Is this rude?

I volunteered to look after the neighbours cat while they were away. I don't know then well, but like animals and happy to help neighbours.

The keys were dropped through my letterbox in an envelope, with no instructions. I had to message to check where food was and how much to give. Place was less than pristine, and I had to clean maggots and litter tray (I didn't know this was an indoor cat). Visited 3 times a day to check on the cat, due to heat wave.

On their return, I didn't hear anything. I messaged to ask when they would like their keys back. They said they would collect at X time. No show. Finally knocked on door, to return keys.

I didn't do a favour to receive something back, but was surprised I didn't receive even a verbal thank you on return.

How rude! Don’t do it again

DieSchottin93 · 04/09/2020 18:29

I feel sorry for the poor cat Sad Sad

TheNestedIf · 04/09/2020 18:32

Extremely rude. I would have offered to pay and would have left full instructions, the food somewhere convenient and brought you back a couple of bottles of holiday booze as a thank you.

There is no excuse for the maggots, poor cat. Even if they're careless enough to let flies in, they should have spotted eggs on the food long before they got to maggot stage.

AnneElliott · 04/09/2020 18:33

Terribly rude - I get my cousin a bottle of wine for popping round twice a day for a weekend!

Thisismytimetoshine · 04/09/2020 18:33

Unbelievably ignorant, but why did you volunteer in the first place? It's an odd thing to do without even being asked?

IlovecatsyesIdo · 04/09/2020 18:34

They are really rude.
Poor cat.

hibbledibble · 04/09/2020 18:36

Maybe volunteer isn't the correct word. I had hinted I would be happy to look after their cat, and they asked me. So far, fine. I was just surprised at the lack of a thank you.

I've learnt my lesson and will only be animal sitting for people I know well in the future.

I’m paying my neighbour’s teenager to do this exact regime ( minus maggots and filth) next week. £15 a day so yes, very rude indeed and VCF.

Do not agree again they are awful.

TheNestedIf · 04/09/2020 18:41

They were rude but you were kind to the cat. There is a positive, at least.

BlueJava · 04/09/2020 18:44

Wow! That's very rude of them. Normally if someone has even kept an eye on the house I'd bring something (local delicacy or flowers). Definitely for looking after a cat.

mygrandchildrenrock · 04/09/2020 18:45

Yes they were rude.
I fed a neighbour’s cat for over two weeks, she didn’t let me know when she was coming back. I spent £7 on extra food because she didn’t leave enough for 2 weeks.
I haven’t had the food replaced (I have cats) nor has she offered to reimburse me for the food and she’s been back a while. I also think she is rude!

category12 · 04/09/2020 18:45

I wouldn't be agreeing to do it again, that's for sure.

Ethicalbluey45 · 04/09/2020 18:47

how very rude for me that would be a dont bloody ask me again next time you ungrateful pair

Shockingstocking · 04/09/2020 18:49

So they asked?!! That is so very rude.

purpleme12 · 04/09/2020 18:49

I don't think it's an odd thing to volunteer to go if you love cats

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 04/09/2020 18:49

Yeah its rude not to thank you

neveradullmoment99 · 04/09/2020 18:53

Similar here but to water plants. No thank you whatsoever or even an acknowledgment after i had said!

Ideasplease322 · 04/09/2020 18:54

You saved them a fortune. I used a cattery, cost £140 and my cat had a miserable time, wound up at the emergency vet having had an allergic reaction to a flea bite😿

If a neighbour saved me that cost and stress, I would be incredibly grateful.

neveradullmoment99 · 04/09/2020 18:55

I should clarify, i said to her in talking that i went round as asked to water her plants. No comment! She asked me!

Eddielzzard · 04/09/2020 18:56

I wouldn't do it again. CF's. You went out of your way, they took you for granted.

Flackattack · 04/09/2020 18:56

Soooo rude! I’m always so grateful to our neighbour - it’s only polite to drop the key at the sitters convenience - leave instructions and give a suitably generous thank you present and card - anything else is so rude and it dyes save stress (me and the cats) and money!

Blueringedoctopus · 04/09/2020 18:56

A "friend" did similar to me. Turned out her 2 were also indoor cats (not explained until she gave me the key) but one of them used the floor rather than the litter tray. I looked after them for 2 weeks and the friend finally dropped a bottle of wine round 12 weeks after they got back (apparently she'd been to busy despite the fact she's a SAHM and obviously lives walking distance from my house) My 2 go in a cattery if we are away more than 2 nights and it costs £14 a day - which she can easily afford. She asked me to do it again and I said no but offered to give her the name of the cattery. Strangely we aren't friends anymore.

feistyoneyouare · 04/09/2020 18:59

They sound like absolute CFs. Especially as you checked on the cat often, at their request.

OohIsThatAFlake · 04/09/2020 19:01

I agreed to feed an acquaintance’s two cats for a few days. There were maggots in the food bowl. Place was rank. One of the cats then had kittens. It’s been three weeks now and cost £60 in food and cat litter.

OohIsThatAFlake · 04/09/2020 19:01

Hope I get a thank you and some flowers when he returns ....
