Where's the best place to live in York?

Ideally walking distance to the centre, nice and quiet, big townhouse

Heworth - especially Stockton Lane area has some lovely houses. Also Tadcaster Road - some nice streets off there, and close to town/overlooking the knavesmire (racecourse)...

campas · 06/09/2020 14:31

Great, thank you! Will google

We just moved to Heworth a few days ago, it's really nice. Quiet but with a few shops and cafes. Good schools and a few mins on a bus into York bit you could easily walk or cycle.

South bank/bishopthorpe road area is lovely. Good schools close to town

I second this - I used to live in the Bishopthorpe Road/Nunnery Lane area and it was close to everything. Walking distance of the town centre, close to schools, Rowntrees Park, walks along the river etc. Loved it.
20wedding19 · 06/09/2020 15:13

Poppleton is great, just doesnt quite fit the criteria of walking distance to city centre but a lovely bike ride from the centre along the river x

JoJo10 · 06/09/2020 15:26

Holgate is a nice area, short walk to city centre, good schools, regular bus service. West Bank Park close by.

Quaagars · 06/09/2020 15:30

Fulford's great and within walking distance of the city centre

The3Ls · 06/09/2020 16:06

Acomb long walk but excellent transport links. Nice little high street. You ll get a lot more for your money and easy links to Leeds to. Keeps you out of a lot of the horrific York traffic and influx (in normal times) of tourists

campas · 06/09/2020 16:18

Is the traffic bad compared to London standard? I think we're pretty used to a bit of traffic!

Another vote for Bishopthorpe Road. We lived very happily there for ten years (only moved in order to get on the housing ladder) and would happily move back tomorrow if we could.

ClashCityRocker · 06/09/2020 16:24

But yes, South Bank, Heworth or Fulford would fit the bill nicely.

You would indeed get more for your money in Acomb, Rawcliffe, Clifton Moore but they are a bit further out and some parts are less salubrious than others. Although to be fair there's nowhere in York where you'd feel unsafe to live in... I say that as a Clifton lass!

Most of york is fairly walkable, imo. Traffic into city centre isn't great during rush hour, but we never drive in anyway.

20wedding19 · 06/09/2020 16:26

Definitely second Acomb close the small high Street (got everything you need) and if you really need/want walking distance I can appreciate Poppleton is a tiny bit too far. York traffic is not bad when you compare it to London no (I've lived in York and London) but its true, particularly on a Saturday there's a million tourists
Also depends what you are looking for in terms of schools (if applicable) Acomb and Poppleton are in a great catchment area for secondary education

If you're used to London traffic, York traffic will be a breeze lol
(Even though it does get busy at rush hour)

The3Ls · 08/09/2020 20:38

My views on traffic maybe a little over the top given my job is a community visiting health care professional. So I spend a lot of time in the car lol

user1471462428 · 08/09/2020 20:50

I like Acomb, I didn’t realise that people were snobby about it!!! Do you mean Chapelfields??
Anyway onto the question I personally would avoid Fulford ( the students and traffic). The Groves are lovely but again think about students. I would also be careful about Bishy road and south bank as there are subsidence issues in some of them. Tadcaster Road is lovely but I would steer clear of anywhere too close to the racecourse as there is antisocial behaviour on race days. Holgate is a real favourite of mine and will be my next move. Good luck

ClashCityRocker · 10/09/2020 14:16

I think a lot of people put acomb/foxwood/chappy together (incorrectly) but yes there's a definite snobbery about Acomb.

Same with clifton and Tang Hall.

Which is unfair as they are great places to live for the most part.

Harrogate

Harrogate
Love this..... Never knew there was snobbery about Acomb! My Mil sold her house there for 650k Confused. @campas do you have school age children as I think it will change the answers!
Quaagars · 10/09/2020 14:52

Harrogate

Confused

How is Harrogate in York, lol?
Never mind walking distance from city centre, Harrogate's miles away!

Unless you mean they're both in North Yorkshire which is a bloody big place Grin

catgirl1976 · 10/09/2020 14:58

Watching with interest as we are planning to move to York when Covid settles down. I went to uni there but it was so long ago. I hadn’t considered Holgate but now off to google

FrenchOrGreek · 10/09/2020 15:02

We live in Woodthorpe but York is egalitarian: in some cities you have super posh areas, shitholes, and everything in between. Not so in York, everywhere is pretty nice.

ClashCityRocker · 10/09/2020 15:14

Tbf there hasn't been any snobbery of acomb on this thread at all; just sensible replies suggesting, rightly so, that is a nice place to live. I admit I got so defensive about it on this thread before it actually became an issue 🤣

It's come up on previous threads where op has specifically asked about Acomb and you'd have thought that OP was considering moving to deepest Harlem circa 1982....

VinylDetective · 10/09/2020 15:20

I so envy anyone living York. The three years I spent there as a student were among the best of my life. Such a gorgeous city, I bet it’s particularly lovely now without tourists.
