Have you given up all hope of a holiday this year? Anyone hoping to go away in the October half term? Just interested on peoples thoughts

I am even worried about the plan B holiday we have lined up in the UK now.
I can't see any of us going anywhere. I have just ordered a decent light face tan, at least I will look like I have been somewhere glorious.

We were thinking to book for next year, as already cancelled Christmas trip but now holding off, there is no visibility whatsoever.

whiteroseredrose · 13/09/2020 16:43

We managed to go to Iceland in August (rearranged from April) but won't be going anywhere in October half term even though we have the week off. DH and I can self isolate but DD is at school so can't.

Igotmyholiday · 13/09/2020 16:46

Got summer hol, have October and Christmas booked, October won't happen and I doubt Christmas will either, but compared to many I've been very lucky, I'm not booking for next year until last minute

sorrymrjackson · 13/09/2020 16:46

Currently on holiday abroad at the moment, took some getting here but it was so worth it

Mirrorxx · 13/09/2020 16:46

We have a week in Scotland booked in October which I hope happens.
We are supposed to be visiting elderly relatives in November that has already been rearranged but doesn’t look likely now.
Apart from that we have a couple of U.K. breaks booked in January, March and April next year that I’m hopeful will happen as we have so many cancelled this year.

TabbyStar · 13/09/2020 16:47

Given up, but for financial reasons, income really uncertain and need to build up company reserves again as not entitled to any support. Otherwise I would be happy to go and risk quarantine etc.

gower4 · 13/09/2020 16:47

Given up

emmathedilemma · 13/09/2020 16:51

Self catering in the U.K. with your own household should be a fairly safe bet??

saveforthat · 13/09/2020 16:55

I am in Kefalonia. No quarantine yet. 31 degrees and really quiet. Perfect. Also the passenger locator form worked which I was worried about.

CathyTre · 13/09/2020 17:03

I went to Rhodes for a week and Venice for a week in August. Was great.

rookiemere · 13/09/2020 17:04

@emmathedilemma not with the threat of local lockdown either in your home town, or where you are intending to travel to. Also high risk with DC at school that you'll either be required to self isolate due to being identified through track and trace or potentially having the virus itself.

We looked at booking a new break for October half term with just us, but they charge £60 if you need to rearrange and you lose your money if you need to cancel within 7 days.

MsVestibule · 13/09/2020 17:19

If there wasn't a high risk of having to isolate when we returned, I'd consider going away in October, but we can't having to do that. Anyway, I doubt DH (who loves foreign holidays more than me) would consider travelling by plane ATM.

Is travel insurance even currently valid for Covid-19?

StCharlotte · 13/09/2020 17:47

Nope. Written off 2020. All the more galling as my three closest friends have all managed to get away.

In fact I've only had one week off all year. And it fucking rained. DH had 4 weeks furlough and 2 weeks off between jobs.

I've got three trips booked for next year, first one in May, but I'm not holding out any hope at the moment.

I know it's a first world problem and all that but right now I am very bitter.

barberousbarbara · 13/09/2020 18:10

Self catering in the U.K. with your own household should be a fairly safe bet??

We had to cancel a week self catering in the UK from yesterday due to a local lockdown where travel restrictions are in place. Luckily the holiday company agreed to refund.

We might try and book something last minute towards the end of the year but it's probably unlikely.

StarchyStanley · 13/09/2020 18:17

We haven't booked anything, but are thinking of a UK holiday for half term. Undecided though.

SJaneS48 · 13/09/2020 18:32

Depends on where you are thinking of going (though nowhere is a really a 100% safe bet!). A U.K. break would be pretty likely to go ahead I’d think. We’ve knocked going abroad on the head this year - I’m not judgy of people who have gone /are going though (unlike some of the ‘outraged’ individuals we’ve all seen on here over the last couple of months!), a bit jealous if anything. If you do want to go abroad in October, makes sense to book it as super last minute as possible what with the ‘safe’ list of countries changing weekly. We’ve got an abroad Summer 2021 holiday booked and I’m considering taking DH & DD to Edinburgh for DHs birthday at half term. Would involve flying though which am a little (probably very unnecessarily) ? about.

BBCONEANDTWO · 13/09/2020 18:59

We have a holiday booked to Tenerife just before Christmas to see DH BIL. We've had it booked or absolute ages but I don't want to go but DH is determined to go. don't know what we're going to do about isolating - he'll be due back just. before Christmas and I don't think his insurance will cover him.

Anycrispsleft · 13/09/2020 19:14

@cafesandbookshops check if the markets you're planning in visiting are even going to be on! Our town here in Germany hasn't decided yet whether they are going to hold the Christmas market.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 13/09/2020 19:26

We were hoping to go somewhere sunny late October, but we've given up on that idea now.

We're going to go away for a few days later this month, not very far away, just to have a wee break.

Next autumn hopefully we'll get a mega holiday. But I'm not holding my breath.

Wejustdontknow · 13/09/2020 19:28

We have been looking for a holiday abroad for half term, haven’t booked anything yet and trying not to be to hopeful but you never know, I will be waiting a few more weeks before possibly booking anything. I think Turkey might be an option but don’t think we will be able to go to the canaries this year. Tbh if we can get anywhere warm I will be happy

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/09/2020 19:31

Decided not to bother this year. The only time we could would be October half-term, and the weather might be terrible then.

Georgyporky · 13/09/2020 19:35

Recently returned from Italy - it was great to get away as 2 holidays have already been cancelled this year.

Turkey in October (fingers crossed), & a UK hotel for Xmas.

OldGreyBoots · 13/09/2020 19:57

We're booked up for a B&B at the end of September; we're currently in local lockdown and there's no guidance about holidays other than self catering, so I'm hoping the next couple of weeks clarify one way or the other...

Dailyhandtowelwash · 13/09/2020 20:03

We managed to have a holiday abroad in August although had to navigate flight changes, anxious monitoring of border regimes etc. It was so great to get away and have a break but many times beforehand I queried why on earth we were putting ourselves through the stress.

We have a long weekend booked in the UK in half term that I am entirely expecting not to happen, and have no intention of booking anything else at all now until there is more certainty, however long that takes.

JustSaying101 · 13/09/2020 20:08

Managed to get away during the Summer for a UK break and would like to do something during Oct half term but will probably look more closely at the situation nearer the time. Will be a last minute booking if we do go ahead this year!
