Alan Sugar says put a suit on, put a dress on, put your makeup on

Do your hair and get back into work..
All from the comfort of his own home. Mind blown.

Lord Alan is of course just worried about all these office blocks that he owns and rents out through Amshold and Amsprop in places like Mayfair being empty and the losses he will now incur due to the fact that we have found a better way to live and work.

The world is changing. Either adapt or disappear.

P.s. we are working Alan, just not in your offices. Because we can do it well from home.

It certainly feels like the world is changing doesn’t it? But the old establishment are clinging on like limpets, which is they the government are also so keen for people to go back to the office. The Tory party is funded by these people so it’s in their best interests.

Lemononachair · 12/09/2020 11:46

If I wore a suit or a dress at work I wouldn't be allowed in as it would be against health & safety and makeup is pretty much pointless 😂

I get his point though and personally I am dying to get back to work as I've been furloughed on MW since lockdown and am absolutely sick to the back teeth of being bored and broke. If I would go back today I would but my workplace is still closed so I physically can't. I have been searching for another job but tbh my job when I was doing it does suit me well and they keep dangling a reopening date in front of me like a carrot so I've stayed where I am. My job is impossible to do from home so that whole issue is entirely moot for me.

Just pisses me off sometimes when people talk like everyone in the bloody world has a 9-5, Mon-Fri office job. Some people have been working this whole time and others are literally not allowed back yet. Shut up Sugar!

ClementineWoolysocks · 12/09/2020 11:46

Who gives two shits what 'Lord' Sugar says?

BlackberrySky · 12/09/2020 11:46

Alan Sugar comes across as having a very old fashioned attitude to work, so it's not surprising he is struggling with innovation in this area.

toconclude · 12/09/2020 11:47

@Ponoka7

I liked Alan Sugar until this. My DD wfh (she now has some time in her workplace) has, never been happier. She's created a good work/life balance and is more productive and less stressed.

I always thought that he was a more well rounded person, than to just focus on profit.

Hahaha haha. You can fool some of the people all the time. Sugar is a unprincipled capitalist robber baron with slick PR.
QuestionableMouse · 12/09/2020 11:48

He's quite missed the point that a huge section of people are already back in their workplace and don't work in an office...

Heptember · 12/09/2020 11:49

@WanderingMilly

I went back to work last week, this week has been a week from hell (and I only work part-time). I am tired, exhausted due to long shifts in a residential school..... Despite all this, yes, I would say get back to the office/workplace, home is not a good place to work permanently.

You don't get the same amount done at home, nor the same companionship of office colleagues. You do not sound professional when a client rings up and your kids are playing in the background, or your dog barking, or your partner is calling you for dinner from the kitchen (yes, I've had all these on calls to home-workers). You also need a proper separation from work/homelife, to leave everything behind at the office/school etc. is better for mental health. It is also better for our city centre economy.

With respect, you probably need to change all the 'you's in your second paragraph to 'I'

I don't have any of those issues, many other people don't either. To be fair though, I worked from home a lot before this shitshow kicked off, as did most of my colleagues.

LakieLady · 12/09/2020 11:50

Easy for him to say. He doesn't have to get on an overcrowded train at sparrow's fart and pay £5k pa to ride in cattle class to London, and not get home till 7.30 (and that's on a good day, when no minor weather event or signal failure has disrupted the entire southern region).

Oysterbabe · 12/09/2020 11:54

I like WFH but have an office at home I can close when I finish. I only use that area for work so it feels separate from family life. It's unlikely I'll ever return full time to the office.

AiryFairyMum · 12/09/2020 11:54

Agreed! It's landlords behind the push to get people back to offices, not businesses. Lots of property owners are big party donors and lobbyists, hence politicians calling for a return to offices too. I own a business. Theres no way we will be returning to our rented city centre office soon, if ever. It's a waste of money.

Lemons1571 · 12/09/2020 11:55

@QuestionableMouse I guess they’re just not working in his office!

Oh and are his grandchildren back to state schools with 33 in a class and zero social distancing? No? Thought not.

SummerHouse · 12/09/2020 11:56

Put your make up on you pompous old man.

Was dreading the back to school but had a moment last week when I just thought "why is this so easy!?"

Coz I am not doing an hour and a half round trip to be distracted from work with inane gossip all day.

echt · 12/09/2020 11:57

I teach remotely and am expected to be professional in appearance on live lessons. I wear make-up so as not to frighten the horses.

A scarf and an anonymous top is quite sufficient, I've found.

luckylavender · 12/09/2020 11:57

He's been a nightmare all the way through this. He doesn't really believe in Coronavirus.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 12/09/2020 11:59

I’m confused. Do I have to put a suit AND a dress on? Isn’t that going to be a bit hot? It’s predicted to be 30 degrees in London on Monday! Also, I work in a casual dress office - won’t my colleagues think it’s strange if I suddenly come in wearing a suit?

I don’t think he’s thought this through at all.

Auridon4life · 12/09/2020 12:02

How is he still in business? Who the hell who take him seriously after that awful TV show? Had literally nothing to do with standard business practices.

OddBoots · 12/09/2020 12:07

At the moment I am back in the office about 50% of the time and I hate it, I am lucky enough that I can walk to work (albeit 50 mins walk each way) so don't have to use public transport (there is no parking) but the vigilance you need to maintain 100% through the day to keep yourself and people around safe is so draining.

Every time I touch something like the pencil to sign in or the photocopier or even a door handle or hand rail I have instructions that I have to wipe it down after or use a wipe to touch it in the first place. I eat at my desk as the kitchen and staff room are closed.

You can't just look at someone else's screen to get or give a quick bit of help because you can't get close enough so you end up using Teams across the same room but the internet in the office is struggling because other people are in video meetings with other people all at the same time.

The other people in the office (staff and customers) range from those who think the restrictions are silly and loudly say 'you don't need to socially distance with me' to those who are anxiously washing their hands every 5 minutes with everything in between.

I am glad to still have a job and I am doing my best and in my role I know I need to be on site for some of the time but to put this state on people who don't need to be there is silly.

Mythologies · 12/09/2020 12:07

Want to see Alan Sugar in a dress and makeup

Lockheart · 12/09/2020 12:09

twitter.com/utb_smith/status/1304400369552896003?s=19

This sums it up quite well...

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 12/09/2020 12:09

He's always been an elitist, sexist, robber baron dick his whole life.

VinylDetective · 12/09/2020 12:12

@Lockheart

It certainly does. He’s a dinosaur.
D4rwin · 12/09/2020 12:16

A lot of his generation seem to lack motivation once they are at home. I guess it's good and bad. Perhaps he's better at drawing a line between home/ work BUT unfortunately so few jobs pay enough for younger people to be able to afford the luxury of downtime. I know enough people doing more hours from home than the office so they'd be more than happy to be less available but their employers can see reduced overheads and greater productivity with people working from home.

VenusTiger · 12/09/2020 12:16

For some you're not working from home, you're living at work- it's definitely taking it's toll on my DH - he needs those corridor conversations back and the team morale feeling back.
Alan Sugar isn't wrong or right - he's trying to break the fear mould set by media.

essexmum777 · 12/09/2020 12:17

A lot of commercial properties are invested in by pension companies.

Tanders · 12/09/2020 12:20

I'm in a fortunate position where I don't mind travelling to work (very short commute and I enjoy the environment and my colleagues), and am also lucky to have an office room at home so am comfortable working from home too. I manage quite a large team and I really don't see the point of dragging people in who are much happier, just as productive, and still very much part of the team through catch ups etc just for the sake of it. Similarly those who want to be in sometimes or all of the time can do and we put a lot of work into making it covid compliant but also as pleasant as we could. I do half and half at the moment, depending on what's going on. We are also saving money by not paying clients travel expenses!
