Family member trying to sign us up for overpriced stuff

lookatmememe · 04/09/2020 10:15

Am I being unreasonable to not buy stuff from family member who's now 'selling products' that are far more expensive than what anyone can buy in the high street, that claim to do the same things ?! ( think multi vits / sliming products etc)

Especially when I see posts on their social media saying how much bonus they have earn't for them and the person who signed them up ?

It's not like they are unemployed, this is in addition for their full time work.

I get they they are trying to make money. i get that things might be tough for people at the moment. But I also think it's kind of unfair to bombard family and guilt them into buying the stuff .

I'm on the app so no idea if this will set up a poll or not - but if it does

I am being unreasonable= I should support them and buy the stuff from them

I'm not being unreasonable = just say I'll stick with the brand I currently use thanks.

Thanks in advance .

I absolutely hate this. I've been invited to so many "social" evenings that have turned out to be MLM parties that now if someone invites me I check it isn't one of those.
I just say if I turn up and its MLM oh sorry you didn't tell me it was one of these parties, I can't afford to buy anything like this roght now, I'm saving up for work on the house.
One friend had the bloody cheek to ask if she could come and stay with me for 4 days for a holiday and bought a whole load of MLM products for me to look at and buy!!!
I said straight I won't buy that stuff and there was a terrible atmosphere for the whole 4 days. I was so pissed off to be used in that way.

madcatladyforever · 04/09/2020 13:01

Another friend had a lovely little business with a beautiful website that was really taking off, then she had the mad idea to sell all her MLM stuff on there as well and now wonders why it's doing so badly.

topcat2014 · 04/09/2020 13:02

It is almost as if shops did not exist to these people.

If I need stuff, I buy it - online or from shops.

I hate the way MLM cults operate.

JulieHere · 04/09/2020 13:04

Does anyone on here actually buy this overpriced stuff to 'support' a friend or family member?

Does anyone on here sell the stuff?

I know a few people who sell on Facebook things they make sweet bags (again overpriced), cakes, knitted and crochet bits n bobs etc but at least with that there is no commission to someone further up a MLM chain

JulieHere · 04/09/2020 13:08

@DobbyLovesSocks

Oh my - I have a couple of 'friends' that do this and also send me links to secret groups to save money! One of them keeps posting make up videos and her pictures are all ridiculously filtered so she looks nothing like that in real life (apparently it the brilliant make up!!!) Hmm

Seriously do they think we are all thick?

'Plus they keep doing those stupid 'live' videos, mostly talking bollocks. I've had to snooze them both as its so annoying.'

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 04/09/2020 13:11

If it's an MLM, virtually everyone loses money. You're doing the kindest thing by not abetting them dragging that process out.

MoonBaby1 · 04/09/2020 13:34

@KatherineOfGaunt please tell us about the play date in a thread next week?!

I once had the weirdest play date years ago that turned out to be a selling pitch Grin

RiotAndAlarum · 04/09/2020 15:01

I do buy from friends who are making their own things... and would probably do the same if it were a franchise (e.g. a franchised children's group if the group were good, e.g. I've attended Sing & Sign and things like that) but absolutely not to fund a multi-level structure!

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 04/09/2020 15:06

Just tell them you are really happy with the brands you use. No-one decent would try manipulating their family into buying stuff they don't want.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 04/09/2020 15:11

God i cant stand mlm either...i have a Yoooooonique bot on fb...she is sooo cringe worthy...i only keep her on my feed for entertainnent.

lookatmememe · 04/09/2020 18:00

Amazing thank you all . I've said no thank you,I'll stick with my current brands. Will hopefully be the end of it.

👍

justilou1 · 05/09/2020 09:05

I bet it’s not the end of it... these people are given “strategies” covering how to increase the guilt trips

DobbyLovesSocks · 05/09/2020 12:31

And if you click on the comments on one of their 'selling' posts, nearly everyone who comments is either family or a fellow hun bot. I clicked on one the other day as the post had about 27 comments. Clicking on each of the people, 25/27 were also selling the same shite. I can't believe its lucrative as there can only be so many people wanting to buy.
One of them boasted today about one of her team earning 14k during COVID - yeah right!

BSintolerant · 05/09/2020 13:19

Remember in the language of MLMS (known as Botshite) the word “no” doesn’t mean “no” - it means “Not right now.”

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 06/09/2020 13:31

I remember a friend was buying Mway (sounded liked that) products. The toothpaste was so expensive. They really thought they were buying miracle products. If there are people who buy such products then of course there will be people who sell them.

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 06/09/2020 13:32

Amway apparently

BSintolerant · 06/09/2020 13:33

Most of the people who buy MLM products are the reps themselves. They’re encouraged to be their own best customers.

thenightsky · 06/09/2020 13:53

@WhatifIfeellikeacat

Amway was the company my friend lost all his inheritance to. His only chance of a house deposit, gone. All on boxes and boxes of cleaning products, skin care, make up (wtf) and shampoo, all at eye-watering prices.

MulticolourMophead · 06/09/2020 14:15

Amway was one of the first MLMs, wasn't it? I recall a family member many years ago doing Amway. But not for long.

Aweebawbee · 06/09/2020 14:43

It's the weirdest thing. I've had really sensible, intelligent friends who I've been chatting to suddenly coming over all strange, like they've been possessed, and robotically spewing out a sales pitch for an obscure product that I've have never expressed an interest in. They're not even properly selling the product, they're trying to sell you the lifestyle benefits so that you will sell for them. Ditch and run!

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 06/09/2020 16:08

@thenightsky
Just unbelievable. What a gamble.

AdoraBell · 06/09/2020 16:14

No, no, and no again. YANBU.

BetterCallSaul99 · 06/09/2020 16:52

I've a Facebook friend who is on Avon raffles and essentials? No idea if this is an MLM but I'm assuming so. I'd love to know what the costs involved are just to be nosy. She posts about 5 times a day (that I notice). I don't know her well enough to ask her but would hate to think she'll lose money from it.

wonderpants · 06/09/2020 17:02

I have a group of friends selling body shop at the moment!
But they just seem to buy off each other. I don't get it!
Then I see their friends buying shitloads of stuff and buying serious amounts of raffle tickets.
Yet our local body shop branch is always empty.
