Family member trying to sign us up for overpriced stuff

lookatmememe · 04/09/2020 10:15

Am I being unreasonable to not buy stuff from family member who's now 'selling products' that are far more expensive than what anyone can buy in the high street, that claim to do the same things ?! ( think multi vits / sliming products etc)

Especially when I see posts on their social media saying how much bonus they have earn't for them and the person who signed them up ?

It's not like they are unemployed, this is in addition for their full time work.

I get they they are trying to make money. i get that things might be tough for people at the moment. But I also think it's kind of unfair to bombard family and guilt them into buying the stuff .

I'm on the app so no idea if this will set up a poll or not - but if it does

I am being unreasonable= I should support them and buy the stuff from them

I'm not being unreasonable = just say I'll stick with the brand I currently use thanks.

Thanks in advance .

God no don’t buy from them, it just gives these shitty MLM schemes more traction. If people stop buying, they’ll die out.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/09/2020 10:29

Why on earth would you think you are unreasonable? Confused

Even if they are desperate for money for some reason, there are better ways to raise it than trying to con family and friends into buying overpriced shite that they don't want. Especially as they will only earn a commission and it will be someone else who's making most of the profit.

CitizenFame · 04/09/2020 10:30

Strengthen your backbone and tell them no. Or just block/mute them.

Chloemol · 04/09/2020 10:32

YANBU. It’s a MLM. Hopefully they will soon realise they have been hoodwinked

Just keep saying no

vapeinafleshlight · 04/09/2020 10:33

Don't buy from an MLM bot Shock

Ever! How embarrassing for them.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 04/09/2020 10:34

NO

Hoppinggreen · 04/09/2020 10:35

MLM shite
Just be supportive when it goes tits up and they have lost most of their friends

imissthesouth · 04/09/2020 10:36

I hate things like this, a few at the top make a fair amount whilst everyone else makes pennies and often loses out. Never buy from them, as a PP mentioned, if everyone stopped buying then the schemes would eventually die out.

bambooplant · 04/09/2020 10:38

Absolutely do not buy anything. MLMs prey on people looking for ‘the perfect job working from home’. They are all a con and i have never heard a success story regarding anyone signing up for them. By buying something you’re directly funding the operation, don’t do it. You are not being unreasonable at all. Sorry that your family member has signed up for this, the ‘bonuses’ and benefits are always exaggerated and never come to fruition

Soubriquet · 04/09/2020 10:38

MLM

Stay well clear

KatharinaRosalie · 04/09/2020 10:41

Especially when I see posts on their social media saying how much bonus they have earn't for them and the person who signed them up

Ask them how much stock they had to buy themselves for this. Not only is it unlikely she is making money, 99% of MLM sellers actually lose money.

Norma27 · 04/09/2020 10:49

Definitely an MLM/pyramid scheme.
Of course you should stick with the brand you like and not buy their overpriced shite.

heartonastring · 04/09/2020 10:54

Just say no!

TenDays · 04/09/2020 10:56

Tell them it's too expensive for you.

MatildaTheCat · 04/09/2020 10:56

It’s not difficult, you simply say you aren’t interested in the product thanks. Or if it’s toiletries/ makeup you say you have a stock at home you are using and like the brands so won’t be changing thanks.

Any further ‘Reaching Out’ should be met with silence.

Haffiana · 04/09/2020 10:59

It is unbelievable that people who join these MLMs expect their friends and family to pay for their shit-poor, greedy decision-making. How bloody dare they.

How utterly insulting to you they are being. I would - and have - cut people off for this.

TrickorTreacle · 04/09/2020 10:59

I fail to understand why MLMs aren't outlawed yet.

thenightsky · 04/09/2020 11:00

YANBU.

I had an ex who bought boxes and boxes of products, and attended 'meetings' all over the country. He spent every penny of his inheritance, which wasn't huge, but would have been his only chance at a house deposit.

He claimed to be 'building a business'.

Last I heard he was back living with his mother at the age of 50, still single and working for We Buy Any Car.

IWantT0BreakFree · 04/09/2020 11:01

MLM bullshit. I have family members (on DH's side - mine have their flaws but none of them would stoop to this) who are involved in a certain MLM that allows them to earn a white Mercedes (lease, that they are ultimately responsible for paying 🙄). They have pestered me to the point that I have had to be quite curt in return. They do this fucking arsehole's trick of wording it like "I really need your support to help me achieve my dreams and goals".

You need to view it like this: yes, family and friends support each other. So where is their support for you? Why are they trying to make you spend money you don't want to/can't afford to spend? That's unkind, rude, unsupportive, exploitative wankery. You owe them NOTHING if they would treat you like that.

My family members are already much wealthier than we are and they are attempting to guilt me into spending money that they know I don't have, money that I need to feed and clothe their nieces and nephews, to fund their ridiculous Instagram lifestyle of partying on yachts and taking endless city breaks. It's taken me some time to find my teeth but I have a zero tolerance for their BS now. If they cared about us, they wouldn't be trying to take our money. So I no longer feel the need to be polite or feel guilty for not handing over my hard earned cash.

DowntonCrabby · 04/09/2020 11:02

“No thank you, I don’t need the stuff and don’t support MLM”

Tanith · 04/09/2020 11:04

It's the selfish, amoral multimillionaires at the top of these schemes that are the greedy ones. Many new sellers are just desperate.

There is a special circle in Hell reserved for the owners of MLM companies, where they'll be forced to consume their own products for all eternity.

KatherineOfGaunt · 04/09/2020 11:05

Support, yes. But it shouldn't take my money to support you!

I have a playdate with a hunbot next week. Let's see if she tries to recruit me...

lottiegarbanzo · 04/09/2020 11:06

It's glorified begging. Just say 'no thank you'.

GinDrinker00 · 04/09/2020 11:07

No I wouldn’t buy from them. YANBU.
I hate MLM. Even body shop is more expensive than what you can buy it in the stores. 😒

BlusteryShowers · 04/09/2020 11:09

I have a body shop one and a tropics one pestering me at the moment. I've also previously had friends do Usborne books and the aloe Vera one
