Have you given up all hope of a holiday this year? Anyone hoping to go away in the October half term? Just interested on peoples thoughts

Easter holiday cancelled. Got refund eventually.

Booked Portugal for Octber half term when it went on the green list but kicked it down the road to Feb half term when it became obvious there was going to be a u-turn after just a couple of weeks.

Hoping for a last minute October deal if fingers get pulled out of arses on aiport testing/shortening of quarantine but not holding my breath. Poised to pounce on a UK short break deal closer to the time if necessary and have had a couple of these already.

We were very lucky and had 3 holidays in July/August. We are cancelling the one we had booked for October.

user1487194234 · 13/09/2020 21:24

Having had to cancel 3 overseas holidays this year we are sticking to the UK for our final 2 holidays if 2020

WoolySock · 13/09/2020 21:25

We moved our Easter holiday to October half term before it was officially cancelled, paid a £500:change fee to Ryan Air. Reluctant to do that again so not sure what will happen now although we would like to get away. If we do get a chance to reschedule, not sure when would be safe to reschedule for as reading this thread Easter doesn't sound positive. We have annual travel insurance purchased in January so not sure we'd still be covered as we rescheduled.

@cliffdiver interesting to hear your October holiday had already been cancelled, wondering if that was abroad? Thanks

LEELULUMPKIN · 13/09/2020 21:26

We are going to Antigua on Wednesday.

WoolySock · 13/09/2020 21:29

@cliffdiver sorry I see it was to Cape Verde. So disappointing but at least you know. Did you get a refund or did you reschedule? Thanks

Xuli · 13/09/2020 21:30

UK self catering booked for Oct half term too in the Peaks. I'm hopeful it will go ahead, but we're happy with walks and just being away if not many places are open. It's with a good company who in spring held our money for another booking, so not the end of the world if it's cancelled.

MaryShelley1818 · 13/09/2020 21:37

I've given up!
We lost holidays to Barcelona, Holland and Portugal this year. We managed a night in Edinburgh, night in Yorkshire and have 2nts in the Lakes booked in a couple of weeks time. Lovely but not the same!

We're due to go to CenterParcs in December for a week for DS's third Birthday but 50/50 whether we'll go ahead atm. Without the Christmas celebrations and use of the pool daily it may not be worth it, plus I'll be 7mths pregnant and high risk.

captisbirdie · 13/09/2020 21:38

Dubai in November is pretty punchy. If they don't like the look of you at the airport symptoms wise they'll take you off to government quarantine Confused I might leave it a bit...

Dotinthecity · 13/09/2020 21:56

I had two UK breaks in the summer and have a long weekend booked for 3 weeks time. Not worried that it will be cancelled at all. If you want a holiday, book one.

Lovely1a2b3c · 13/09/2020 21:56

We went to Cornwall for the last week of August/start of September and had a nice time, although it was a bit too crowded for some of the time.

We are supposed to be going to Scotland this Autumn but I imagine we'll be cancelling it!

balzamico · 13/09/2020 22:03

We have half term in October booked in Turkey. Have everything crossed but fed up of looking, checking , wondering

sansou · 13/09/2020 22:05

We had a long weekend glamping in July and then found that everywhere nice was booked up for the rest of the summer so managed to book UK HT on the nearest bit of coastline to us which is a mere 1.5 hrs away. Doesn't matter if the weather is rubbish, just need a change of scenery. Not booking for 2021 yet and if we do, we'll most likely stick to the UK. Keeping an eye out on the availability of a few places although at £3K per week next July, it's twice more than we usually spend on a European holiday rental. I've had a pay cut recently and have survived an initial round of redundancies so I'm reluctant to commit to an expensive UK holiday next year.

frillseeking · 13/09/2020 22:19

What's government quarantine captisbirdie?! doesn't sound very pleasant somewhere like Dubai...

@cafesandbookshops

I wanted to go to Christmas markets in Germany but not sure what to do. I’m keeping an eye on the news for Germany to see how the situation is there and will probably decide in October.
Several of the Cologne Christmas Markets have already been cancelled. Its on their tourism page

We chose to cancel, but we could have had a credit note with an additional £500 rebooking incentive.

Our rational for cancelling was if the holiday company (TUI) go bust, a credit note wouldn't be of much use.

WoolySock · 14/09/2020 08:30

@cliffdiver Hi thanks for getting back, that makes sense and sounds sensible, it's good TUI gave you an option. I'm not sure we'll be so lucky :(

EmmaStone · 14/09/2020 08:57

School trips cancelled, Easter holiday cancelled. Weekends away with friends cancelled. We did manage a (shortened) holiday to France in August, which was absolutely bliss, quarantined on our return.

During lockdown, I booked quite a few flights, so Croatia booked for October half term, looking unlikely. This morning looked at alternatives, but we'll make the decision nearer our dates. Spain booked for Feb half term, again will wait and see. Greece booked for Easter...Trying to pin down next summer, we normally holiday with friends, but some are reluctant to risk booking and have no insurance cover.

frillseeking · 14/09/2020 09:39

emmastone I would be concerned to book for next year in case the holiday company or flight provider goes bust. Surely they won't be able to survive months and months without any bookings?

No plans to holiday thia year or next year, until this situation is under control, its not worth the stress.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 14/09/2020 09:48

We’re in an isolated cottage in west Wales, having a fabulous time. Weather is glorious, it’s easy to avoid crowds and lots of walks from the cottage. We stocked up with food and drink so no need for shopping.

Couldn’t ask for anything more and certainly wouldn’t even consider going abroad this year 😎🍷

BiddyPop · 14/09/2020 09:52

We had a week away in our own country in July.

We have gone "down home" (2.5 hours from our house) to visit DPs/DMIL for a weekend in June. DH and DD also did a 1 day trip last weekend but I couldn't go (and the trip wasn't for holiday reasons).

I had thought we would be in another part of the country at Oct mid-term for a multi-day sports event that DD is participating in (she would have been "in squad" and we would have gone to a hotel to support her at matches but also get some time off ourselves). But that event is now spread over more days, no overnights, and in our city (due to Covid, and our city being the more central location that has sufficient facilities for all participants).

And it doesn't look like we will be going "down home" for Christmas either - the cottage we've rented before had doubled in price (beyond our budget) and DH didn't want me to look elsewhere. But we're happy to do Christmas here ourselves (we've probably spent about 7 of DD's 13 Christmases in our house, and travelled on the other 6).

Now that DD is back in school, she has sports commitments every weekend (both Saturdays and Sundays). I have Cub Scouts every Saturday. And DH and I have never stopped working - DH is under so much pressure that he could only take that single week when he does usually manage a fortnight.

We'll probably just each take an individual day or 2 ourselves over the autumn rather than actual holidays, and the days of DD's matches at midterm if we are allowed to watch them (which is not looking likely at the moment TBH).

BiddyPop · 14/09/2020 09:53

(By "our own country", I meant that we are not in the UK, but we travelled within the country we live in).

So, you don't in fact, own a country then Wink?
