Where did the letter D go?

NachoNachoMan · 11/09/2020 18:38

Why do I keep seeing the word and spelled an - with the writer omitting the letter d?

E.g. Me an Charlie went to the beach today.

I get spelling isn't everyone's strong point - I am a numbers person myself, and spell words incorrectly sometimes, but surely and is one of those common words that kids learn to spell pretty early on in their education.

There's common errors like there, their and they're etc. which I can understand why people get those wrong.

Is an instead of and a thing now? Or is it people being sloppy? I've seen friends who have a decent level of education spelling it like that - and it drives me potty.

Surely if you can't be bothered to write three letters a-n-d you can use & or +...

Today I have seen two posts on social media (not mumsnet) containing words with the letter D missing - describing someone as a legen and someone else saying they don't understan... my phone has tried to auto correct them as I am typing this post. It does make me question if it's now a thing to miss out the letter d!

YABU: Shurruuupp grammar Nazi, me an me m8s are legens an can spell however we want

YANBU: I've noticed it and it annoys me too

Never seen it

caughtalightsneeze · 11/09/2020 18:41

It's probably autocorrect. Most people post on social media from phones.

My phone changes things all the time, and sometimes even when I notice it and change it back, it still changes it again when I post.

OwlBeThere · 11/09/2020 18:43

Probably some kid speak thing you and I are too old to understand 😂

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 11/09/2020 18:45

I don't think you're being unreasonable but along with restoring the letter "D" to its rightful place can we please place a ban on "of" instead of "have" and ditch the word "gawjus".

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 11/09/2020 18:47

It's a thing. Makes me want to scream, but yes, it's a thing. Arg.

Crystal87 · 11/09/2020 18:48

I've noticed this too. I was invited to the Christening of Michelle "an" Andy's child recently.
The one that really winds me up is seeing "alot" when it's two separate words, " been" instead of being and " incase" instead of in case.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 11/09/2020 18:48

What annoys me more is "ano" for "I know". That shit can fuck right off.

Plussizejumpsuit · 11/09/2020 18:52

Where are you seeing this? I've never seen it

RelaisBlu · 11/09/2020 18:52

can we please place a ban on "of" instead of "have"

This winds me up too

WildAboutMyPlanet · 11/09/2020 18:58

Loose and lose drives me bonkers.

“I don’t want to loose my money”. When did it gain an extra o?

VoluptuaSneezelips · 11/09/2020 19:01

Could be auto-correct or perhaps some people have learning disabilities such as Dyslexia and do not notice the dropped letters. I actually suspect it is colloquial though, people writing how they would pronounce words in their regional dialects. I often do it myself on social media as im mostly sharing with people who I know very well, people who know how i talk and who are not expecting me to have perfect spelling and grammar.

Katinski · 11/09/2020 19:01

Please can we have a Universal ban on 'hubby'?

DamnShesaSexyChick · 11/09/2020 19:06

I’ve noticed tho instead of though a lot recently. I always wonder if people who spell lose as loose think everyone else is spelling it wrong, especially on the weight loss threads where most people spell it correctly but there’s always a few who repeatedly use loose.

Yes, and that definitely will be the reasons for many misspellings and grammar annoyances.

And I do agree it's probably a regional thing (I am in Yorkshire) - my friends who have seen do it I have known a long time and know they have no issues along those lines. I'm sure they've not always done it.

There are common errors, not there’s.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 11/09/2020 19:14

I think putting the anus on auto-correct may be unfair. It is probably being developed by them what does that sort of spellin and the like.
Oh gawd, me grammar checker's checker gorne orf on it own... Sort of fing.

Sugarhouse · 11/09/2020 19:22

Hes instead of his annoys me

Pinkshrimp · 11/09/2020 19:23

I have a friend who just types n.
As in ‘David n Jo went to town today’. I’m assuming it’s just to save typing actual letters but I find it odd in a mid 40’s man in a management role.

3rd option of I've never noticed it but it would annoy me too. It's not tight up there though. Not as much as ect or should of.

TitianaTitsling · 11/09/2020 19:26

Happy birthday to are mum.. Why is are being used for our?

Gag1964 · 11/09/2020 19:28

I spotted 'an' replacing 'and' this week, when marking writing (Yorkshire)

VestaTilley · 11/09/2020 19:29

I’ve never seen this!

Saucy99 · 11/09/2020 19:30

Charlie and I went to the beach. If you're going to write a post criticising grammar...

Probablygreen · 11/09/2020 19:30

Oops 🤣
