To ask the woman next door to keep it down a bit?

Woman next door is always out in her garden doing training exercises with her dog. She films herself doing this (mutual neighbour told me this bit, we don’t know why she’s filming it). Anyway, last week she was out there screaming “FIND MONKEY!!!l” whilst running around the garden manically, dog furiously running around trying to find the bleeding monkey whilst she’s getting more and more animated and “loud” by the minute.

Yesterday she started shouting “BANG!” - peering out of the bedroom window it appears that she’s trying to teach the dog to play dead. This went on throughout the day. I was out there this morning and she had progressed to “BANG!” and “COME ALIVE!”.

Now it’s absolutely ridiculous, she’s running at the dog making LOUD machine gun noises, the dog flops down “dead” and then she screams “OH MY GOD!! WHAT HAVE I DONE?? Please .... COME ALIVE!!”. Dog springs to life and she casually goes to turn off what I now know to be a video recorder.

It’s the intensity of it that’s getting me, it’s absolutely crazy the way she goes off. I was on the phone earlier in my living room and my mum could hear the bloody screaming that’s how bad it is. I want to ask her to keep it down a bit as some of it is quite distressing to anyone not knowing it’s dog training. But WIBU to do so?? I’ve spoken to her briefly before but I don’t know her well.

I have this image of a comedy show with op as the heroine trying out all these things in desperation

ChikiTIKI · 13/09/2020 21:33

The quickest way to get her to stop being so loud is to call out to her while she is still filming, asking her to keep it down. If you're interrupting the videos she will hopefully start filming elsewhere or train inside then do toned down filming outside.

Update, I feel so guilty 😩 I heard her out there this morning and looked out of the window, she appeared to be doing a dance routine with the dog to Whitney Houston. I took the opportunity to go out and peer over the fence. She saw me, turned the music off and came over. I said “hi, just making sure you’re ok as I heard you out here last night and you sounded so upset!” (I had rehearsed this in my head). She said “yeah I’m fine thank you, it’s just dog training, we’re doing tricks and stuff”. I asked “oh are you entering a competition?” .... turns out she’s suffering from depression and this is the only thing she still enjoys doing. I felt awful. I ended up watching a load of her routines and am now following her on Facebook 🤦‍♀️

Heh, snared. Grin

It is a shame it has to be so loud though.

StarchyStanley · 14/09/2020 12:00

Aw no! I feel guilty now too op!

Dogs are supposed to be really good for your MH, so that makes sense. Maybe it won't sound so annoying now that you know what the reason is. Glad you asked her as well, as now I'll think twice if I ever hear similar and feel like saying "shut up"!

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 14/09/2020 12:16

Speaking as someone who trains dogs and other animals (play dead is an easy teach to a smart dog!), I'd start making comments about how impressive it is that trainers can teach their dogs to respond to such subtle / quiet / almost inaudible cues. Maybe she'll get the idea that squealing at her dog incessantly is actually less impressive than an effective quiet cue.

But, volume control issues aside, it's a harmless enough occupation and if it keeps her going, I'm all for it.

Funnily enough she showed me her trick list that she has to work through for dons certificate she’s going for. One of them is to teach the dog 3 command and have them perform it with hand signals only. No sounds at all. I made a point of saying I can’t wait to see her do that one so she’s going to start working on it this afternoon 😂 she’s currently out there now sunbathing with the dog sprawled across her, the dog is bigger than she is 😂 I actually quite like her. Must think before I judge in future

This time next week, OP, you will have guilted yourself into being her friend and will be round at hers every evening, with your new dog, performing a duo routine!

Nottherealslimshady · 14/09/2020 12:45

Aw it must he tough with the noise but she sounds like it makes her happy. Playing with dogs is so good for your mental health. Hopefully she masters the hand signals soon.

wheresmymojo · 14/09/2020 13:17

@Elieza

Shite sandwich routine.

I’d (smile and be all happy) ask her if she is training her dog for a competition, remark how cool that is. I hope you win. That’s awsum ...

And then mention I’m working from home and it’s really loud and people can hear it when I’m on the phone/Skype work calls and any chance she could keep that in mind while she’s training him. Thanks so much.

Then nice stuff again. Do you think you might be on TV how cool is that. The dogs really clever. You’ve trained him really well. Good luck. Keep me posted (smiles again, all happy).

(Prepare the line : No I’m not in social media sorry, I don’t have time I’m so busy with work..just in case she’s wanting to send you something or get you involved)

Grin

This is the best approach...(not necessarily the funniest but definitely the best!)

wheresmymojo · 14/09/2020 13:17

@BewilderedDoughnut

This is what it’s like for people who have to live next to children. Only a million times worse!

Also agree with this!

wheresmymojo · 14/09/2020 13:20

I'm fully expecting a thread on here about me at some point.

TBF I don't shout but I do have full on conversations with my cats on a regular basis.

'And now I'm following her on Facebook 'Grin
Looking forward to
'And now I'm the assistant' lol

Also YAWN at people shoehorning in the chance to slag kids off for making noise.

Notapheasantplucker · 14/09/2020 15:12

Best update ever OP Grin

There is so much of this attention seeking behaviour about and it does my head in. I would shout at her to shut up and you are working. No one is interested in any one else's nonsense or life

Elderflower14 · 15/09/2020 19:58

Just seen this on FB!! 🤣 🤣 🤣

To ask the woman next door to keep it down a bit?
