School run and mask wearing

kerrymucklowe2020 · 09/09/2020 10:18

1st day back at school and forgot to take my mask! No other parents I saw were wearing them. Will take mine at pick up and from now on every time I do school run. But I can't understand why so many parents are not SD and I didn't see anyone wearing a mask. ( BTW it's Primary so children dont HAVE to wear one). Are parents wearing them at your schools?

We've been asked to wear them at drop off and pick up but school has also said they won't be able to enforce it. This morning there was me wearing one and maybe 3 other parents. There's no social distancing going on.

Pinksands1 · 09/09/2020 14:19

We have been told we have to wear them at our primary school or not allowed on the premises. They say this is because people are not social distancing. It's a bit difficult to social distance though even with the staggered starts etc. It doesnt seem to have changed the amount of people around.

EatDessertFirst · 09/09/2020 14:25

Not wearing a mask on schools runs as its outside all the way, but I do keep my distance, to the point where I will walk half way across the playground to find a space and avoid the crush of idiots who congregate around the exit. Oh, and I have to walk in the road to avoid the parents chatting across the narrow pavements. The same parents were agonising only a couple of weeks ago about sending little Timmy back to school and lambasting the school on their facebook page about the lack of SD at the first drop off.

WeirdlyOdd · 09/09/2020 14:28

I'm wearing mine. SD isn't possible, though they've staggered the starts, that just means the first crowd end up in a face to face crush with the second crowd etc. There's no queuing, just a crush of people... and now the head has decided to run parent meetings in the hall as well.

Just thought I'd put a link here to when you are expected to wear a mask.

You don't have to wear one outside. If you feel you want to then thats up to you. You don't have the right to judge other people for not wearing one when it isn't required.

randomsabreuse · 09/09/2020 14:38

Don't know how you'd keep a mask dry enough to be useful on most of my school runs - the number of torrential downpours at 2.50pm on otherwise dry days is starting to get annoying!

LittleRen · 09/09/2020 14:40

I am going to start, our playground is chaos and parents are not social distancing. Just because it’s outside doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Alloftheboys · 09/09/2020 14:48

No SD in playground. Have to walk between infant and junior site on narrow pavements. I’m wearing a mask now infants have asked us to.

tiredanddangerous · 09/09/2020 14:50

No one is wearing them at our primary.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 09/09/2020 15:02

Yes, pretty much everyone is wearing a mask. We have a new speedy drop-off system, but those walking pretty much all wear masks, and those picking up, the same. I think this morning I saw 2 people without masks at drop-off, and none at all at pickup.

Also primary, but I'd say maybe 1 in 10 kids wears a mask too - not during the day, but at pickup/drop off.

Pumpkinnose · 09/09/2020 15:05

Very sensible head teachers at our schools. Asked parents/carers to wear masks. I’m happy to wear them in a shop, why not in a playground where 2m distancing is inevitably breached?

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 09/09/2020 15:33

Not at our school as it’s outside queuing.

I did put mine on the other day when a man was stood right behind me in the queue to pick up.

It’s not great for kids to be met with parents all in masks though - thinking of “Greet your child with a smile”!

LittleRen · 09/09/2020 16:30

We have just been asked to wear masks and pickups have been spaced further. Very pleased.

Ilovewillow · 09/09/2020 16:35

Maybe 10 or so at our junior school which has approx 360 pupils but we have staggered drop off/pick up so only 120 at a time and only 30 at each entrance with plenty of space for SD.

CantSayJack · 18/09/2020 22:25

Barely anyone at our Primary school is but most are not SD, with crowded areas at drop-off and pick-up and parents congregating in groups after to chat. I am seriously considering wearing one now, pointless saying you don’t need one outside, you do if people are stood right next to you 😳

Generallybewildered · 18/09/2020 22:54

We’re all wearing them at my son’s primary school (bar 1 or 2 who may have reasons). And we’re not on school premises and most of us are socially distancing.
Why wouldn’t you?

ShipshapeShore · 18/09/2020 23:03

Schools in my area (Leicestershire) have been advised to request face coverings by the local authority (I think it's the LA). It's not enforceable but the vast majority are wearing face coverings. I don't mind, it's a big school and very busy. Only a couple of people were before the request went out though.

Bupkis · 18/09/2020 23:06

I'm wearing one in the hope it encourages other parents to...especially after hearing a parent say that they had symptoms, but couldn't get a test, so 'what could they do?'..as they picked their child up.

Ding123 · 18/09/2020 23:25

My DC primary has been sending out text messages almost daily pleading with parents to wear masks and stand 2m apart. I'd say only about a third of parents have bothered. I wear a mask at both drop off and pick up (heavily pregnant so don't want to risk it), despite it being hard to breathe.

No SD in the playground despite staggered finishing times - many parents have children in multiple year groups so have no choice but to wait but they stand in groups of two or more chatting. One year group was sent home last week due to a child being positive so you'd think people would be more careful.

Fcuk38 · 18/09/2020 23:34

To be clear this isn’t the poster doing this of her own accord - parents were told that Public health recommend wearing masks at school pick up/
Drop off.
I’m not wearing one as we have 4 entrances for different years and they are all staggered.
I only really talk to one other family but keep
Myself to myself really and can easily socially distance.
Plus you don’t need to wear a mask walking down a street so don’t see why you have to in this situation. Plus I don’t go into school property so it’s highly unenforceable it’s merely a recommendation.

Having said that the majority of people at our school do, like sheep just doing what they have been told.

Rockbird · 19/09/2020 00:04

Everyone wears them at my DD's school. We've been asked to wear them on school grounds and there is zero SD due to the configuration of the classrooms.

The school I work at hasn't mentioned them and very few parents do.

Rockbird · 19/09/2020 00:05

Also, I really fucking hate people who play the sheep card. It's so juvenile and unimaginative and instantly shows that person up to be a twat.

catsarecute · 19/09/2020 00:15

In Liverpool, parents have been asked to wear a mask at school pick up and drop off. I think it's a good idea. If you don't object to wearing a mask, or don't have any underlying conditions that make it difficult, it's well worth considering. We're clearly in a difficult situation at the moment with cases on the rise, every little helps. Ultimately, if we can control the spread it will make things better for all of us.

MinaMurray · 19/09/2020 00:25

My DCs school has asked parents / carers to wear masks when on the school grounds for pick up and drop off.

Most people are wearing them. I don’t agree that that makes us “sheep.” It’s difficult to maintain a 2m distance given the space available and the numbers of people around, and if it helps reduce transmission even a little bit, then what’s the problem with wearing a mask for 5 or 10 minutes if you can wear a mask?

SpecialWGM · 19/09/2020 00:42

@Florencex

You don’t need to wear a mask outside.
Um yes you do
