great fellow autumn lovers 😀😀😀😀

I feel like people also get too autumnal too early . I saw a lady on Sunday wearing a lovely autumnal hat and jumper , but it was BOILING!!!!

She should held fire for a few weeks , but maybe she puts her Xmas tree up in November

You’re nuts! You’re accusing someone of starting autumn too early because they feel the cold more than you, or simply made a mistake in how warm it would be when they chose their clothes that morning? 🤣

I think you need to stop taking your cues from other people, thinking too much about other people’s choices, and just concentrate on yourself.

otterbaby · 17/09/2020 08:48

I keep all of my pumpkins and autumn bits around until the end of November. I think Christmas decorating this year will probably start on the 28th of Nov 😊

SonjaMorgan · 17/09/2020 08:59

I love autumn. A house in our village had a beautiful autumn wreath up last year, until Christmas. I did consider one and decorating but I am too lazy. I do bring out a vintage blanket to put on the sofa, start making soups and stew, and make sure we have hot chocolate in at this time of year.

Sanitisethat · 17/09/2020 09:01

I totally agree OP. October and November are lovely, cosy months and Christmas should be reserved exclusively for December! I’m always baffled by the desire of some people to put their trees up in November just so they can be sick of the sight of them at Christmas!

Cocomarine · 17/09/2020 09:06

Except presumably they’re not sick of the sight of them by Xmas, or they wouldn’t do it? My stepdaughter loves Xmas - always the first to want the tree up, and always the one saying we should keep it up until 12th night.

Readysteadife · 17/09/2020 09:10

@SonjaMorgan I have an autumn wreath ! I love it .

I had mine up until December , the house opposite me put their Christmas wreath up in November 😂

I understand the spirit of what you're trying to say, OP. I love autumn too. It's the one season in the UK that doesn't disappoint. I think this year it is more important than ever to embrace the season and really enjoy it - not wish it away. Personally, I quite like September as an autumnal month. You get the benefit of daytime warmth but the cosiness of chilly evenings and fresh mornings. I don't usually decorate for autumn except for having a dish of conkers in the kitchen...I'm such a kid that I can't walk past conkers and not pick them up! This year I am going to take some inspiration from the US and have a wreath for my front door, at the very least.

Hopefully, as we are all going out a lot less (not at all in my case, except for dog walks & school run) the madness of marketing Christmas from September onwards won't affect us Smile .

WinWinnieTheWay · 17/09/2020 09:14

I definitely agree that starting Christmas is November is too soon. I like Autumn walks, comfort food and lighting the fire. I do also like Christmas, just at Christmas time.

I can't stand January and February though, nothing good going on there either from a weather, festival or countryside point of view.

Readysteadife · 17/09/2020 09:18

I just want to say I love Christmas too ! Just in December !!

Oh, that's made me so sad. It's one of my favourite things in the world, especially if you can nab a lovely cosy spot by the fire Sad
BlusteryShowers · 17/09/2020 09:46

Autumn is the best. There's something about the light at this time of year that just makes everything look it's best.

tsmainsqueeze · 17/09/2020 09:51

I love autumn to , just don't give in to christmas pressure , do your own thing.
I remember as a teenager loving the harvest sale at my local pub , all the old men would display then auction what they had home grown , even in my wild teenage there was something grounding and secure about it , and it was a visual treat .

TheDuchessofMalfy · 17/09/2020 10:00

I really love autumn too. Cold crisps walks are amazing. My favourite weather is when you need a coat and also sunglasses.

I love the acorns on the ground at this time of year just as autumn is starting. And then a bit later when you get the first smell of autumn. Fabulous time.

TheDuchessofMalfy · 17/09/2020 10:00

My birthday is November so Christmas definitely doesn’t start until we’ll after that!

BiBabbles · 17/09/2020 10:55

There are things that someone can choose to do to avoid it, but it does seem to feel like it's everywhere earlier and earlier.

Even my kids comment on it in annoyance these last few years and this year DDs' school is already having them take part in a Christmas card contest. We get that they have to go through the judging and printing the winners, but it was just Confused when that was announced as their art projects for the start of term.

VestaTilley · 17/09/2020 10:55

CofE primary schools and churches still do Harvest Festival in late Sept/early Oct- probably not this year, but usually - always one of my favourite services of the year.

And in this house, Advent is important, so no Christmas decs up before 18th Dec or thereabouts - then they stay up until Twelfth Night.
