To think people really are CFers when it comes to second hand items?

I am selling an item on a local selling page. It cost me £280 which included the main item plus some extras. The item is in ‘as new’ condition, all original box etc, in fact I think I only used it a handful of times. These items don’t come up very often as they are expensive but they are desirable.

Anyway, I’ve had lots of interest in this item and have had at least four people agree to purchase it, right down to arranging to meet up. Each one of them have then said they won’t take it unless I lower the price! Someone wanted to pay £80 and said they could get it for £200 new. When I refused to lower the price I got a load of abuse!

AIBU to think this is CF-ery to the highest degree? I’m not about to practically give it away and it’s unlikely that they would be able to get this item in such a excellent condition for any less.

I sell a lot second hand on local pages so I know about pricing items at a reasonable price to sell however I think that given it was £280 new and I’m asking £150 it’s a bit cheeky to then try and undercut by another £70!

It depends. I don't think offering a lower price is very cheeky but it depends on how much lower. Abuse is of course not on.

Justaboy · 15/09/2020 17:03

Welcome to the great british public!!

Glad i don't have to mix with them anymore thanks:)

VividImagination · 15/09/2020 17:03

It’s the “no shows” I really can’t be doing with. It. Does. My. Head. In. I’ve been selling a lot of stuff recently and the no shows and hagglers make up more than half my clientele!

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 15/09/2020 17:07

@Crockof

In my head CF is cunty fucker.
Me too 😂
msflibble · 15/09/2020 17:10

worst are the ones who turn up to your house to buy the item and then theatrically hmm and haw whilst cocking their heads and scratching their chins. Why bother to waste both of our time if you never intended to pay the agreed price? Idiots

ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore · 15/09/2020 17:11

It is CFery, and I quickly block such people.

Pet8 · 15/09/2020 17:12

I listed flat pack bedroom furniture, still new in boxes, for free. I couldn't get anyone to put them up. The one attempt I made with a bedside cabinet (the smallest item) was a complete farce. It fell to pieces after a few weeks. I was just sick of the boxes taking up space for so long ( 5 yearsConfused) and wanted them gone. I had to write off the £500 as a lesson learned. I just couldn't be bothered with the hassle of people bargaining me down and, though I'm skint myself, thought I'd do a good turn.
I had cf after cf wanting me to deliver them. Yet, the best was the cf who wanted me to put them up for her too.

FlamedToACrisp · 15/09/2020 17:13

The trouble with insultingly-low offers is they are basically saying either "I think you are dishonest, trying to get much more than this item is worth," or "I think you are stupid, so I expect you to accept much less than this item is worth."

Kolsch · 15/09/2020 17:19

It's the ones who put out a wanted ad and then mess about who get me going.
A few months ago a woman posted that she wanted a black office chair, leather if possible. I responded that I had one that I no longer had use for. Black leather, like new and she could have it for a tenner.
Then I got oh my husband is away, can you deliver? No!
I'm new to the area, I don't know anywhere, what bus do I need?
I swiftly blocked her and put the chair back in its wrappers in the garage.

TheBeesKnee · 15/09/2020 17:20

Pet8

Bit late for you now but I always re-enforce flat pack furniture with glue and additional screws.

MissConductUS · 15/09/2020 17:22

This is so common there's a forum on reddit for it:

www.reddit.com/r/ChoosingBeggars/

There are some real CF'er stories on there!

Plussizejumpsuit · 15/09/2020 17:22

Selling stuff second hand is a fucking nightmare. I'm doing a declutter at the moment and will probably sell nothing of the stuff I get rid of as it's just not worth the hassle.

dollypartonscoat · 15/09/2020 17:22

What's £280 new but desirable and rare? 🤔

BlueDream · 15/09/2020 17:23

Go check out Choosing Beggars on reddit.

The sob stories are great, like "my son is dying of cancer and has 3 weeks to live, so you need to give me the Xbox for free", or "it's my kids birthday tomorrow and we've just been burgled of his birthday presents, you must give me this Nintendo switch for free and also deliver".

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 15/09/2020 17:24

Someone was selling a pushchair worth over a grand the other day (( bugaboo double with all attachments ))

They wanted £40 for it, it had been used for 1 child and so they put in the blurb (( will need a wash as it's been stored in the garage ))

And still someone complained and accused them of selling dirty items ! The same one is still for sale for silly money 😳 The bloke ended up donating it to a local, domestic violence charity in the end who were very grateful.

OhCaptain · 15/09/2020 17:24

If a lot of people are offering considerably less it would make me wonder if the item is massively overpriced.

But CFery is just part of the selling game! I tried it once and it wasn't worth the hassle, tbh.

You can’t start a thread like this without telling us what it is!

Kitchen blender?
Guitar?
Vacuum cleaner?

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Yanbu. The cheeky fuckery I see on my local selling forums is astounding, but not always from buyers.

Someone joined our local neighbourhood forum to sell an item for about £50. I think it was a piece of furniture iirc. But they live about 10 miles away (we are in London, so that's a long way). They declared it collection only or could deliver for £10 petrol money. Definitely cheeky. They went a bit quiet when someone asked in the comments why they were advertising miles from home if they weren't prepared to deliver.

Why was this cheeky? They were prepared to deliver for an extra 10. A piece of furniture would also likely have to be loaded onto a truck by the seller, then unloaded at the desination. 10 is really not to much for the mileage + time + the effort involved.
Totickleamockingbird · 15/09/2020 17:28

Sometimes, sellers are CF too. I often see ‘as new’ stuff on eBay that has obvious signs of wear and tear. Of course the seller will say they have only used it a couple of time. Hmm

No doubt the reverse is also true Hmm

Update your ad with

Genuine enquires only please, NO offers and NO time wasters”

tectonicplates · 15/09/2020 17:34

@DowntonCrabby

Update your ad with

Does it actually make a difference if you write that? Does it work?
JohnnyJohnnyYesMama · 15/09/2020 17:37

What's the item you are trying to sell?

Africa2go · 15/09/2020 17:38

This. Needed an office chair in lockdown. Listed as "pristine", general description was "as new" condition, rarely used etc etc. It was quite an expensive chair, listed for about 60% of value. Messaged seller, yes, almost brand new etc etc. Drove 30 mins to collect it, seller opened the door, cat squeezed past my legs, was obvious from about 6ft away that all of one side of the chair had been scratched within an inch of its life by said cat. Just a complete waste of time. Politely said, ahh, so not really "as new" condition, to which the seller seemed gobsmacked!

Sgtmajormummy · 15/09/2020 17:39

It took me three months to sell a chest freezer for what I thought was a ridiculously low price.
Too many people that didn’t think it through.
No transport or car too small.
Asking for a discount because they were traveling from a long distance (no dear, your travel costs do not reduce the value of my freezer!)
Or people who obviously wanted the lowest price so they could sell it on.
But, in the end someone reasonable turned up and it was all over in 15 minutes.

So I suppose you just have to bide your time and wait for the right match to turn up. “Needs gone by Friday” is like a call to battle for the CFs.

As a buyer I’ve had some great deals: lots of furniture, pottery, an air conditioning unit, and most recently an 8-light Murano chandelier for less than €200! Admittedly I had to take the risk of breaking it through my own fault and pay my electrician friend in kind with a couple of very nice bottles of wine!

I always pay the asking price and take stuff away ASAP.
