To report neighbour’s having a party?

WilsonMilson · 13/09/2020 15:57

I’m currently waiting for Covid test results for my child who is off school with what I hope is a bad cold, but also had a high fever for 2 days so required testing. We are obviously isolating because of that.

Meanwhile, a neighbour along the street is currently having a party this afternoon. A bouncy castle has been put up and there are around 10 cars sitting outside, so goodness knows how many people are there, must be at least 20.

Current restrictions here limit to 6 people. And yet my neighbour clearly couldn’t give a fuck, and as a result we may all suffer by spreading and continuing this endless misery.

I don’t want to be a killjoy, but I feel like reporting it, and yet I don’t want to be ‘that’ person, it’s bad enough we can’t live a normal life at the moment without adding more grief. What would you do?

YABU - don’t report, we are becoming a police state, live and let live etc etc
YANBU - neighbour is a dick, report away.

OP. You could always donate your spare apostrophe to DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult.

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/09/2020 16:33

I would report your post, to change your apostrophe lol

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/09/2020 16:35

@ameliajoan

YANBU. I would not hesitate to report.

If they’re going to take the risk on this sort of thing then they have to face the consequences if they’re caught.

This ^

How many will be back in work and school tomorrow and could be passing the virus onto others who didn’t go partying?

Brokendownshire · 13/09/2020 16:35

The rogue apostrophe could be bloody IOS autocorrect. Does it all the time to me and it makes me second guess myself!

Sorry I have nothing helpful to say about the party

LondonStone · 13/09/2020 16:36

Tough call OP. I agree with other people, I would try not to let it bother me but it’s incredibly frustrating to see people blatantly ignoring the rules.

Our neighbours flaunted lockdown restrictions throughout, they hosted multiple garden parties, some of them with about 12-15 adults. They’re due back from Portugal any day now and absolutely 100% will not isolate.

I didn’t (and wouldn’t) report because I like an easy life but I wish I could be one of those people who don’t give a shit because they’re clearly having much more fun than all of us.

There are several areas across England with local restrictions.

www.gov.uk/government/collections/local-restrictions-areas-with-an-outbreak-of-coronavirus-covid-19

This means that:

If you live in one of the affected areas, in order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus you must not:

host people you do not live with in your home or garden, unless they’re in your support bubble
meet people you do not live with in their home or garden, whether inside or outside of the affected areas unless they’re in your support bubble.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 13/09/2020 16:40

Stop it. Just stop it.

All these people who are appointing themselves neighbourhood prefects and reporting their neighbours' comings and goings to the 'authorities' would do well to consider how that's turned out in the past. And then think on how history has a nasty habit of repeating itself.

This pandemic won't be around forever. But the shifts in the way people conduct themselves socially might take a lot longer to dissipate, if at all.

Would you like to live in the type of society where people are tapping away on their keyboards to the local police and/or 'marshals' (whoopee, we have those now too, no doubt sporting that ubiquitous symbol of authority the High Vis Jacket) because a neighbour, friend or family member is doing something Nanny State thinks they shouldn't? Perhaps even within the four walls and privacy of their own homes?

I'm dead certain I wouldn't.

Inextremis · 13/09/2020 16:45

We're currently limited to no more than 6 people from 3 different households, in Ireland.

From the government website:

Social visits to homes, both indoors and outdoors, should be limited to a maximum of 6 visitors from no more than 3 households
Other indoor gatherings and events are now limited to 6 people from no more than 3 households
Outdoor gatherings and events are limited to 15 people
Sporting events and matches can take place behind closed doors
Restaurants and pubs that serve food have to close by 11.30pm and can have a maximum of 6 people at a table.

So the OP could be in Ireland :)

MagicSummer · 13/09/2020 16:46

I really cannot understand this almost unanimous idea that children under 12 should not be counted as one of 'the 6'. Children are the ones who cough without covering their mouths, sneeze without a tissue and are generally far more unhygienic than adults. Do people think they have magical properties and cannot possibly spread the virus to parents and grandparents??

emmathedilemma · 13/09/2020 16:48

Scotland is currently limited to 6 people from 2 households. Children under 12 don’t count towards the total number but should also not be from more than 2 households.
I’m a bit on the side of “you can’t cure stupid” when it comes to things like this but I’m also loosing my patience with making endless sacrifices and being still acting like selfish dicks which means those playing by the rules are being penalised for longer. I don’t even know how you’d report them.....maybe go round and pull the plug on the bouncy castle?!?

cyclingmad · 13/09/2020 16:50

@MarieIVanArkleStinks well if you don't break the rules there is nothing to be afraid of really.

Unfortunately people having large parties end up contributing to increasing cases which then impacts us all.

ksa103 · 13/09/2020 16:59

Totally report it if you're in an area where they are breaking the law.

ErinBrockovich · 13/09/2020 16:59

I would report. YANBU.

orangejuicer · 13/09/2020 17:00

There are local lockdowns in Wales too so no point questioning the 6 people rule if we don't know the area/country OP is in (not that I'm asking obvs!)

Lilybet1980 · 13/09/2020 17:01

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

There are some things I would report, but a kids birthday party isn't one of them.
If there are 10 cars parked outside it’s hardly a drop and run kids party. That’s at least 10 adult guests.
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 13/09/2020 17:03

cyclingmad that's a very naive view. Who makes the rules and what are they based on really?

Just think how easy it would be for the rule-makers to change them to neatly sweep up activities that you believe and perceive to be acceptable?

This new 'snitching society' is gathering a head of steam and that is lots to be afraid of. Really.

blanchmange50 · 13/09/2020 17:09

The pandemic will be around for a long time if arseholes keep thinking the rules dont apply to them. Those of you criticising the OP,..have you seen the news, the R rate is rising again hence more restrictions. I for one dont want the schools closing again or having even stricter lock downs. The assholes having the large party in there home/garden are already breaking current restrictions never mind the ones coming in tomorrow....

Bluntness100 · 13/09/2020 17:11

Op where are you?

CharlieBoo · 13/09/2020 17:12

Pathetic ...

RepeatSwan · 13/09/2020 17:21

This is just horrid.

Who wants to report neighbours? Who wants cases to keep rising?

What a sorry mess.

mumwon · 13/09/2020 17:26

& there is an enormous backlog of tests which probably are likely to get thrown out because they are no longer valid. Which means the numbers we have had - over 3000 for several days -could be higher
& that IS scary
So if I were in ops shoes, with possibly infected dc - I might be angry enough to think about it - chances are op someone may well report them (especially if they are a mn whose drive has been blocked!)

ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore · 13/09/2020 17:27

New rules come in tomorrow in most of England; 30 is allowed in those areas.

If you're in one of the more restricted areas, please report it. It's why we have to keep tightening up the restrictions. Sucks for everyone else.

Hotcuppatea · 13/09/2020 17:28

Mind your own bloody business.

Spindlicious · 13/09/2020 17:30

Report it. Im sick to death of this dragging on because people think the rules don’t apply to them. A party here just got caught by police and organiser got 10k fine.
