Keeping son off school

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 09:06

Ds 15 ,has woken up with a stuffy nose this morning and sneezing a lot, i have decided to keep him off school due to the sneezing mostly
Do you think that is the right thing to do at the moment ?
No covid symptoms from the three to isolate but will keep eye on temp all day etc
He does sometimes get some allergies so could even be that , but friend thinks I am crazy keeping him off
I spoke to school who are fine with it and agree if he is sneezing won't be comfortable for him in classroom either
What would you do ?

Send him to school

IKEA888 · 11/09/2020 09:08

I'm in Scotland and they issued guidelines as when schools first went back lots of kids had colds and patents kept them off as unsure what to do.
If it's a stuffy or runny nose it's apparently unlikely to be COVID and the guidelines here ate Tosend as normal

ChanceChanceChance · 11/09/2020 09:09

I'd keep him off, as you already have checked with school. What's the point of giving it to lots more people?

The more we limit bugs spreading, the less likely the teacher will have to selfisolate whilst waiting for a test.

catsarecute · 11/09/2020 09:09

I would keep him off. Hope he's better soon.

kidsdrivingmemad · 11/09/2020 09:09

My eldest has started with a cold and cough, no temperature so he's still been going to school.

Cough is one of the symptoms to keep them off and test. It is on all the posters on the school gates?
Sausage1989 · 11/09/2020 09:15

@kidsdrivingmemad you shouldn't be sending your child to school with a cough and cold.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 09:18

I have kept him off more because of the constant sneezing as i don't think that is great in the classroom one for others but also for him
As he will feel very self conscious
Im not exactly rushing him for a test as he doesn't meet criteria at present
If just a snuffy nose then not so bad but constant sneezing ( which he seems to do with great force and extremely loud )

steff13 · 11/09/2020 09:19

I would have given him some allergy medicine to see if that resolved it.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 09:21

@steff13 i will do so today
But literally the sneezing episodes started 20 mins before due to school , he did wake up with a stuffy nose but when he went to bed he was fine

OP posts:
Mrsbclinton · 11/09/2020 09:26

I would keep him off as he is only going to give it to someone else in the class room.

Ever before covid I always thought it very irresponsible/ selfish people sending kids into school when they are obviously unwell / contagious.

This is how viruses spread!

Cheesecake53 · 11/09/2020 09:27

I'd keep him off, too.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 10:45

@Mrsbclinton I agree but once got snotty letter off school because i kept mine off for 48 hrs after a sickness bug twice in one year

I’ve had those snotty letters too. I don’t care. If I feel my child is too ill for school he doesn’t go.

I don’t send them with colds when they’re at their worst - both of mine have had hospital visits when a ‘cold’ turned nasty.

Mrsbclinton · 11/09/2020 11:12

@Notfeelinggreattoday thats crazy, if a child is sick they need to stay at home.

Im in ROI & if the child misses more than 20 days they are automatically referred to the governing body.

Two of my kids missed 7 consecutive days earlier this year when they both came down with a viral illness. There was no way they could have gone to school high temperatures, completely fatigued, even though it was a complete nightmare with work etc.

kidsdrivingmemad · 11/09/2020 11:13

Honestly keeping a child off because of a common cold. Do you know how many times kids get colds in a year.

It is not a persistent cough and school have no concerns about it being just a cold. If he had a temperature too or felt unwell he wouldn't of stayed at home.

Life has to get back to normal for the kids and keeping a teen off because he had a sneezing fit come on people.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 11:17

@kidsdrivingmemad he is constantly sneezing at the moment like 9/10 times every hour
Would you honestly feel comfortable i he was sat next to your child in the classroom, sneezing all day

OP posts:
LizzieMacQueen · 11/09/2020 11:21

It wouldn't be nice to be sneezing whilst wearing a face mask tbh.

But it's classic dust allergy. Waking with a stuffy nose. Multiple sneezing fits. Use his day off school to get him to dust & hoover his room. Wash bed sheets and take an anti histamine.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 11:22

@kidsdrivingmemad its not just a persistent cough though is it , the guidelines also state a cough if so many times in 24 hrs
In my son's case school agreed due to the constant sneezing to keep him off for today , if no other symptoms develop he will be in monday
And a lot of schools will not allowed a child in who is coughing at the moment without a negative test so your lucky your school is
Besides with him sneezing he will be spreading germs around so i am sure his teachers are glad I am not sending him in to give them a cold at the moment

OP posts:
Lockdownseperation · 11/09/2020 11:24

I would send him in. He is in year 10 and goodness knows how much of GCSE teaching he is going to miss over the next two years.

If you are going to keep him off for a cold then I think you need to buy text books/revision guides for him and ask his teachers which topics he will be missing so he can attempt to keep up.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 11:25

@LizzieMacQueen room hoovered daily and dusted regularly , just inside of his pc he did last night as fiddly , didn't occur to me that this could be cause
Have given an anti hestimine and will do bedding and give mattress a hoover , will know if allergy or cold by this evening and he is going to contact his friends online later to tell him what he has missed so he can keep up
No face masks in school unless you want to either so Hardly anyone has one , although ds has one in his bag just incase

Not necessarily.

Also some children get colds frequently and they would be off school all the time.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 11:27

@Lockdownseperation he has all the revision guides and i agree i don't want him missing
But sitting in a classroom sneezing all day isn't great for him or others
I am not talking the odd sneeze , it is 7/8 times at least every hr with multiple sneezes so i cant see how he will get much done in that case and how distracting it would be for others

OP posts:
Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 11:29

@Lockdownseperation he is actually year 11 so even more concerning as gcse soon but he is good at catching up in his own time and did all his home learning whilSt off and in facthas been moved to top set going back for english

You did right, sneezing is awful for the person and those nearby. Then sneezing into a mask 🤮 the school probably would have sent him home anyway, lots of unpleasantries coming from the nose. As for pp sending coughing kid in, I fucking despair 😠🙄
