Where did the letter D go?

NachoNachoMan · 11/09/2020 18:38

Why do I keep seeing the word and spelled an - with the writer omitting the letter d?

E.g. Me an Charlie went to the beach today.

I get spelling isn't everyone's strong point - I am a numbers person myself, and spell words incorrectly sometimes, but surely and is one of those common words that kids learn to spell pretty early on in their education.

There's common errors like there, their and they're etc. which I can understand why people get those wrong.

Is an instead of and a thing now? Or is it people being sloppy? I've seen friends who have a decent level of education spelling it like that - and it drives me potty.

Surely if you can't be bothered to write three letters a-n-d you can use & or +...

Today I have seen two posts on social media (not mumsnet) containing words with the letter D missing - describing someone as a legen and someone else saying they don't understan... my phone has tried to auto correct them as I am typing this post. It does make me question if it's now a thing to miss out the letter d!

YABU: Shurruuupp grammar Nazi, me an me m8s are legens an can spell however we want

YANBU: I've noticed it and it annoys me too

Never. Ever. Put your anus on autocorrect

NachoNachoMan · 11/09/2020 19:37

@Saucy99

Charlie and I went to the beach. If you're going to write a post criticising grammar...
That was intentional Grin

I did double check the post to make sure I hadn't made any errors that I was critiquing Wink hopefully there isn't any!

@Crystal87

I've noticed this too. I was invited to the Christening of Michelle "an" Andy's child recently. The one that really winds me up is seeing "alot" when it's two separate words, " been" instead of being and " incase" instead of in case.

People have always said "an/n/un" for "and" in different accents. It's just that until texting, we rarely wrote down colloquialisms/pronunciation in English unless it was written speech in fiction. Although 'n' for "and" has made many an appearance on cheesy shop signs, menus and adverts for decades. Fish 'n' chips, anyone?

If it's not in a formal document, it doesn't bother me.

Formal Arabic (the language that is written down and used for books, education, newspapers, business) in all Arab speaking countries has a different grammar, different words, even different pronunciation of letters, from the spoken colloquial language that everyone uses day to day. The spoken languages of different Arab countries are as different as Portuguese and Spanish. An Egyptian Arabic speaker may not understand Algerian Arabic. There is no correct spelling of a colloquial word as they are not written down... which can be quite challenging if you are learning dialect and trying to write down vocabulary to learn Grin

@Probablygreen

That was supposed to be the joke! [sigh]

UnaCorda · 11/09/2020 19:52

Not quite the same thing, but the woman on reception where I work always says, "Good mornin'!" whenever I enter the building. I usually walk away muttering, "It has a 'g' at the end," between gritted teeth. (I do return her greeting first.)

People don't read. Combine that with not realising (or not caring) that English frequently can't be spelt as it sounds and you have the recipe for a SPAG disaster.

Staffy1 · 11/09/2020 20:00

It also annoys me when the d is missing from things like "bake beans". Grrr...its "baked beans".

GlassInEachHand · 11/09/2020 20:13

Autocorrect. Almost defiantly. Grin

MilesToGoBeforeISleep · 11/09/2020 20:14

@Staffy1 My mum always insists on watching a 'boxed set' for the same reason 😂

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 11/09/2020 20:19

The 'd' has run away with 'to be', 'ed' and 'ing'. Which I why I keep seeing 'needs gone ASAP' and 'needs clean'.

Brighterthansunflowers · 11/09/2020 20:23

I think it’s people writing how they would speak

As long as they’re only doing it on social media which is informal, and not doing it in job applications/essays/work reports etc then it’s irritating but not the end of the world

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 11/09/2020 20:23

YANBU - MN is not the place for elocution...
Some blame it on ‘autocorrect’, others on being from the North / East / West 🤔
Annoying grammar with ‘could of’ and alike 😔

bluebeck · 11/09/2020 20:24

Genuinely I have never seen this.

Staffy1 · 11/09/2020 20:26

@MilesToGoBeforeISleep, your mum sounds like a sensible lady Smile

Thinkingg · 11/09/2020 20:27

YABU. Linguistic diversity is fascinating. Smile

DrDetriment · 11/09/2020 20:31

I hate when people say or write 'I text him'. No you didn't. You texted him.

anotherwinkywinkybumbum · 11/09/2020 20:31

@TheFormerPorpentinaScamander, that is what I came to complain about. Makes me rage on the inside. What is so hard about adding the word "to be" after "need"? Argh!

Justmuddlingalong · 11/09/2020 20:34

If you ever watch Pointless, you might notice that Alexander Armstrong says "goobye" without a d. And once you hear it, you can't unhear it.

Bluetrews25 · 11/09/2020 20:35

Never seen the missing D thing written down, but I can tell you where the Ds have gone......they have taken the place of 'th' in many songs.
'he left her dere wid more dan tears an hurt to carry' to quote Rockabye which makes me want to scream.

DCIHoops · 11/09/2020 20:45

@WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat

I think putting the anus on auto-correct may be unfair. It is probably being developed by them what does that sort of spellin and the like. Oh gawd, me grammar checker's checker gorne orf on it own... Sort of fing.
Anus!!! Bad bad autocorrect:)
SquirrelFan · 11/09/2020 20:46

@Staffy1 or ice tea

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 11/09/2020 20:52

@DCIHoops

That was supposed to be the joke! [sigh]

Pixxie7 · 11/09/2020 20:53

I put it down to the increased use of texting.

MondeoFan · 11/09/2020 20:56

I hate "does anyone no where I can buy..."
"Neyone no any good film to watch"

Staffy1 · 11/09/2020 20:59

@SquirrelFan, aarrgghh! I can't bear it Grin
