Should we or should we not be wiping shopping??

I know the gov say it isn't necessary but lots of people are still wiping down or quarantining shopping. Should we be?

OP posts:
tobee · 03/09/2020 23:38

My friend does it but has teens who have been mixing households and not socially distancing for weeks! Don't get that.

I've never done it but been scrupulous about distancing etc etc. We've been shielding as well.

Transmission through touch is rated low to not proven

This was on Apple News today:-

Whitneylilyrose · 03/09/2020 23:41

Spray with disinfectant.

I stopped doing it though as it made my dog sneeze.

I wash veg ect

Rainb0wDrops · 03/09/2020 23:42

Nope and never have

starlet14 · 03/09/2020 23:43

Nope. Actually never really did tbh. Probably should have but I live in area with a very low number of cases. Still a risk obviously but didn't feel it was needed.

Menora · 03/09/2020 23:44

No I don’t and never have and never will do either

devuskums · 03/09/2020 23:50

After going in Lidl today for the first time since lockdown started, and seeing no sanitizer, few wearing masks and most oblivious to social distancing yes I will be bleaching or quarantining my shopping...

Crunchymum · 03/09/2020 23:53

How does one quarantine shopping?

devuskums · 03/09/2020 23:55

I just put anything not for the fridge or freezer in my cupboard for a few days. No drama

SeasideMaiden · 03/09/2020 23:56

Someone I know was shielding, and their partner wiped down their shopping deliveries, and he still caught it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 03/09/2020 23:56

Stick it in a garage for 3 days, if you have one. Read it on here somewhere lol

CountreeGurl · 03/09/2020 23:56

I do and probably will forever now I have thought about how many grubby hands touch food packaging

AlwaysLatte · 04/09/2020 00:01

I still bleach all the shopping. Even with no virus I would after seeing the colour of the water afterwards!

newwnamme · 04/09/2020 00:01

If you have time to wipe down your shopping, or even time to spend mulling over whether it should or needn't be wiped, you're in a more privileged position than most people living through this pandemic.

LEELULUMPKIN · 04/09/2020 00:17

I never started and IRL don't know anyone who did. Seems really OTT to me but each to their own. If you feel better doing it OP crack on.

SouthWestLolly · 04/09/2020 00:20

Haha no.
But if it was Ebola that was going around then yes I probably would.

Pipandmum · 04/09/2020 00:28

No. If people are really worried wear gloves and remove food from packaging.
The viral load would be minuscule if an infected person touched it. The science doesn't support the idea of washing or quarantining packaging.

BananaPop2020 · 04/09/2020 00:31

Nope, nor do I quarantine mail, wash veg or any of the other things that some people find necessary. Is nobody worried about the long term impact on their immune system? We are meant to have at least some exposure to viruses, germs etc. I can see real problems ahead.

IdblowJonSnow · 04/09/2020 00:34

No... a step too far for me. I do quarantine my post for a day or two though! Also known as ignoring dull post such as bill's and statements.

Also, how the actual fuck can you disinfect things like a loaf of bread or box of cereal?

notangelinajolie · 04/09/2020 00:46

I do. Zoflora.
It doesn't take too long and my way of thinking is it's better to be safe than sorry. What harm will it do?

WanderingMilly · 04/09/2020 01:05

I still wipe mine, a proper sanitising of everything. I don't want to be putting things in my 'fridge or cupboards without doing so, I feel far more comfortable doing this.
No idea what anyone else does and I don't care, I'm not harming anyone and it makes me feel safer, so I shall carry on. Whether we "should" or "shouldn't" doesn't decide what I will do in this particular case...

Covids not gone - still wiping

LowLou · 04/09/2020 01:18

We started as we were shielding. I'm sick.of it now and considered stopping recently but there has been a very big community transmission jump in cases locally so I've decided I'll just keep it up.

We get click and collect so it's good way to see what dates are on what etc. I bung on the radio and sing and boogie as I do it.

I quarantine non perishable stuff for a few days to minimise the amount of time it takes..

ThatDamnScientist · 04/09/2020 01:31

Yep, can you know for sure that the person who picked and packed your shopping washed his/her hands after going to the loo? Or any of the people who may have picked up that can of soup haven't just sneezed in their hand and then picked it up, put it down again and then you pick it up? Either of those scenarios can apply covid or no covid, people are gross! (admittedly I wouldn't quarantine stuff were it not for covid but I would still wipe stuff down).
