To think people really are CFers when it comes to second hand items?

TheIckabog · 15/09/2020 16:12

I am selling an item on a local selling page. It cost me £280 which included the main item plus some extras. The item is in ‘as new’ condition, all original box etc, in fact I think I only used it a handful of times. These items don’t come up very often as they are expensive but they are desirable.

Anyway, I’ve had lots of interest in this item and have had at least four people agree to purchase it, right down to arranging to meet up. Each one of them have then said they won’t take it unless I lower the price! Someone wanted to pay £80 and said they could get it for £200 new. When I refused to lower the price I got a load of abuse!

AIBU to think this is CF-ery to the highest degree? I’m not about to practically give it away and it’s unlikely that they would be able to get this item in such a excellent condition for any less.

I sell a lot second hand on local pages so I know about pricing items at a reasonable price to sell however I think that given it was £280 new and I’m asking £150 it’s a bit cheeky to then try and undercut by another £70!

steff13, it was cheeky because they listed it on a “local” selling site for an area they were not local to. It’s not unreasonable to assume items on a forum for a specific area will be located within that area.

RIBlue · 15/09/2020 17:43

I gave a load of stuff away for free recently on Facebook. Lesson learnt, put at least a nominal amount on it as otherwise people seem to think they’re doing you a favour!

The ‘best’ one was a bedside table. Despite stating it was free to anyone who could collect it, they proceeded to barrage me with one word messages until I agreed to deliver to make her go away. I said I would deliver the next day and she replied with her address, no thanks. Woke up the next day to a message just saying ‘time?’, I replied with a time and again, got a message back just saying ‘leave on step’. So I delivered and she watched me through a crack in the curtains but didn’t open the door. Got home to a message saying ‘got anythink else’. What she got was blocked!

Kolsch · 15/09/2020 17:44

You could have had mine for a tenner @Africa2go it honestly is in pristine condition.
I don't understand why people behave as they do. Surely they aren't so stupid to think that the buyer won't notice it's condition?

slipperywhensparticus · 15/09/2020 17:44

I was selling something for £30 expecting a it less but within minutes I had ten people in my inbox offering full price collect ASAP so I knew I had underpriced it apart from one guy who demanded my address said he would pay me 10 and if they didn't work he wanted a refund plus fuel because he was coming from out if the area I said no he was shocked why did I not want to pay him! The outrage that he poured at me was intense I told him i had sold them he demanded my address to collect it I had to block him he was quite deranged

RealBecca · 15/09/2020 17:47

Recently listed a mint condition item which cost over £350 new for £50. At least 5 people asking me to take £25 or messaging to ask what the lowest I would take was. I had even put on the advert no offers!!

Legoandloldolls · 15/09/2020 17:51

Lol! Sadly I can concur. I have given times away to people who bark one word messages at me as above.

I was selling some nappies in FB for less than half price, about 1/3 and a big box of them. Only for £10. People said yes then wanted delivery ten miles away. Then I reduced them to £5 and someone said yes, then asked me what they was! I gave them to the food bank.

I just sell on Ebay now. Keep the crazy at postal distance 😂

cjpark · 15/09/2020 17:52

You're so right. I recently listed a ride on wooden ladybird on local pages. Cost me £65 new. Used but very good condition. Asked £20 for it. Seller agreed, turned up with £10 as 'that's all she had'!
I refused to sell it to her.

bpirockin · 15/09/2020 17:53

If I'm buying a second hand higher value item, such as the carpet cleaner I'm looking for at the moment, I look at paying half the (current) shop price at the most.

My thinking is that it almost certainly has no guarantee left, and whilst I may not find the same model new at half price, I might find a slightly lesser one that does the job I need it to, and have a two year guarantee if anything does go wrong. You know if your ad is honest and the item works perfectly, only has minimal use/wear and tear, etc, but I'm the one taking a gamble on you and said item, which for all I know might break on first use.

If it's priced at a level I'm not willing or able to pay I'd never ask a seller to accept less, but if they gave a price and said ONO, I'd obviously make a slightly lower offer in the hope that we'd both be happy.

The ads I really detest are those that ask for OFFERS - people have a target price in mind, so why not just say it and be done? I scroll straight past, I mean what do you do, offer £5 and work your way up? Daft.

Dillydallyingthrough · 15/09/2020 17:54

I've sold stuff and I find the first few people who contact you within the first 30 mins or so are CF's. I've had the stupid offers (on for £100, £15 offered), you need to reduce as I'm travelling (I couldn't care less), can you deliver (clearly state I cant) or knock some money off for it.

I now put in ads 'no offers, if you make an offer your message will be ignored/blocked' and I do. Like a PP I've also had someone ring me to say they are coming to collect something for half the price! Erm nope I didn't sell it to you and I'm not giving you my address.

Millie2013 · 15/09/2020 17:56

I always say “£X, no offers” in the post. That tends to deal with the CFers, but obv doesn’t always work, as illustrated above ^^
I also state, “if you wish to purchase, please respond below”, which cuts down on the countless messenger messages

IlCommissarioMontalbano · 15/09/2020 17:58

Can't stand the ads that say 'sensible offers only', what I think is sensible for the tat you are selling I'm sure you wouldn't agree!
Grrrrrrrrr just put the price on that you want.

Hiddennameforever · 15/09/2020 18:00

I had few of these too. I sell items long term and the excuses I get!
I had a bloke to pick up a musical book For £5.
He arrived and said I have no money, can you give it to me gratis? I can see you have a fancy car so you can afford to miss a fiver!!!
Seriously?

Than I had someone to pick up a brand new toy, it was £4.
They came in a car, a young girl run out to me, handed me the money in small change like 10 /5 pences and said it’s all in there. Run into car and the drove off fast. Of course the only paid me £2!

And another..
We were selling our flat. I viever came to view, he said he wants Buy It Now and There and then.
He said he has 200k on him in cash and he wants to move in today!
We told him to leave, he sat down in a kitchen and wouldn’t not move!
We were to about to call police!
Luckily he left after 3 hrs, only apparently to check how far it is from bus stop to walk.
Shocking!!!!

Dillydallyingthrough · 15/09/2020 18:03

I also dont understand the pp post about a cheeky seller, they offered to deliver for £10 even if it was out of the area. And someone who lives in London I drive 10-15 miles often i get that it can seem like a distance but a lot of people don't mind....

tectonicplates · 15/09/2020 18:04

Hiddennameforever

WTF with your house sale? That's absolutely terrifying!

Avery7 · 15/09/2020 18:09

Some people just don't think it through.

I recently sold a chest of drawers. Woman said she wanted it, turned up and immediately started saying that it was too big and wouldn't fit in her car, even though I'd put the dimensions of it on the listing.

Then eventually she decided she would take it but said that I'd need to carry it as she was pregnant. I just laughed at her and pointed at my own bump!

Piffle11 · 15/09/2020 18:10

@Chicchicchicchiclana they probably thought that if you’d bothered to get a van and drive across London, then you’d probably take it, even if the condition wasn’t as good as described. And if you paid them for delivery ... they’re £10 up and know they know where you live (if you tell them to take their junk back with them).

wigglerose · 15/09/2020 18:10

I've always wondered if some responses are fake to make sites like Gumtree look like they are more active than they really are.

I once tried to sell a 125lite fish tank, cabinet it sits on and all the gubbins. Not exactly the thing loads of people are looking for. The fish tank and cabinet alone was worth something like £360 and was selling it for £100.

I had three or four people get in touch, want it for £50 and then when I said no, the price was £100 since you get the cabinet and bits and bobs worth £50+ new, promptly tell me they got one elsewhere for cheaper.

I was like WTF, who is this person selling multiple 125 litre fish tanks for under £50?

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 15/09/2020 18:13

So I had a weeks worth of complete uniform plus some Clarke's shoes that were almost brand new. (I bought them in March and then lock down...)

None of it fit and I didn't want it so I put it on our schools Facebook page as free.

The person came to get it but didn't say thank you.

And I can't say "Errr excuse me you are getting £40 shoes for FREE - you need to say thank you" - because that would make me look like an arse.

But seriously, I though that was rude.

Hiddenname Shock

I've had pretty good luck giving stuff away for free on a local page. Except for one guy who kept trying hoover up everything I was giving away so no one else could get a look in, clear was going to flog it after. And I have dropped stuff off to someone who was going to collect but was having a really hard time (I noticed they made a post about it after they said they couldn't collect anymore) and what they were supposed to be collecting was a treat for themselves so I took it round.

honeygirlz · 15/09/2020 18:27

YANBU, although I would only list items that are new as 'as new'. You have used it twice so it's not 'as new'.

smittenkittennn · 15/09/2020 18:32

I'm guessing it's a Kitchenaid stand mixer with some accessories.

Also CF = cunt fucker for me!

honeygirlz · 15/09/2020 18:42

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Yanbu. The cheeky fuckery I see on my local selling forums is astounding, but not always from buyers.

Someone joined our local neighbourhood forum to sell an item for about £50. I think it was a piece of furniture iirc. But they live about 10 miles away (we are in London, so that's a long way). They declared it collection only or could deliver for £10 petrol money. Definitely cheeky. They went a bit quiet when someone asked in the comments why they were advertising miles from home if they weren't prepared to deliver.

How was the seller being a CF when you and your neighbourhood expected them to deliver for free? Confused
honeygirlz · 15/09/2020 18:44

@Alwaysinpain

I was selling a car once. Can't remember the exact amount but I received a message saying "Hi (hate that!) I'm coming to collect this now for £300(!!!) ok on my way" When I swiftly told him that absolutely was not happening and that I had also just sold the vehicle 5 mins prior, I got "Oh come on (😡) you want rid of the vehicle and I'm prepared to take it. I'll be there in 2 hours" (even though I had not given him my address!!!) He was repeatedly told it was now gone. No longer in my possession and likely half way down the A1 by now, yet he kept on & on telling me it was his vehicle, to get the log boom ready and that he'd already put temp insurance on it etc etc 😳
Sounds like was a troll. I would have just let him drive around.
MissConductUS · 15/09/2020 18:47

Sounds like was a troll. I would have just let him drive around.

Or given him the address of the local police station or mortuary. Grin

MilkOfThePuppy · 15/09/2020 18:51

Yes, it's very cheeky. You've offered an item for sale at a certain price. If they don't want to pay that (or very near to it), they should just move on to the next listing.

Some people take "don't ask, don't get" to an obscene level. They're bad enough, but the scammers who try the sick child sob stories are infuriating. I hope karma comes along to take a good hard bite out of those disgusting specimens.
