Do you think there’s more racism since the BLM movement?

I was discussing this with my husband this morning and I think misogyny is worse since ‘me too’ happened and I was wondering if you’re seeing the same.

OP posts:

@EDSGFC

There was a specific task force to tackle white on white crime in Glasgow, and guess what? It wasn't referred to as "White on white" crime.....funny that

Ok. So how do they describe it then? How do they explain what their task is if it's, as you say, to tackle white on white crime, how is that explained without using the phrase "white on white"?

It was just called gang crime even though it was mostly white people involved, that's the whole point, colour is never the issue when it comes to white people. It's not the issue when it comes to black people either which is why it shouldn't be referred to as black crime.
EDSGFC · 14/09/2020 17:52

AryaStarkWolf

But you said the specific task force was to tackle white on white crime. Now you're saying it was gang crime, so not specifically white on white crime? If it was to tackle white on white crime, or the gangs were only white, then I'd have no problem with them describing it as white on white crime - we'd know who they were targeting and where the intervention needed to be happening but I can see that you don't agree.

How should such crimes be identified going forward? What's the best way to describe it? Is a general label such as mugging or knife crime or gang crime specific enough?

@EDSGFC

You're triggered because your entitlement has been challenged, I would say it's laughable but this is part of the problem.

The majority of people I have seen accused of pedophilia is white men. Shall we say that white people aren't allowed to work with children and we should profile you all?
Would you expect to be treated differently (assuming you are) because you are white and white men are the main perpetuators of pedophilia? Do you think you should be harassed by the police for this, the same way in which black people are because of 'black on black' crime or fitting a stereotype?

If you think it's fair to target black people on this basis, then it can only be fair to target white people too no?

EDSGFC · 14/09/2020 18:25

How does someone who goes through the world comparatively (I am not negating the misogyny that all women experience etc) anonymous ever understand what it means to be judged (largely negatively) On sight

I think quite a lot of people do have some experience of that though. Disabled people for a start are often judged on sight. But of course, we all experience life differently and we don't all feel the same even about the exact same experience.

Jascarm · 14/09/2020 18:26

@Bateshotel couldn't have put it better myself!

EDSGFC · 14/09/2020 18:37

Jascarm

I'm not triggered at all, just entering into a discussion.

Should all white people be banned from working with children because most paedophiles are white men? Well, no, because I wouldn't expect all black people be banned from something based on the behaviour of some black people. But do I object to you saying that most paedophiles are white? No.

Would I expect Tobe treated differently on the basis that paedophiles are mainly white men? Well, I'm not a white man so on that basis, no. Would I expect white men to be treated differently - no, unless it could be proven that it was a proportionate response.

Do I think white people should be harassed by the police? Not generally no. But then I don't think that anyone should be harassed by the police. If the police were looking for a white, middle aged woman with blonde hair and a limp in connection with a crime then yes, I'd expect them to stop any of us who fitted that description.

Basically, I think we should all be treated equally by the police, regardless of our sex, age, colour, religion etc. If police decide that it's necessary to stop and search white people I would accept that. But then I'm not fussed about other issues that people consider civil rights, such as ID cards, or now, the track and trace system, so maybe my views aren't representative.

Simple? Really?

I'm not gaslighting, I was answering the questions that you asked me directly.

But lovely of you to throw in not only an ableist insult but also a misogynistic one too.

PablosHoney · 14/09/2020 19:01

Not exactly the topic of the thread but George Floyds murder was discussed at my DS’s primary school in an age appropriate way but he has somehow translated this into the police being bad, I took him to the shops and he shrank back when he saw an Officer approaching. When I asked him why he said ‘Police will arrest and hurt you for no reason’ and when I tried to say they wouldn’t he just said ‘well they did it to that man and other people’

You said the met police force was put together because black people wanted us to 'stop killing each other'

Where did I say that?

You have a lot of time on your hands Karen. - can you please stop with this misogynistic put down?

You asked me multiple questions and are now berating me because I responded.

Then you reverted to ableist insults and misogynistic (and possibly racist depending on whose version of "Karen" you believe) put downs.

Don't worry, I won't engage further. I'll leave you to the echo chamber you clearly desire.

Jascarm · 14/09/2020 19:19

*devisive not decisive

Jascarm · 14/09/2020 19:28

@EDSGFC

Wasn't "black on black" crime coined after the Met were asked to specifically set up a task force to tackle it though, in part by communities concerned that their young people were being stabbed and killed?
@EDSGFC

What did you mean when you wrote that?

Lol oh here we go am I the angry black woman now? You were going off earlier, why the change of heart? It's not nice being targeted is it? You're the one who endorses this though? You are happy for the police to target people because of 'black on black crime'. Does this not feel...fair?? Lol

The term Karen is used to describe ANYONE, who has the same line of thought as you.

Jascarm · 14/09/2020 19:33

And I sincerely apologise if I offended anyone by calling the person simple.

Maybe I could have put this better and said they have quite a basic thought process?

I'm always learning and happy to be corrected once taught.

EDSGFC · 14/09/2020 19:35

What did you mean when you wrote that?

I meant what it says, not what you accused me of saying, including that the met police force was put together to stop black people killing each other and they needed an intervention, which I definitely did not say and I certainly don't think the entire met police force was put together for only one purpose.

Secondly, I've not accused you of being an angry black woman. I accused you of using a derogatory term towards some disabled people (simple) and also of using a misogynistic insult - Karen (which is also thought to be racist too as it's only levelled at white, middle aged women). So nothing to do with your race but with the insults you are choosing to fling about. Now you're derailing by continuing your personal attack on me so I shall leave you to it.

BelleHathor · 14/09/2020 19:58

Operation Trident was set up by the Metropolitan Police to specifically to tackle gang crime which was having a disproportionately negative effect within the Black community.

There is racism in the U.K., I'm sure black people encounter it every day, stop and search is used to stop knifing sin London - but thug cops in the USA shooting unarmed black people in the back is not what we should be concentrating on in The U.K.
Fight for equality in education, the workplace, positions of authority etc. That's hopefully doable - fixing gun toting police in the US isn't.

Straven123 · 14/09/2020 21:20

Replying to @JustAnotherPoster00
Straven you dont believe POC in the uk when they talk about how they encounter racism every single day....

bellyhop · 14/09/2020 21:38

It’s created more of a divide between black and white. I’m black and noticed racist comments from others who are also black so it goes both ways.

As a PP said I’ve also had some white people almost go out of their way to prove they aren’t racist, which I find it offensive tbh. Where race wasn’t seen it now is and I will never support the BLM movement.

@EDSGFC, sorry to @ you, but I did want to make sure that you saw my post. It is not meant as a derail, I just wanted to say something to you EDS, and felt that if I pm'd you, it would seem like I was secretly backing you up, but not prepared to put my head above the parapet.
I agree with every single thing that you have said on this thread. As I am hopeless at remembering names, I have no idea if that goes for any comments or OP's that you may have made on any other threads.
Whenever I have made comments on other threads that are to do with POC, some people seem to almost get a perverse pleasure out of misunderstanding what I am saying. They really appear to want me to be a racist, so that they can belittle me, and feel themselves far superior to me. Most of the people who have done this have given their colour, and if we have to acknowlege peoples colour (because otherwise we are one of those awful breed of colour blind people), the majority of them were white - as am I. For anyone else who may be reading this, this last paragraph of mine is, MY opinion, so please do not try and tar EDS character with my opinion, it is not anything that s/he has even hinted at. I am sure there will be many posters who will take my paragraph as being total proof of my racism - I am not racist, I find it deeply saddening to keep on being misjudged as such, but if it makes any of you feel even a little better about yourselves to call me such, or any other names - maybe Karen - whatever the colour of your skin, or your gender, then I am glad to have been of some service. Please remember I give these views in my name only. BLM, but I do not support everything about the UK and USA BLM organisations.

bellyhop · 15/09/2020 03:25

@bellyhop we don't want you either 🤢🤮🤮🤮

Can you explain what you don't support about Black Lives Matter...you know as a black person (if you actually are)**

You question my ‘blackness’ and I’m glad you find it revolving that I don’t subscribe to the BLM political agenda! As well meaning as the underlying message may be you sound as blind to this as most others. Should every woman support feminist movements? Does it make them less of a women if they don’t?

I’m proud to be a black woman. But I also don’t only want to be seen as a woman who is black! Which is exactly what the BLM movement is doing, creating what it’s fighting against.
