To be annoyed that we already have a sickness bug from school

Only been back at school 5 minutes, after 5 months of education disruption, and eldest child has spent most of today vomiting. He hasn’t been anywhere else all week, so it must have come from school which means that someone has probably sent a child in after sickness (I checked with child that nobody was sent home sick this week).

So now I’m feeling dizzy and sprawled on the sofa, and I’ve got DC1 here with me on Monday now missing a day of school. I mean obviously kids get sick but seriously? Already?

@BrandyandBabycham

Can’t remember who posted that they would rather get Covid than Noro but come on, seriously? A dear family friend of ours died from Covid in May. Noro makes you feel rubbish but doesn’t kill you
Oh please stop spouting nonsense! Norovirus kills 200,000 people a year!
Montsti · 12/09/2020 19:37

My 4 children have been at school for the past 10 weeks (South Africa so Winter and they started at the peak of the infections here) and none of them have caught anything bar a very mild cold and cough twice for my 2 year old, the only one that doesn’t have to wear a mask..

My eldest 3 (10, 8 and 5) have to wear masks at school (including during land sports and dance classes) and all 4 have their temperature taken when they go into school and have to use sanitizer on entry and regularly during the day. All teachers and assistants as well as maintenance staff have to wear masks at all times.

Teateaandmoretea · 12/09/2020 19:43

@Montsti you are just one family ...!

Fingers crossed mine haven’t yet either but I’m sure it will happen soon.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 12/09/2020 20:02

I’m annoyed with the other parent (don’t know who) who must have flouted the quarantine rules somehow It's likely the bug got around before they knew their child had it.

Flamingolingo · 12/09/2020 20:06

Lots of discussion about the benefits of being exposed to viruses regularly for general immunity and I agree. We are lucky because our kids were only at home full time until June and then back to school and nursery (and after that summer childcare). So plenty of mixing with others.

Someone said he must have poor hand hygiene, well, obviously. He’s 6.

I think the main problem is that I’m an emetophobe so for me a sickness bug in the house is a real nightmare. Noro is a Dante’s inner circle type event for me. And lots of people are saying that it’s probably not people skipping the 48 hour isolation - possibly - but I know that plenty of parents don’t seem to think it applies to them. I’ve even seen on one occasion a child vomit over the pavement round the corner from school and still be sent in.

We've seen this a few times 🤮

Flamingolingo · 12/09/2020 20:12

@gluteustothemaximus gross isn’t it. It was a different class to my child and I was so shocked that I didn’t dare say anything but I think now I would.

Our school seems to have it going round (so far dc haven’t caught it). So annoying! Especially with all the extra hand washing etc .. it’s still going round!

Monkeynuts18 · 12/09/2020 20:25

I’m always a bit surprised when people talk about ‘stomach bugs’ like they’re definitely contracted from other people

I know norovirus is passed from person to person but it’s incredibly contagious - if a school has an outbreak of noro it’s a pretty major event.

Isn’t it just as likely that your child ate something dodgy, didn’t wash their hands before eating, or didn’t wash their hands after using the loo?

Flamingolingo · 12/09/2020 20:27

Maybe, but we’ve all eaten the same. He will definitely have washed hands before eating or after the loo because he’s autistic and quite particular about that.

Did he have a temperature? I usually find that if it’s an actual tummy bug (rather than just an upset stomach) then it comes with a temperature and fatigue.
Lalanbaba · 12/09/2020 20:34

But surely someone can be a carrier of norovirus/cold and not actually show signs. (same as asymptomatic covid)

Jemma2907 · 12/09/2020 20:51

My 5yr old son was sick at school in class on Thursday after only being there 20 minutes! I'd had no signs beforehand, he'd eaten breakfast, got himself dressed. Been playing with a friend in the queue, had run into the classroom, all fine! Then blurgggh! I got called to collect him and he wasn't sick again at all (had to keep him off Thursday and Friday though). I didnt send him in sick, sometime these things just happen!

Flamingolingo · 12/09/2020 21:02

No fever. Sick/heaving for about an hour. Then slept for a couple and woke up bright and hungry.

No sickness but DS has got a stinking cold. Nothing worse than sickness though. You'd think 6 months off school and extra cleaning would minimise it wouldn't you? But yeah I expect someone's sent their kid after vomiting.

One time. I over heard a mum say that her child had vomiting and diarrhoea during the night bug was desperate to go on the school trip the next day they sent them in.. 🤬

I thought all school trips were cancelled this term, or is that just our school?
theviewfromhalfwaydown · 13/09/2020 06:54

My youngest's school sent out letters last year telling us that children don't have to follow the 48hour rule if their sickness was a one off or caused by eating something dodgy. Needless to say the rate of kids getting sick has gone through the roof.

I work in a school and nearly all the kids have colds already and my 1:1 was sick all over me at the beginning of the week. So great start back.

OhWifey · 13/09/2020 07:33

@Soubriquet

No bugs or sickness here touch wood but dd seems to have managed to hurt her knee and she has no idea how she did it

It’s swollen and she keeps limping

Have a look at transient synovitis
aintnothinbutagstring · 13/09/2020 07:45

My DC have both been off with sickness in the past week. Funnily enough though my first instinct wasn't to blame other parents Confused Since my DC have been other places apart from school, they could have picked it up anywhere. And there is other viruses that cause sickness, apart from noro, flu or strep throat can cause vomiting and diarrhea, so I don't think the 48 hr rule would make a difference in those cases. Covid could be spread by asymptomatic cases anyway so that will make it very hard to prevent unless we have mass testing.

Flamingolingo · 13/09/2020 08:04

@Soubriquet - if there is definitely no trauma/injury to the area then keep an eye on her please. Sometimes infection can settle into a joint and be quite serious.

Soubriquet · 13/09/2020 08:15

Thank you to both posters who responded to me

We are keeping a close eye on it whilst giving her some paracetamol and ibuprofen. She is also under strict orders to rest

If it’s no better we are going to the doctors

BrandyandBabycham · 13/09/2020 08:55

I want to apologise for my post. I’m very upset about my friend & didn’t think before I posted.

Nat6999 · 13/09/2020 09:28

Ds school ignores the 48 hour rule for D & V, they expect pupils back the day after it stops. No bloody why it goes round like wildfire, last winter they had over 200 pupils & nearly 50 staff off with it at the same time, doesn't help when there is no soap or paper towels provided in toilets either, ds said it hasn't improved this term even with Covid, he has a bottle of hand sanitiser, wet wipes & a mini hand wash in his bag.

Bromley4ever · 14/09/2020 11:50

Update: son cannot taste a thing, says apples taste of water and is lying on the sofa with cough and chest pains. He loves school and is really disappointed he can't go in! We are all self-isolating of course including older son who has already missed half of Y8. I don't blame anyone, school never said they were a risk-free environment and it's worth the risk to send him in, but I'm so annoyed that there are no tests available.

Flamingolingo · 14/09/2020 11:57

@Bromley4ever ugh sounds ominous. Where are you? What are community Covid levels like? And can you even get a test?
