School run and mask wearing

kerrymucklowe2020 · 09/09/2020 10:18

1st day back at school and forgot to take my mask! No other parents I saw were wearing them. Will take mine at pick up and from now on every time I do school run. But I can't understand why so many parents are not SD and I didn't see anyone wearing a mask. ( BTW it's Primary so children dont HAVE to wear one). Are parents wearing them at your schools?

Why would people be wearing masks on the school run?
It’s outside? Our school haven’t asked us to
I do SD of course

Sirzy · 09/09/2020 10:49

I am the only parent going on site so I wear a mask. Very few others seem to and I don’t think I would now they have the system in place to keep things flowing and distanced

walfordwatcher · 09/09/2020 10:49

I am the only one wearing one...and as my husband is in the clinically extremely vulnerable group I am completely terrified that no one else is taking it seriously and also not keeping any social distance. I am collecting foster children and had they been ours I would be home schooling for this fact alone.

SendHelp30 · 09/09/2020 10:50

None of the parents at DS Primary do and I certainly won’t be doing either

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 09/09/2020 10:51

@kerrymucklowe2020

*You don't need to wear one outside. YABU*

Only if SD is observed. Which it's not

Then wear one. Others will either wear one or not. Your chances of contracting covid19 from anyone outside are quite slim, but suit yourself. You do you and others will do them.
kerrymucklowe2020 · 09/09/2020 10:51

**
We have to, primary but parents are required to where on the premises (inside and out) and encouraged to outside the gates due to congestion.**

This is sensible. People are not SD and congregating at the outside classroom door.

Maybe the other parents forgot them like you 😳

aintnothinbutagstring · 09/09/2020 10:53

We've been told to wear one around the school. Otherwise the head will ask you to. I don't mind as I'm used to wearing one for work and I've been out shopping quite a bit so it's normal for me now.

EllieQ · 09/09/2020 10:53

We’ve been asked to wear them on the playground, as it’s busy even with staggered drop-offs and hard to keep to 2m social distancing. I’m ok with it - I really want school to stay open and if masks help, that’s fine.

edwinbear · 09/09/2020 10:54

The children of those families are at school all day with your DC. Wearing a mask for the school run (and remember you need to be in close contact with that person for >15 mins), is not going to make any difference as to whether one household spreads it to another. Not one parent is wearing for drop off/pick up at DC's school.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 09/09/2020 10:57

Nope. But then there are maybe only 30 parents, and staggered starts. As we have a car park a lot of parents of older kids don't even walk to gate, just watch their kids cross car park then leave.

aintnothinbutagstring · 09/09/2020 10:57

I think scientists are still unsure how transmission works in children, if indeed young children are spreading it at all. So I'd say adults are most risk to each other.

Ponoka7 · 09/09/2020 11:00

I think it would be better to address the SD issue than force people to wear masks outdoors.

unmarkedbythat · 09/09/2020 11:08

DS3's primary school have asked parents to wear masks for drop off. Unless they are someone with a genuine reason not to be able to, I'd think anyone refusing was an utter cock. I want the staff at the dc's schools to feel safe and supported in the incredibly important job they are doing, if they need us to wear masks for that then we will do that.

SomewhereEast · 09/09/2020 11:21

No & No. The risk outdoors is absolutely miniscule, which is why UK infection rates kept falling steadily in the late spring & early summer despite all those protests / packed beaches / crowded parks which were allegedly going to unleash The Second Wave. Prolonged close proximity in enclosed spaces is the biggie.

movingonup20 · 09/09/2020 11:54

If you are outside why would you be wearing one? Just keep distanced yourself and don't fret about others. They could have had covid and have had antibody tests for all you know. I'm not worrying too much because we have both had it

SamsMumsCateracts · 09/09/2020 12:12

I wish parents would wear them at our primary. There is zero social distancing happening and due to the lack of space at the front of the school, huge crowds of parents are gathering to pick up. They've staggered start times into two groups 15 minutes apart, but most have children in both groups, so everyone ends up congregated together until they can pick their other child up. It's chaos. The only way back out, is to fight your way through the crowd to the exit. I had one woman coming the opposite direction to me cough right in my face yesterday. So far only myself and about three other parents have been wearing masks, out of around 400.

Castiel07 · 09/09/2020 12:15

We have been asked to wear a mask in the school playground, and children in Yr 1 and up also.

REDLIPSTICKANDNAILS · 09/09/2020 12:15

No they are not wearing them.

bonbonours · 09/09/2020 12:19

I generally don't wear one outside and that includes the school run. Hardly any parents do at our school.

Mintjulia · 09/09/2020 12:20

Parents at our school (junior & senior on same site) are asked not to get out of their cars so no masks needed. Classes are finishing at five minute intervals so kids can disperse in the car park safely. Parents on foot are wearing masks or being offered a free mask if they show up without one.

Kids getting school buses are wearing masks too. It's working well so far but it's only day 5. Smile

DappledThings · 09/09/2020 12:22

Not seen anyone wearing one at my school. Don't think it would cross anyone's mind to do so outside.

Soubriquet · 09/09/2020 12:23

I’ve only seen one person wearing a mask in the entire school.

Di11y · 09/09/2020 12:45

We've got complicated one way systems in place, staggered starts and lines on the playground so social distancing should be fine so no masks here.

AriettyHomily · 09/09/2020 12:47

No sign of masks at ours, lots of teachers in hi vis.
