I love Autumn it’s my favourite time of year.

I always think of autumn being October and November. September is always too warm for real autumn coziness etc.

However , in November it seems everything is turning to Christmas!!! I still want to put Autumn things around , like lovely leaves etc.

In the USA they really celebrate Autumn up to the end of November with thanksgiving. They keep pumpkins around and autumn foliage etc until then .

Here , people are now putting Xmas trees up in November.

I feel my fave season is being stolen away

I agree with you completely!! We celebrate Thanksgiving and have a busy St Andrew's Day so don't even start thinking about Christmas until Advent Sunday. We also have friends who have a Martinmas feast every year with lots of harvest-y food. I love spinning out autumn with as many festivals as possible!

I love autumn too. My absolute favourite

You can choose how you experience the season and it doesn't have to be rushed.

But I agree the retail world are always ridiculously ahead, that really should stop. Who even goes to the shops anymore, will just be more tat in landfill this year.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/09/2020 11:22

Well just do your Autumn thing for as long as you want to and move onto Christmas when you decide the time is right.

Just suit your own timescale and leave others to theirs?

I decorate for every season. My autumn is September, October and November and then I switch to winter. Christmas decorations go up about a week before Christmas and into January, then it's back to winter.
It's personal choice. Celebrate how you want.

The warmth of September is one of my favourite aspects of autumn. Warm, but not overwhelmingly so, like summer can be.

YukoandHiro · 17/09/2020 11:42

Ooh @omega3 I love this idea. How do you decorate?

Chipsahoy · 17/09/2020 12:00

Actually Americans tend to put trees up the day after thanksgiving which is normally a week before December starts.

My dh is American so we follow traditions. I put up autumn decor in mid sept and then add Halloween decor in mid October. The Halloween decor comes down on 1st nov and thanksgiving decor gets added to the autumn decor. Then after thanksgiving I pick it al away, clean the house and 1st dec the tree goes up!
Love it.

I totally agree OP. October and November are lovely, cosy months and Christmas should be reserved exclusively for December!

I agree too. I absolutely love Christmas, and like the tree to be up on or shortly after 1st Dec, but would not dream of doing so before December. No Christmas shopping before December either. Autumn is beautiful Smile

@YukoandHiro - pretty simply, actually. I use the mantelpiece in the living room with a couple of fake candles - smooth in spring and summer, gothicy ones with 'wax drips' for autumn and winter. A string of lights as well - I go for the battery powered ones with a timer, 6 hours on, 18 off. Just does the evening nicely. The candles are the same. The lights are different for every season. Leaves in autumn, conifer leaves for winter, delicate orchids in spring and roses in the summer.

Added to that are some seasonal touches. Maybe a vase of flowers, holly berries, a sprig of flowering rosemary, jasmine or some daisies etc. Autumn I generally use acorns, different types of fir cones, some of those mini pumpkins you get from the supermarket. Maybe a squash from the garden.

A few years ago, time seemed to be slipping by me so fast. Since I've been doing this, I find it quite grounding to see the same seasonal display for 3 months. It almost acts as an 'anchor' for my sense of time, if that's not too fanciful! And of course, it's pretty to look at.

Autumn is my favourite time of year too.

Even though I've worked most of it, we've had such a lovely summer, the thought of autumn doesn't fill me with horror this year. In fact, I just want this year over now so I wouldn't mind going into actual hibernation from December to March.

I think the UK looks its best in May and October/November.
