I volunteered to look after the neighbours cat while they were away. I don't know then well, but like animals and happy to help neighbours.

The keys were dropped through my letterbox in an envelope, with no instructions. I had to message to check where food was and how much to give. Place was less than pristine, and I had to clean maggots and litter tray (I didn't know this was an indoor cat). Visited 3 times a day to check on the cat, due to heat wave.

On their return, I didn't hear anything. I messaged to ask when they would like their keys back. They said they would collect at X time. No show. Finally knocked on door, to return keys.

I didn't do a favour to receive something back, but was surprised I didn't receive even a verbal thank you on return.

Utterly rude. We pay a neighbours teenager or if they do it we bring them chocolates and/or gifts from the holiday.

Make sure you don't do it again if they ask.
They didn't ask the first time. The OP stated they volunteered.

Don't do it again.
If they ask, tell them no.
I got someone I vaguely knew to look after my cat at home because I knew he would hate a cattery (he was old). They were happy to do it. I paid them £10 a day (for two visits a day) because that compensated their time, but I have to say it was much cheaper than a cattery - and he was outside so no litter trays to clean etc.
They really are CFs.

Beyond rude!
Ugh - gross, maggots.

Irresponsible pet owners to just assume you were available. The lack of thanks is appalling.

Thanks @PinkSparklyPussyCat!

I’ve just been away for 4 days & my lovely cat loving neighbour looks after my Princess! Who now sits on her doorstep & shouts for her to come & get her breakfast!! My neighbour also stays for half hour or so in the evening to play!
But I struggle to give her little gifts - she will not accept anything lol! I appreciate it so much & I just want to convey that. This week she asked me to get tickets online for an autumn fayre for her (outdoors COVID friendly etc) - not expensive, only £16 for 2 but I said I would only get them providing she didn’t pay me ha ha!
Save your good deed for someone who appreciates it.😀🐱

That's awful. We had friends, good friends, look after our pet for 10 days. They kindly sent a pic everyday (to keep my dd happy) and when we got home we texted the minute we got through the door to check when it was convenient to pick pet up. When we went round, we also took a food/drink hamper as a thank you gift (significantly cheaper than paying for boarding) and had them over to dinner as a thank you within the fortnight.
Basic bloody manners!
