Keeping son off school

Ds 15 ,has woken up with a stuffy nose this morning and sneezing a lot, i have decided to keep him off school due to the sneezing mostly
Do you think that is the right thing to do at the moment ?
No covid symptoms from the three to isolate but will keep eye on temp all day etc
He does sometimes get some allergies so could even be that , but friend thinks I am crazy keeping him off
I spoke to school who are fine with it and agree if he is sneezing won't be comfortable for him in classroom either
What would you do ?

@Lipz yes even a cold cough at moment i wouldn't send in for , i recently swallowed wrong way and coughed whist out into my shoulder and i had a mask and the looks some gave me !
I thought if dc went in constantly sneezing he would be distracting to others as everyone is a lot more anxious etc and I am sure the teachers don't want a cold either or be calling me to say they are sending him home

It's hard, there are lots of head colds around at the moment, with a runny nose and bunged up but without a persistant cough or the loss of taste/smell I'd say it's a cold and if the school are fine with that I'd let them go.

I don't think it will be good for immune systems if we isolate ourselves for a common cold

Sewrainbow · 11/09/2020 12:00

Well mines off today for the same, I'd rather he wasn't, what with being at a new school and only back a week and I had a load of plans today that now will not happen.

The worry is if it develops into more covid like symptoms then he potentially spread it through coughing and sneezing today, as it is I'm worrying about us all having to potentially self isolate next week and get tested and dh and I are key workers and i have important meetings at the 3nd of next week...

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 12:04

@lifesalongsong kept him off due to his constant sneezing if just stuffed nose I would of sent in and just advised more hand washing etc , although he said they have to use hand gel upon entering and exiting classrooms so school has that well covered it seems
Hopefully the sneezing subsides and he's all good to go back in monday

Allergies for dustmites are bad at the moment. Give him an antihistamine and send him to school.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 12:08

@Sewrainbow yes this made me think how hard it will be having to isolate if he developed further symptoms or a cough etc as I was made redundant back in April and struggled to find anything and finally may have an interview next week !!
I foresee this though as ds often develops a cough with a cold or due to an allergy and this will require a test etc as there is no way i can prove its only a allergy cough without a test , if i sent him in coughing they would be calling me right away , going to be a long autumn/ winter.

Mine are in primary but the new official advice from the school yesterday was keep them home for 48 hours with any symptom of anything basically.

England.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 12:11

@dontdisturbmenow have done and will see if sneezing subsides as then likely to be allergy as to a cold but he finishes school at 2:40 anyway and nearly lunchtime with just one lesson left after so pointless for today .

Most kids I know have already got colds since going back. A schools round here have said fine to go in unless temp/new cough/loss taste and smell as per government guidelines (obviously also if unwell e.g sickness bug)

FelicityBob · 11/09/2020 12:22

I’d send him in. Sneezing isn’t a reason to keep a child home from school. Our school send guidance yesterday saying it’s fine to send them in with cold symptoms, other than cough or temp

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 12:24

@PoodleMoth does make you wonder with all additional
Measures we have that colds are still spreading , i have just spoke. To school again who agree that has he was sneezing so much keeping him off was probably best , assuming he develops no other symptoms and sneezing normally goes then he will return monday
I don't think anyone here would be happy if there dc came home and said they had sat next to someone who was sneezing all day , just a snuffy nose and he would of gone in

@FelicityBob yes maybe but would you really be happy if your dc came home and said they were sat next to a child who was sneezing all day
He was sneeZing a lot 7/8 times an hour , multiple sneezes every time
I spoke to school and because of sneezing agreed to take today off
Its seems lots of schools have different policys , school shut nearby and child didn't have any symptoms so its going to be so hard to keep out of schools
