To report neighbour’s having a party?

WilsonMilson · 13/09/2020 15:57

I’m currently waiting for Covid test results for my child who is off school with what I hope is a bad cold, but also had a high fever for 2 days so required testing. We are obviously isolating because of that.

Meanwhile, a neighbour along the street is currently having a party this afternoon. A bouncy castle has been put up and there are around 10 cars sitting outside, so goodness knows how many people are there, must be at least 20.

Current restrictions here limit to 6 people. And yet my neighbour clearly couldn’t give a fuck, and as a result we may all suffer by spreading and continuing this endless misery.

I don’t want to be a killjoy, but I feel like reporting it, and yet I don’t want to be ‘that’ person, it’s bad enough we can’t live a normal life at the moment without adding more grief. What would you do?

YABU - don’t report, we are becoming a police state, live and let live etc etc
YANBU - neighbour is a dick, report away.

I think that the rogue apostrophe could work. 'having a party' could be a noun group. So if only one neighbour apostrophe could work as possessive. As in 'I resented their having a party'.

cyclingmad · 13/09/2020 19:14

Hilarious how ppl say mind your own business they will get infected...are you that stupid. So these people go home pass it on to their family and so on and one day your out at the shops and its passed on to you...all from the party except you won't realise that

WilsonMilson · 13/09/2020 19:36

I love that this thread has also become a grammar debate.

Normally. I'm against reporting etc but tonight I'm in a bad mood so yes, go for it.

@Kevinn
@LaMarschallin
I just assumed the apostrophe denoted use of the possessive pronoun before the gerund:

@Dontfuckingsaycheese, you got there before me.

We're at the point now where if people are still breaking the rules then the police need to be informed. They've been repeatedly told and warned and still won't listen.

However, because of the idiocy of waiting till Monday to bring the latest measures in, people have took advantage and took the piss as they have done throughout. Give people an inch and they'll take a mile.

Hopefully from tomorrow some of these scoundrels will start to behave.

JacobReesMogadishu · 13/09/2020 20:01

Guidance currently 6 but the law is 30 so don’t think police can do anything.

No, 'we' are not and the police have more pressing matters to tend to than pander to curtain twitching wannabe Stasi. People are social animals. This is not going to change because of a virus that kills only 0.001% of people who contract it.
Notthemessiah · 13/09/2020 20:10

I would probably give them a one-time pass (and silently think less of them) but then report if it happened again, but it would all mostly depend on whether I liked them or not to be honest.

And they'll be the same ones who want schools to stay shut and then claim that they/their children have caught covid at school, when they actually caught it at a party or it was only going round school because of other peoples' parties spread it.
Dontfuckingsaycheese · 13/09/2020 20:36

@ravensoaponarope - but your link worded it so much more eloquently than I did in my post Smile

LagunaBubbles · 13/09/2020 20:38

Mind your own bloody business

Public health is everyones business.

Biancadelrioisback · 13/09/2020 20:46

Hmm, I'm very live and let live.
I'm planning on breaking the rules next week tbf. A very close relative has just died and it's their funeral (all non-covid related) and since we can't do anything other than a tiny, quick funeral, I'm planning on sitting in my mam's back garden afterwards to offer her some support and comfort with my family. There will be 7 of us. If we get reported I'd be prepared to pay the fine.

I'm very sad for your loss, which is even more difficult having to restrict the number of people able to celebrate your relative's life.

If you're 7 people, and given your circumstances, if you get a knock on your door from a friendly policeman, and you explain the context to them, I cannot imagine they would do anything other than offer you their condolences. They are human too. It's the blatant piss takers who openly flout the regs and think the rules are there to break that they are trying to deal with.

Biancadelrioisback · 13/09/2020 21:04

Thank you. And that's very true. I'd hope they'd be understanding but you never know! My parents neighbour is an absolute dick so wouldn't be surprised if he reported us. I said if that happens I'll just hide in the blanket chest.

Mum2jenny · 13/09/2020 21:05

I’d just ignore it, no way would I snitch on a neighbor having a party for a kid. Just no irrespective of the numbers.

movingonup20 · 13/09/2020 21:06

@Biancadelrioisback

Our local police have made it clear they are not planning on patrolling the streets looking for gatherings of 7, and they have told the public not to be reporting minor infringements because they will not be rushing to enforce however they are inviting us to report major breaches. 7 people after a funeral is very different to 28 drunk teenagers

LEELULUMPKIN · 13/09/2020 21:06

There isn't going to be a shortage of applications for "Covid Officers" is there?

I'm as fed up as anyone and have stuck to the rules but this snitching society that we are becoming is scary.

The truth is that we cannot police everyone, just do what you can to protect yourself and not be as you say "that person".

HunkyPunk · 13/09/2020 21:17

Don't worry, op I've seen worse placed apostrophes. And it's not as though it's not technically correct, even if it might not have been what you meant to say Smile

LindyLou2020 · 13/09/2020 21:56

If the number of people/children exceeds the permitted amount where you live, then report it. They don't need to know it was you, surely?
I'm sick to death of selfish people breaking the albeit bizarre rules when so many others are suffering.
And I'm sending you lots of apostrophes to use in whatever way you wish! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, xxx

Just proves how crap MY grammar is - I've sent commas instead of apostrophes 😒
bumblingbovine49 · 14/09/2020 07:54

@Timeforabiscuit

Depends,

If it was a neighbour who was routinely a pain to live with, I'd report. If it was a nice one who watered plants, I wouldn't.

This is why I am not suited to law enforcement, among many other things!

Me tooGrin
Florencex · 14/09/2020 08:04

@Iammariedtojacksparrow

I am just here to see how many people didn't read the OP and telling you the rules don't come in till tomorrow.
It doesn’t matters what the OP says, it was not correct just because it is in the OP. The rule of six only starts today. Local restrictions do not have any mention of “six”.
jojobar · 14/09/2020 08:08

I can beat this, there was a street party local to us this weekend. Quite a lot more than 30 people.

I didn't report, because nothing would be done anyway.

WilsonMilson · 14/09/2020 08:14

@Florencex you are wrong. I’m in Northern Ireland and this is the current guidance here, and has been since 24th August. There are also some local further restrictions that have came into place last week.

To report neighbour’s having a party?
