Ideally walking distance to the centre, nice and quiet, big townhouse

York is not in North Yorkshire

Confused

Ookkay, if you're going to do the sarcasm/tongue in cheek thing you really need some emoticons as you're coming across as WTF lol

Quaagars · 10/09/2020 21:54

Much nicer
Lots of big town houses in walking distance to town
Better schools overall

She said she wanted to move to York though.

Needallthesleep · 10/09/2020 21:57

There’s a recent episode of Location Location Location that covers York close to the city centre that may help :)

EllieQ · 10/09/2020 21:59

Technically Polnm is correct, York is a unitary authority so isn’t part of North Yorkshire Smile

If you’re looking for lovely posh houses near the city centre, I’d suggest The Mount/ Tadcaster Road area, or Bootham. Heworth and the Bishopthorpe Road area are also nice. Fulford is lovely, but not really walking distance from the city centre! The Groves is quite mixed - some lovely houses, some studenty areas, some less nice areas.

You were the one who was rude when I made an alternative suggestion

Emoticons are not required by adults surely?

REDLIPSTICKANDNAILS · 10/09/2020 22:04

Fulford!

RunningNinja79 · 10/09/2020 22:16

I would personally walk from Huntington to York (I used to regulary walk from New Earswick), but I appreciate a lot of people would view it as too far. Then again in my teen years I walked to Dunnington once on a Saturday afternoon as we (me and a friend) just missed a bus.

Heworth is lovely. I used to live in Tang Hall for a bit and that was OK, but that depends on the street. Some streets are rougher than others.

Is Badger Hill too far?

MirandaWest · 10/09/2020 22:26

Fulford is perfectly easy to walk into York from - we’re just outside Fulford on the Naburn side and regularly walk in Grin

Hi there. I currently live in Dubai but grew up in York and am moving back in July 2021. I am a bit lost in terms of best state secondary schools and exact catchment areas. We will rent initially. I have looked at Millthorpe, Archbishop Holgates, Fulford and Huntington School but understand these may be hard to get a place in. My daughter will be starting in year 10 do GCSE year and I am very concerned about getting her into a good school. Please can anyone advise on schools plus specific areas/postcodes to look at to help guide me. Thanks.

Loughrigg77 · 02/12/2020 12:46

@Lkmasri there is a catchment area map on the York Council website:

www.york.gov.uk/SchoolCatchmentAreas

Fulford has recently been voted Comprehensive of the Decade, apparently. Archies and Huntington both have outstanding Ofsted ratings. Not sure about Millthorpe

JammyGem · 02/12/2020 12:52

Another vote for the Southbank and Bishopthorpe Road area - it's lovely, very close to the city, and great for kids.

Rainbowandscarlett · 02/12/2020 13:41

I was born in York-lovely places are south bank, bishy rd,holgate,Heworth, bootham and fulford
A little bit further out but walkable is dringhouses, acomb,Clifton, tang hall and chaplefields

Some people can be really snobby about the latter tho-we loved southbank and dringhouses

My son lives in heworth and loves it

Whatafustercluck · 02/12/2020 14:01

No real advice, just popped along to say you lucky bugger! I absolutely love York since spending my uni days there at the end of the 90s. Some really lovely parts.

Avoid Lawrence Street & Bull Lane though! Smile

DorisDances · 02/12/2020 15:19

Interesting comments about Acomb - I remember it had a seedy reputation in the 80's when i was a student in York. Had occasion to visit a school there recently and thought it was a lovely area!

DorisDances · 02/12/2020 15:19

PS Harrogate traffic is hideous...

CarrieBlue · 02/12/2020 15:24

York is predicted to have 28% unemployment levels, the main shopping street is derelict and it’s always been a low paid workforce. There’s a huge undercurrent of resentment towards incomers from the south paying ridiculous amounts for the very limited housing stock that is available.

Stick to Bishopthorpe Road/Southbank, you’ll feel at home there.

CarrieBlue · 02/12/2020 15:26

I bet it’s particularly lovely now without tourists.

It’s particularly frightening how little income is coming into the city.

Hoppinggreen · 02/12/2020 15:28

Harrogate
I used to live in York and loved it but now when I go it looks a bit run down and full of stag/hen do’s (Pre Covid). It’s always been touristy but there’s also been plenty of other things too but now it seems one big tourist trap . And what the F has Harry Potter got to do with York?

Buddytheelf85 · 02/12/2020 15:38

And what the F has Harry Potter got to do with York?

Very valid question! I looked this up once because I was baffled by all the HP tourism. People think the Shambles is Diagon Alley (it’s not as you know). The only real connection is that the bridge at York railway station features very, very briefly in the first film!

zigzagbetty · 02/12/2020 15:42

Just had a nose on rightmove and have fallen in love!

Apart from the flooding Shock

Buddytheelf85 · 02/12/2020 15:44

Anyway, I love York very much. Lived there when I was younger and it feels like home even now. Bishopthorpe Road, Tadcaster Road and Fulford are all lovely.

As with anywhere, York isn’t without its drawbacks, though. Bad traffic. The centre can get quite crowded and rough at weekends. Day trippers put a lot of strain on the infrastructure. Housing is very expensive compared to average local wages. A lot of the local economy is based on tourism and retail, so I suspect the city has suffered horribly this year - which is really sad.

user1471462428 · 02/12/2020 21:05

@zigzagbetty that house has been designed to allow for flooding. Tiled floors, and kitchen cabinets that withstand water. I know the owners and they’ve spent thousands on it

0gfhty · 02/12/2020 21:22

Fulford and bishopthorpe road area both nice with great quick river walks into town completely avoiding roads. Heworth is a bit further out and the walk into town isn't so nice - through busy roads and industrial type/big supermarket areas. You would get more for your money in heworth/Tang hall. Heworth is a bit of a warren of bungalows semi detached whereas Fulford/bishopthorpe road are old terraces and townhouses mostly. Bishopthorpe road is sort of trendy now.

chomalungma · 02/12/2020 21:30

Acomb High Street - what several bookies, a few charity shops and a few other shops?

York traffic is fine. Except when you get a crash on the ring road and it snarls up .Like this morning.

Or at rush hour.

It's been great in lock down traffic wise.

York has been hit by the pandemic - lots of shops are empty.

Fulford school has had great reviews - but I have heard from some people that it's not great for some pupils. Others thrive there though.

You can walk into town from a lot of places in York. And there are good bus links in as well.
