They often seem to get toothpaste on themselves and it looks horrible.

@SummerPoppies

You are supposed to brush your teeth on waking, before eating or drinking anything. This is because all the bacteria which builds up in your mouth overnight will be swallowed with food and drink if not removed by brushing beforehand, which in turn, leads to illness as the bacteria enters your system. Healthy mouth = healthy body.
Really?
WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 03/09/2020 19:49

Before I get dressed and go to the office I put on one of those large yellow capes things that cyclists used to wear, complete with so'wester, then eat my porridge, slurp down coffee, jet wash the patio, rod the drains, clean the oven, bleach 3 toilets and then, and only then get dressed. Then I brush my teeth. Where am I going wrong?

SauvyB · 03/09/2020 19:50

I read this thinking that you meant why do people get dressed, why do people brushes their teeth 🙈

KeepSmiling89 · 03/09/2020 20:06

I shower, get dressed, have breakfast then brush my teeth.
Breakfast tastes horrible with a minty taste in my mouth especially if I have fruit!

I like to leave the house feeling minty fresh...and lean over the sink to avoid any accidents!

Sally872 · 03/09/2020 20:07

Rarely see any adult with toothpaste on them so assume they don't spill or do teeth before dressing.

ramarama · 03/09/2020 20:22

because there is little point brushing my teeth then ruining the effect with coffee straight afterwards. plus I have to do it with my kid after his breakfast too, to make sure he's doing his properly.
i'm sure others will have equally valid reasons.......

isseywith4vampirecats · 03/09/2020 20:30

i brush my teeth after breakfast because food tastes weird mixed with minty flavoured toothpaste

MsEllany · 03/09/2020 20:39

I don’t precisely because I’m incapable of doing it without getting toothpaste everywhere. I also do it before breakfast. But generally breakfast is around 11.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 03/09/2020 20:42

I don’t shower in the morning, so can’t clean my teeth in the bathroom beforehand.

Bloody hell, what next. I'd imagine if that bacteria were so awful, swallowing before being able to brush your teeth would be deadly.

What a lot of nonsense.

BashfulClam · 03/09/2020 21:10

You are meant to brush before eating as it ruins the enamel if you brush straight after eating.

Mummybiscuitx · 03/09/2020 21:14

I brush my teeth, get dressed, have a tea (usually cold by the time I get to it) then brush my teeth again before going out. If I'm going out out I always brush my teeth before leaving the house. I also use mouthwash before brushing then after brushing.

ouch321 · 03/09/2020 21:15

I brush teeth before showering.

You're not supposed to brush straight after eating anyway as that's when your enamel is softened.

Though when I have brushed my teeth when dressed I don't normally spill.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 03/09/2020 21:30

I thought you were wondering why people bother getting dressed at all.

When my kids were little they had to eat breakfast and clean their teeth before putting their school uniforms on. They are now teenagers who wear white shirts so they just have to eat and do teeth before putting their ties on ... They may, one day, be competent adults who can clean their teeth without getting toothpaste on their ties. Hmm. I’m going to ask dh at which point he puts his tie on ...

megletthesecond · 03/09/2020 21:40

I always wonder this.

Breakfast and tooth brushing in pj's here.
Clothes on last before I go out the door so I don't get sweaty when I'm stressed herding the kids around.

paintmegood · 03/09/2020 21:48

I can't brush my teeth after I'm dressed or have make up on, that would be a disaster but I am clumsy. I brush them before I get ready in the morning. I have breakfast much later if at all. I can't eat first thing.

noworklifebalance · 03/09/2020 22:27

Yes, really - you are meant brush before eating breakfast. If you also want to brush after eating you need to wait 30min or so for the reasons PPs have mentioned.

Bacteria in your mouth is clearly not going to harm you if you swallow it - bacteria work in different ways and the gastric acid will most likely “kill” it before it can do anything.

noworklifebalance · 03/09/2020 22:33

I appreciate it’s very very difficult to change these habits. You are also not meant to rinse your mouth out after brushing and it’s something I just can’t not do, however, I have brought up my DCs to not rinse after brushing so they are used to it.

RowboatsinDisguise · 03/09/2020 22:43

I brush my teeth last thing before I leave the house usually. That might be before breakfast, it might be after... depends what day!

Your first sentence is correct. Your explanation is not. Main reason for brushing first is because acids in food will weaken the enamel, so after breakfast your teeth are more damaged by brushing than they would be before breakfast.
Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 03/09/2020 22:46

I’ve decided that DS (6) should brush his teeth before getting dressed from today as it always goes down his front!

I don’t often see adults with toothpaste all down them though.

Mrsmorton · 03/09/2020 22:47

@Mummybiscuitx you're wasting time and money with mouthwash. It's almost always pointless unless you're using it for a specific reason recommended by your dentist/hygienist and by using it after brushing, you're also getting no real benefit from your toothpaste.

Me too

lioncitygirl · 03/09/2020 22:48

Because I am an adult and not a child - I am able to brush my teeth without getting it down my clothes. HTH.

Lweji · 03/09/2020 22:49

I don't brush my teeth in the morning.
Sorted.
