To be miffed a company did not print my review

I will start by saying that I have too much time on my hands. I'm on mat leave with a 3 month old baby that sleeps a lot.

I have a bee in my bonnet over a company that hasn't printed my review. I bought 2 face masks that I saw advertised on Facebook. They had rave reviews, they were the most comfortable facemasks ever! So breathable! 5 stars! I paid around £16 altogether for 2 masks. I received and thought they were ok, but not brilliant. Noticed that the fabric plucked really easily but thought no more about it.

A week or so later I had an email asking me to review the mask. As already stated I have too much time on my hands so I sent them a 3 star review mentioning that the fabric plucked easily. I kept seeing the masks advertised on Facebook and wanting my moment of glory I went to see my review in print but was dismayed to find it not there! A few more 5 star reviews but not my 3 star review.

I emailed them to ask if they were only printing 5 star reviews and they basically said yes! Telling me that the negative reviews must be because the customer received a faulty product so it doesn't make sense to post them. I replied saying my mask wasn't faulty it is made of fabric that plucks easily. They've now refunded me to shut me up.

I'm naively shocked that a company would sensor their reviews. I usually rely on them to narrow down my online purchases.

Why would the company pay to highlight bad reviews?! It's not like Amazon where it's not their responsibility if you don't like the book you bought from them - presumably you were giving a negative review of products they are making themselves?

Or perhaps they didn't know what 'plucking' means in this context - I know nothing about fabric terminology, so it would mean nothing to me- perhaps they thought the same.

Justcallmebebes · 15/09/2020 16:59

That's why I never rely on firms that control their own reviews. My firm does this so nothing remotely negative gets published. Makes sense from a firm's points of view but also renders reviews meaningless!

Florencex · 15/09/2020 17:02

It would be rather disingenuous of them to print bad reviews on their own website and I have never seen any company do this.

If Amazon wouldn’t post your three star review, then that would be annoying.

Sophiafour · 15/09/2020 17:07

Well, it's a bit like publishers of best-selling novels only printing the best excerpts from the reviews in the blurb, or the trailer for a film only showing you the most exciting scenes, or people only selecting their best photos from a party or celebration...

There are lots of independent places you can post like Trustpilot, even Google, who don't only print 5 star reviews, but the whole range.

gamerchick · 15/09/2020 17:10

Or perhaps they didn't know what 'plucking' means in this context

I'm not sure I know what it means tbh Grin

VintageStitchers · 15/09/2020 17:16

No idea what you mean by ‘the fabric plucks‘, but you are being extremely naive if you honestly thought that online review systems are genuine.
Some companies will go to great lengths to skew the figures even on independent review websites. If a company only has 5 star reviews I automatically get suspicious.

Did you mean the fabric puckers or frays?

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 15/09/2020 17:20

If they have a social media account (and you're that pressed about something that isn't really that important) then leave a comment on there. Otherwise breathe and move on, find something better and more enjoyable to do.

awsomer · 15/09/2020 17:27

Instead of email the review just leave it directly on their Facebook page.

KrisAkabusi · 15/09/2020 17:41

Why on earth would a company print a negative review of their own product? Of course they wouldn't put it on Facebook, it makes them look bad.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/09/2020 17:49

Also don't know what 'plucking' means Confused

RozHuntleysStump · 15/09/2020 17:51

I've been sewing for 20 years. wtf is 'plucking'?

AfterSchoolWorry · 15/09/2020 17:55

Do you mean puckered ?

LaurieFairyCake · 15/09/2020 17:56

Yeah, you mean puckering Grin

No wonder they didn't print it 😂

doublehalo · 15/09/2020 17:56

Pluck = snag, like you'd get in tights.

Is this not well known?

BigBadVoodooHat · 15/09/2020 17:59

Pluck = snag, like you'd get in tights.

Is this not well known?

Nope. Never heard it used in that context in my life Confused

@RozHuntleysStump

I've been sewing for 20 years. wtf is 'plucking'?
Same here.
Witchend · 15/09/2020 18:05

Why do you think putting a 3 star review on a company is a "moment of glory"?
It makes it sound rather as though you took great pleasure in giving them a lower score.

doublehalo · 15/09/2020 18:07

Maybe it's a niche cultural usage of the word. You can get a pluck in mostly any fabric but especially woolens.

Like me, OP is maybe not from the UK? I'd be interested to know.

Bluntness100 · 15/09/2020 18:17

I’ve no idea what fabric plucking means either, but I am unsure why you think they’d print a negative review of their product.

ClementineWoolysocks · 15/09/2020 18:27

Moment of glory? I know you said you have a lot of time on your hands but, really? You wrote a review you didn't discover life on Mars.

LadyEloise · 15/09/2020 18:55

TrustPilot printed my review of a product.
It was a true and honest review.
TrustPilot got back to me and said I had two days to contact the company.
ShockShockShock
I felt quite threatened.
I thought you were allowed give your honest opinion of a product or service.

Elsewyre · 15/09/2020 19:06

Arent masks meant to be non woven fabric?

So obviously not as tough as your other clothes.

goose1964 · 15/09/2020 19:07

I've had a review Carmen down on amazon, the company said it didn't follow the guidelines. I'd given them a 4 star rather than a 5 because he item wasn't the shape it was in the picture , but was still wearable.

Roundandballlike · 15/09/2020 19:21

I thought plucked was a common word for what's shown in the photo. Snagged maybe? I've worked in a clothes shop since I was 18 and we used that term regularly. Anyway, it seems I am naive and expected reviews to be like Amazon reviews. I have been educated at least. Re 'moment of glory' I was just being light-hearted, I doubt i'd have given it a second thought if I hadn't seen the Facebook adverts popping up.
