Revenge dinner!

Yarboosucks · 04/09/2020 19:25

I cook dinner every night. Never the same meal twice in a week, cook different world cuisines.

No one other than me likes meatloaf. I love it. I have made meatloaf tonight and there is an air of general disappointment in the house.

IABU to think, great all the more for me!! ?

Does anyone else cook revenge meals, if so what?

DH does this. But secretly I love the meals, I just claim not because they are very unhealthy (e.g. Buttermilk Fried chicken, bbq ribs, pork belly, toad in the hole)

Rossita · 04/09/2020 19:28

My best revenge dinner is to just not cook any.

FraughtwithGin · 04/09/2020 19:28

Just call it terrine chaude and pretend it is French ;-)

SideEyeing · 04/09/2020 19:29

I don't think this is a revenge thing, just the occasional perk of (always) being the cook. My DH doesn't like salmon. I cook it a couple of times a month because I love it, he'll eat it if there's nothing else and frankly if he didn't, despite his best hangdog expression he does in fact have hands and know where the oven is 😂

SideEyeing · 04/09/2020 19:29

@Rossita now THAT is a revenge dinner. One I've served a couple of times. Makes a statement.

NeutralJanet · 04/09/2020 19:30

I don't do revenge dinners but I do plate myself up the nicest looking bits and leave DH with the inferior ones if he has annoyed me.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/09/2020 19:30

Is that revenge? For what?

It sounds more like a cook's choice dinner, a 'got to be in it to win it' dinner.

(I need to understand the concept before answering).

frazzledasarock · 04/09/2020 19:31

I tend to meal plan and cook in our house. I cook more of what I enjoy. Nobody has yet dared to pull faces or complain they know full well I’d hand over the apron to them.

Perk of being the main cook, you get to choose what to make.

Yarboosucks · 04/09/2020 19:36

Not actually revenge for anything, I just call it that.

If I am out for actual revenge, I serve sweetcorn. If I am really cross and out for total revenge, I make sweetcorn chowder.

I love sweetcorn!

I tend to try and serve something that will make people feel happy and to ensure that there is a high point to the day.

Today, it is me that needs a pick up.

mbosnz · 04/09/2020 19:39

Funnily enough, mine is meatloaf, too. And sweet and sour pork.

honeygirlz · 04/09/2020 19:40

Why don't you get a break OP, where partner or children (if older) cook once or twice a week>? It doesn't seem fair to you. They'd appreciate your cooking more too.

ChangeThePassword · 04/09/2020 19:42

Imo yabu to think 'great all the more for me' because I'm with your family about meatloaf. Its not great.

But Yanbu to cook what you want to eat. They should be capable of doing the same.

Cooking someone a nice dinner is not revenge in my book

Revenge is buggering off to the pub and texting the husband and kids that they have to sort their own dinner. Sadly there’s hardly a thing in the fridge, the oven is off anyway (aga takes hours to crank up) and DH already had a few beers so he can’t drive to the shops, and you’re outside delivery areas for “just eat”

That was my revenge dinner last week Wink

They had some stale bread and cheese

Yarboosucks · 04/09/2020 19:47

DH works v hard, long hours in a very mentally demanding job. His cooking is awful - if you remember Butterflies, it is along those lines.

DS likes to cook, but the mess is overwhelming! He also likes everything to be "crispy". Most people would call it burnt....

I quite like cooking. So this is a light-hearted post really.

What's your meatloaf recipe? Haven't made one for ages, but my lot love it so it wouldn't be good revenge.

My revenge dinner (or rather, 'Fuck you, I cooked it ' dinner) would be anything with aubergine.

Thelittleweasel · 04/09/2020 19:59

@Yarboosucks

If I get something cooked for me then I always rave over it whether or not it would be my choice. Baked potato for example - not favourite.

Not having to cook justifies that

Yarboosucks · 04/09/2020 20:01

I base my meatloaf on this but without the ketchup and sugar. I use panko breadcrumps, I add chopped spinach and grated courgette, chilli, garlic and an indonesian chilli paste that I make.

Try this Marcella Hazan recipe next time. It is wonderful and can also be made with a mixture of minced beef and pork.
If your family don't like it they are savages and beyond redemption.

OhTheRoses · 04/09/2020 20:03

I love meatloaf! Can I come round please?

OhTheRoses · 04/09/2020 20:05

Our Swedish au-pairs used to make meatloaf. It was delish but needed a new dropping number of ingredients.

They also made a beef mince flan on a pastry base that was awesome and that I've never managed to replicate. Anyone got ideas. It was sooo delish.

Iammariedtojacksparrow · 04/09/2020 20:07

I love Curry, none of the rest of my family do. Once a month I make chicken in sauce. Everyone loves that

Graphista · 04/09/2020 20:09

Love it! Yes the best revenge dinner would be nothing but this has gotta be second best!

Dd left home last year, I’m veggie, she’s not but she is by far the fussier eater! SO. MANY. YEARS of missing out on my favourite foods and dishes or not eating them as often as I’d have liked because it was generally easier to cook/eat stuff we both liked...meaning mainly what she preferred!

She also had a couple of allergies (genuine allergies not dislikes) and while I never begrudged this it is lovely now to be able to buy and eat those foods again.

Enjoy op!

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 04/09/2020 20:11

Revenge dinner? That explains where that bag of small nails went. I thought they were salmon bones.
Well, my go now... 😇
