Girls' clothes: AIBU?

These images are from a local 'boutique' AIBU to think:
a) Most importantly, they hinder movement and play.
b) They promote girls as dolls to be dressed up and looked at as an accessory to the parent.
c) They buy into quite dangerous societal stereotypes.
d) Some of them tap too far into the 'bordello' image of women with the 'socks' looking like stockings with short skirts, which is totally inappropriate for children.

YABU- They're clothes and personal choice calm down.

YANBU- This look is concerning in some of the above ways.

YANBU because even setting all the reason you've given aside ( which are all valid), the whole outfit is just hideous regardless and I'm wondering who would ever dress their dd like that ?

Puffalicious · 08/09/2020 21:44

I didn't want to judge but I also think they're hideous! The website is very popular and the clothes are super expensive!

They also don’t look very nice! But that bit is just my opinion.

For all the reasons you’ve said, yanbu.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 08/09/2020 21:46

It looks like something a kid would wear to a wedding or party or something rather than every day wear.

I don't think they are very nice but I couldn't get offended about them.

Puffalicious · 08/09/2020 21:47

Thanks Stanis, love the name!

Puffalicious · 08/09/2020 21:48

I wouldn't say I'm offended, just concerned.

Probably stereotyping here but aren’t these clothes popular with the traveller community? But no they don’t look very comfortable and I wouldn’t dress my children in them.

MaskingForIt · 08/09/2020 21:49

It looks like something a kid would wear to a wedding or party or something rather than every day wear.

I’m not sure children should be at the kind of party where this style of attire would be appropriate!

puppygalore · 08/09/2020 21:49

I definitely thought 'Moulin Rouge' when I saw the pics, and that's not something you really want associated with kids!

CatsFantastic · 08/09/2020 21:50

I agree with everything you’ve said !

It’s teaching girls from birth that their value is
in how they look. I honestly wonder how fashion has become so stereotyped and sexist recently.

YorkshirePud1 · 08/09/2020 21:50

They're horrible... and I think they have a sort of weird lingerie dress-up feel about them. Not something I'd ever dress a little girl in.

RedPandaFluff · 08/09/2020 21:50

Oh these are awful . . . and yes, I also think they're a bit inappropriate; almost a parody of stockings.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 08/09/2020 21:51

Yep. It's dress DD as a Victorian dolly day.
Hideous.

Puffalicious · 08/09/2020 21:51

I suppose I didn't think about the traveller community, this shop is near a large city and many of their images are of customers modelling their new outfits and they seem to come from a wide variety of families.

JalapenoDave · 08/09/2020 21:52

YANBU but not for the reasons you've listed (although the first outfit does kinda resemble a child's version of the Japanese Lolita fashion). I generally don't find these outfits very tasteful...they're a bit naff looking arent they.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/09/2020 21:53

YANBU. Distasteful.

Victorian dolly/ Moulin Rouge- yes!!! Cats you've expressed exactly how I feel: it shows girls it's about how they look.

DeliciouslyFemale · 08/09/2020 21:58

Yuck. Even the way the children are posed, is creepy.

Puffalicious · 08/09/2020 22:00

Yes the posing is suggestive, at times.

I'm going to go against the grain and say it depends on the age of the child! A baby in knee high socks with pom poms is adorable, a 3 year old is too much.
But I did dress my DS in Spanish style knee high pom pom socks when he was 5/6 months for a couple of occasions where he could get dressed up Blush

Puffalicious · 08/09/2020 22:47

Bump some of the kids look up to age 6/7. These huge bows must, even for a baby, must get in the way?

Eatyourbanana · 08/09/2020 23:43

YANBU, makes me really uncomfortable actually. Much like you OP, I’m not offended more concerned. They don’t look comfortable or appropriate.

Lucindainthesky · 08/09/2020 23:51

Yanbu. They're grim.

fargo123 · 08/09/2020 23:55

Utterly ugly!
