I hate the breadbin it's so big and cumbersome - we have a traditional sliding door brabantia one.
Is it bad to keep bread in a cupboard or drawer?

Ours is in a cupboard. Do bread bins really make much difference

Brighterthansunflowers · 11/09/2020 19:46

I recently purchased the first bread bin of my adult life (I’m in my mid30s) and I love it, but then I previously just had bread in its bag on the worktop. My family always had a had a bread bin growing up, it was just never something that seemed a viral purchase until now. It’s probably lockdown boredom!

middleager · 11/09/2020 19:47

surely you mean the fridge?

ChaoticGouda · 11/09/2020 19:49

We always buy pre-sliced. Much easier to bung it into the cupboard where the cereals and baked beans are Smile

Thehop · 11/09/2020 19:51

Ours lives in a cupboard. I’ve never had a bread bin.

BookcaseOfWonder · 11/09/2020 19:51

We got pantry moths last year, so now all carbs are in containers. We have a metal bread bin with a lift off lid, looks ok and works much better than other designs and plenty of room for rolls, wraps, pancakes etc.

dudsville · 11/09/2020 19:51

Ooh, I'm sticking mine in the cupboard in the morning! We also have a big bin. It was stored away ages ago as it was simply needed too much counter space. Since then bread has just been left around on the counter. I know just the cupboard...

BlackbirdFirst · 11/09/2020 19:52

We have bread maker bread so no plastic bag.
And bagels. And crumpets and other bread products.
I thought a bread bin was special and Narnia like as it can breathe a bit and not go damp.
Idk they just seemed right but it's so annoying.

There is never leftover bread to make it to a bin or cupboard! Bread is eaten on the day bought - what kind of heathens are you that you have leftover bread??

BlackbirdFirst · 11/09/2020 19:55
  • keep their contents at room temperature, prolonging edible storage time
-have a lid loose enough to allow airflow, reducingcondensation, which helps to prevent the formation ofmold -have a lid tight enough to slow the drying process as well as to protect the contents from mice and all other pests, including ants and flies.

@Sidewinder30 are you in France? Our french friend hated the english idea of keeping bread for tomorrow.

I keep mine in the fridge. My in-laws always complained about our cold bread until they tried it because they had spoiling issues. Lasts a good long while in the fridge.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 11/09/2020 19:56

Freezer (if it is sliced) you can prise a few slices off when you need them
NEVER a fridge it just dries them out.

Maryann1975 · 11/09/2020 19:59

When I read your title I wondered where else you would keep bread if it wasn’t in a cupboard. I never thought about having a bread bin. I’m trying to reduce the amount of stuff on the side anyway, so wouldn’t want a bread bin out all the time. It would probably need to be massive with all the bread we get through.

I’ve never noticed a problem with crumbs though. Everything stays in its bag or if the bag gets ripped in a plastic lunch box type thing.

The kind who doesn't like shopping Grin - but if I buy fresh rolls DH doesn't even get a look in!

When my kitchen was being designed that was one of my choices, bread in a deep drawer. It has a built in stainless steel bin that can be removed to clean. There's room behind for the larger cereal boxes. I love it.

Bought sliced bread lives in the fridge. Left over home made or heels of French bread go into the bread bin.

whirlwindwallaby · 11/09/2020 20:09

I'd forget I had it. If I buy bakery bread it lives in its paper bag on the big wooden chopping board. Sliced bread in the same place for a day or two if I want some fresh, then in the freezer for toast.

Sidewinder30 · 11/09/2020 20:21

Yes, French. Day old bread is for making breadcrumbs, or toast perhaps. But the thought that you'd keep bread around long enough to go mouldy if not properly stored... no. But OP, just use the cupboard and a brown paper bag. I can see why a bread bin would take up valuable counter space.

Sidewinder30 · 11/09/2020 20:23

i see what you mean @forgetthehousework! That is indeed a good reason.

Horehound · 11/09/2020 20:24

We have a bread drawer and it's awesome

jomaIone · 11/09/2020 20:25

My bread bin is full of charging cables, and random shite I don't want out on the side.

My bread, wraps, crumpets, bagels, all bread products all live on the top shelf of the freezer. Just prize it apart and defrost on the side.

SBTLove · 11/09/2020 20:25

Cupboard or fresh on chopping board, I don’t like stuff cluttering up the surfaces, no way I’d have a bread bin, I thought they were a relic of the past tbf.

Flibbitygibbit · 11/09/2020 20:27

I've got a lovely breadbin. Makes the bread go bloody mouldy though 😡
