To feel in despair for the kids

My son was one of 400 children sent home from two bubbles in his high school today to isolate for 14 days. He's in Year 7 and it was his fourth day in his new school.
He'd been catching the bus, made a new friend, had settled in so much better than I hoped after the past few chaotic disrupted months. And now he's home again.
Not only that, he is now going to miss his cricket presentation and first two football matches of the season, not be able to see friends and family, all for the pleasure of three days of schooling.
And I can see this happening over and over and over again. Luckily childcare isnt an issue as I work from home, but I'm just so sad for kids missing out. Six months off and it seems we're back where we started with no end in sight

This is just a f*cking nightmare.
My frees are disappearing into duties to cover the eleventy billion breaks and lunches.

There's testing of the lockdown learning. I now have x7 sets of tests to mark. And everything else to do. With less free time.

I think I have a cold brewing. Son started it on Friday (slight sore throat then snot. No temperature) and by Monday clear nothing suspicious.

My anxiety is high as cases going up where we are and there's just no real distancing going on at school. We had no training on what to do/not to do at inset and it's just "business as usual" or it feels like it.

I hate it right now.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/09/2020 20:29

This is how a teacher feels.

I'm scared.

I feel overwhelmed.

My daily work life is frankly, madness.

HesterShaw1 · 08/09/2020 20:29

@Witchcraftandhokum

HesterShaw my parents and my grandmother have voted Labour their whole life, they voted remain. My mother worked as a nurse her entire career, my grandmother worked in a children's mental health facility caring for children who had been abandoned by their parents (oh and she just had her free TV license taken away) so don't fucking tell me the don't care about the younger generation.

And, even if this wasn't the case who the fuck are you to say that people who have different ideas to you should be locked away?

Erm...not sure I actually said "people who have different ideas to me should be locked away." Nope, just checked 🙄

Nor was I talking about your parents and grandparents.

FFS why do people on MN find it so impossible to believe a post is talking generally rather than referring to them personally?

plmqaz · 08/09/2020 20:29

Transport by full double decker buses (approx 90 kids) and "bubble" of 330 in year group.... I feel it's inevitable my child will be asked to isolate before half term.

MarshaBradyo · 08/09/2020 20:30

Hester the emphasis on equally rather than how stuffed. All the strategies to this point will not make much difference if there’s no vaccine.

If that is to a lesser amount then that’s the same for everyone.

pasteldechocolateconchispa · 08/09/2020 20:30

@AlexaShutUp

Has it not occurred to you that the vulnerable include school children and their parents?

And teachers! Learning support staff. School office staff. Lunchtime assistants etc.

@AlexaShutUp thank you for mentioning all the other school staff. We don’t often get a mention
Oaktree55 · 08/09/2020 20:30

@GuyFawkesDay ah but you see it’s all fine because the masses dictate it should be! I’m sorry, I and a few others get it. It’s impossible, you’ve been set an impossible goal by an incompetent Government, setting you up as fall guys as we have such a naive general public!

stairway · 08/09/2020 20:31

Blended learning would have been kids in school for 2 days a week and then they would have 3 days of doing almost nothing at home. Even if a child misses a few weeks of school self isolating it has to be better then the blended learning alternative. My children have all had a week of school now, with blended leaning they would only have had 2 days by now.

HesterShaw1 · 08/09/2020 20:31
@HesterShaw1have you looked at the typical timeframe for viruses losing virulence?
Two years (ish) for Spanish flu wasn't it?

And an awful lot of doctors who have treated people through this pandemic are saying it is happening already.

Witchcraftandhokum · 08/09/2020 20:35

*Erm...not sure I actually said "people who have different ideas to me should be locked away." Nope, just checked 🙄

Err, yes you did. You generalised whole generations which my parents and grandparents are part of. And you used the examples of the way people vote as a reason that they should be locked away. Your views are repulsive. We could use this time to teach kids to have someempathy and gratitude for older generations, but clearly in your case somebody else would have to do it.

Oaktree55 · 08/09/2020 20:37

@HesterShaw1 no it’s 10 years at a better estimate. Just use your brain. Those “dr’s” that are suggesting otherwise Prof. Sikora by any chance? are charlatans. The death rate is low because infections are in the young at present. Give it 5/6 weeks. We follow France. No we’re not all magically immune look at South America where it’s been proven antibodies detected in 70% hard hit areas.

Any other magical thinking anyone???

FedUpWithCovid · 08/09/2020 20:40

Completely agree. We all just need to return to normal work, school, activities and accept some Covid morbidity.

How can people work with kids constantly sent home......???

Oaktree55 · 08/09/2020 20:41

@FedUpWithCovid. You’re going to be fed up a v long time I’m afraid!!

XingMing · 08/09/2020 20:45

Re-infection is going to be an issue. And a vaccine is still some way away. So you, and I, and we all need to consider our own safeguards to avoid contracting COVID. But I do have a problem with your obvious antipathy towards anyone older than you. I voted Brexit after asking my DS, who was 18 days short of having his own vote, how he wanted me to vote. And I agree, the triple lock should go, but given that we have the one of the least generous pension schemes in Europe and among the highest qualifying ages to receive it, I believe it ought to increase in line with at least two of the benchmarks... RPI, average earnings, or cost of living. Our pensioner population is generally living in straitened circumstances. If you are in social housing and don't have a social care support network or a loving family nearby, then you will often be so cold that you need to get into bed to stay warm in the evening. My DM's quality of life is much improved by receiving pension credit, which puts her in the poorest 20% of pensioners because she's a divorced widow. She worked in mental heath care until she was 79 years old. So please don't tell me that today's children have a tough life. I know many do, but their parents are the ones that should not have had children, or at least not until they were more responsible.

Witchcraftandhokum · 08/09/2020 20:47

Any other magical thinking anyone???

With all these kids showing sptoms and schools closing the well-versed "kids either don't get it or remain asymptomatic" springs to mind.

Oaktree55 · 08/09/2020 20:48

What I’ve found most disturbing about this pandemic is the number of sociopaths amongst us who demand their normal at the expense of others lives. I now understand how the atrocities of history started.

MarshaBradyo · 08/09/2020 20:51

I definitely don’t want normal but I’m very glad children are now on the agenda when discussing what is important.

BeijingBikini · 08/09/2020 20:51

The main symptom is not no symptoms

Yes it is, over 50% are asymptomatic.

MarshaBradyo · 08/09/2020 20:52

I can see how easy it is for a group with no voice to get looked over. When Whitty et al started talking about it, I thought finally.

Witchcraftandhokum · 08/09/2020 20:53

What I’ve found most disturbing about this pandemic is the number of sociopaths amongst us who demand their normal at the expense of others lives. I now understand how the atrocities of history started.

Absolutely this. And the alarming lack of critical thinking. Those who demanded teachers put the self at risk for the good of the kids, then complain when schools need to close because staff are sick.

Codexdivinchi · 08/09/2020 20:53

@BeijingBikini

It’s 80% asymptotic or mild - which could be a runny nose.
cardibach · 08/09/2020 20:57

@HesterShaw1 the triple lock for pension is a good thing. I’ve supported that for ages and I’m not retired yet. Nice that you want pensions to be at the whim of government after people have worked all their lives...
Plus what @Witchcraftandhokum said.

Oaktree55 · 08/09/2020 20:57

@MarshaBradyo but surely that involves prioritising? If we truly all believe in education then let’s get the exam years back into uninterrupted schooling. As you know from another thread I am temporarily homeschooling. I could not competently do this if mine had public exams next summer. I (and many others) would gladly homeschool to allow a more uninterrupted education for those who need it more. Our Government has allowed little flexibility.

I take umbrage at those who purport to support education on here yet actually just want childcare. Most will catch up. Where is the Societal responsibility in a crisis?

YewHedge · 08/09/2020 20:58

** 'Completely agree. We all just need to return to normal work, school, activities and accept some Covid morbidity.

That "COVID morbidity" you mention. That is real people's lives. Actual people who you think should die so others don't have to juggle working with kids at home. You think people should die to facilitate you being able to carry on with your activities?
You actually think it's better for people to DIE? Death is it. The end. You can recover finances, education etc but you cannot recover from DEATH.
You and your family may personally be at low risk but millions of others aren't. Being older or having underlying health conditions doesn't mean your life is not important.

cardibach · 08/09/2020 20:58

@BeijingBikini

How do we know that? We have had very poor testing of people with and without symptoms throughout the height if the first wave. We have no idea. You may be right. We don’t know.
