To ask if you've been to Boston?

Have you visited Boston, and if so would you recommend it?

Could you spend a couple of weeks holiday there?

Is there anything nearby worth seeing (neighbouring cities, etc.)?

USA or Lincolnshire?

CMOTDibbler · 10/09/2020 15:05

Boston, US? Yes, I've been quite a few times and like it. A week would be enough though, so I'd take the train to Washington and spend another week there. I am a big fan of museums though, so what I like might not be the same

Chottie · 10/09/2020 15:06

Yes, we spent a few days in Boston. It is a beautiful city, we enjoyed the walking trail which goes through the city and takes you to all the important buildings and areas connected with the history of Boston. The older parts are beautiful with individual, historic homes. The food was good and it is a very easy place to find your way around.

Olaplex · 10/09/2020 15:07

US! Grin

I spent 5 nights there and felt I’d seen most things. It was a great holiday. Great food, and a lovely place to walk around.

You could also go to Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

ScribblyGum · 10/09/2020 15:08

We want a few years back and really enjoyed ourselves. The historical walking tour is great as is the science museum.
We stayed three nights and really packed it in.
In a Boston I had my first deep fried macaroni cheese patty within a beef burger [fond memories].

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 10/09/2020 15:09

I have only spent one afternoon in Boston. We were staying on Cape Cod, and thought we'd end up travelling back to Boston to do stuff, particularly if the weather was bad. However we had glorious sun so spent all our time on the beach or in boats. The Cape is an easy drive (or ferry) from Boston except for the rubbish traffic on Saturdays (holiday rental changeover).

you could even nip down to NYC for an overnight. We got the train from Penn Station to Providence RI and I think it was £100 for four of us, and took about 3.5hours, so maybe 4 to Boston.

ScribblyGum · 10/09/2020 15:10

The airport iirc was about a billion times nicer then JFK as well (we flew into NY and out of Boston).

Leeds2 · 10/09/2020 15:10

I love Boston, but two weeks just in the city would probably be too. much.
If you are going at Halloween, Salem is nearby and might fun. I have never done this myself though, so can't recommend!

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/09/2020 15:12

I love Boston! Would happily live there.

Agree with the person who mentioned Cape Cod as well, I haven't been there yet but it's on my list. You could have a great holiday combining there with Boston.

Olaplex · 10/09/2020 15:13

There's a tour on next year and the artist is playing all over – Madison Square Gardens, NY, is the other main venue I'm looking at..

there's also dates in California (Sacramento, Inglewood), Tulsa, Pittsburgh, Florida (Tampa, Orlando, Sunrise), Wichita, Lincoln (NE), Des Moines, Milwaukee.

Would consider California from those too, at the moment mostly looking at NY and Boston.

Don't know much about Boston and never been there!

Absolutely love Boston and it's one of the few places in the US I'd consider living. Very interesting history and culture, welcoming people, close to great countryside and easy access to loads of other cities. We did 4/5 days there and would go back but 2 weeks solidly in Boston is possibly overkill.

PachinkoFreeFood · 10/09/2020 15:14

Ooo I lived there for 13 months and love it there! I lived in Framingham just outside.

DontBelongHere · 10/09/2020 15:14

It's also a relatively short and easy flight from the UK compared to California.

pallisers · 10/09/2020 15:15

I live there!

Lovely city to visit. Children's Museum, Science Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, freedom trail, black freedom trail, Duck boat tours, swan boats in the public gardens in season, Paul Reveres house, chinatown, North End (Italian part), seafront, whale watching tours, the aquarium, Faneiul Hall, Charles River esplanade, Harvard Square etc. It is steeped in history and is a lovely city to walk in. You are an hour or so from Cape Cod and there is a high speed ferry to Provincetown which is lovely. North of the city are some lovely towns like Rockport, Marblehead etc.

Newport RI is also relatively close and is lovely - you can do tours of the mansions and the cliff walk.

Of course all of this is supposing no covid.

Bumble84 · 10/09/2020 15:16

I loved Boston! I would say 2 weeks is too much though. I went NYC, Philly, DC and Boston in one trip, definitely doable. But if you want to focus on Boston area, I spent 4 nights in Boston then hired a car and travelled up north out of the city, there’s lots of amazing walks and if you hit it in autumn the colours will be amazing.

Olaplex · 10/09/2020 15:16

These are some great tips, thank you!

Especially great to hear that NYC, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, etc. are all nearby! Could be worth travelling around and exploring a bit :)

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 10/09/2020 15:16

we flew into NYC, out of Boston, and went to RI and the Cape in between. Would totally recommend.

hammeringinmyhead · 10/09/2020 15:17

It's lovely, but not big. 4 nights was enough.

Olaplex · 10/09/2020 15:17

Such a good point @DontBelongHere!!

Olaplex · 10/09/2020 15:18

Ooh Philly and DC would also be great to visit :)

MyDucksArentInARow · 10/09/2020 15:18

Boston is great! Especially if you're interested in the war of independence, science and art. Cape cod is a drive away (though it's deserted in the off season) and you can nip up to new Hampshire for tax free shoping.

Olaplex · 10/09/2020 15:18

I'm getting the sense that 2 weeks just in Boston for hols would be overkill Grin

utterlynutty · 10/09/2020 15:18

We were booked to fly to Boston at the end of this month. Were so looking forward to it and having a bit of a road trip taking in Maine,New Hampshire,Vermont and Cape Cod.However due to Covid 19 our flights have been cancelled .Fingers crossed we can go another time.

Metothee · 10/09/2020 15:19

I also loved it and would happily live there. As a holiday destination two weeks would be too long just in the city though. After four days in the city we rented a car and drove up to New Hampshire for a few nights and then back to Boston via a stay in cape cod. It was a fab trip.
