To think Hyde Park winter wonderland should not be cancelled?

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 03/09/2020 17:09

It has just been announced it's cancelled due to corona. www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/breaking-hyde-park-winter-wonderland-22616729

At a time where deaths, hospital admissions and positive tests are really low, should we not trying to go move life forward instead of cancelling events?

I know what people are gonna say, "you can't social distance at winter wonderland", but pubs are open and how many people are social distancing there?

It depends if you want the deaths, hospital admission and positive tests to stay low or not.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 03/09/2020 19:49

I do think it needs to be, I’m afraid.

I hope smaller things will be able to stay open, and that people will be able to go on U.K. holidays (in the same way as they could over the summer - with distancing and cleaning measures in force) and visit family though. It’ll mean a lot to people, but I think anything as big as winter wonderland is a no go.

Queenoftheashes · 03/09/2020 19:53

I can’t understand why anyone goes to that ridiculous place

MinnieMousse · 03/09/2020 19:56

It’s one of the most crowded unsafe environments I’ve ever been in.

Yep, totally unsuitable for any form of social distancing. I went the first year and it was really enjoyable but it was a victim of its own success and just became unbearably crowded.

megletthesecond · 03/09/2020 20:10

Yabu.
"At a time where deaths, hospital admissions and positive tests are really low, should we not trying to go move life forward instead of cancelling events?" But we don't know that's going to be the case in December.
Better to cancel now than muck everyone around in Dec.

tornadoalley · 03/09/2020 20:20

A nice crowded event is just the thing to get numbers rising again.

kittensarecute · 03/09/2020 20:25

So over things being cancelled, are we not allowed any pleasure at all this year?

ktp100 · 03/09/2020 20:27

There would probably be smaller cash losses from cancelling now than doing all of the prep and cancelling later.

All the talk of government prepping for a second wave in October/November is bound to put companies off taking a risk by planning a huge event in December.

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 03/09/2020 20:34

@BashfulClam

Yes! Let’s cram people together in a confined area and have people trucking to walk past. Don’t panic it’s only a killer virus after all.
For most people it's about as killer as the flu and we don't cancel events because of the flu. Get a grip

I agree! It was lovely when it first started. When I went back a few years later it was awful.

I do think people should be allowed some enjoyment but smaller things, and things that can be successfully distanced.

Closing things with massive crowds might be how we manage to do other things safely.

Yeah just like the rise in cases that happened after the beaches being packed, pubs being packed and BLM protests.. Not.

YABU we are in the middle of a pandemic!
We're rally not, by WHO's own admission.

I think it’s pretty sensible
Too much uncertainty about winter and it would be impossible to manage it

AndAllOurYesterdays · 03/09/2020 20:38

It's so crowded. They have to close Green Park underground as it gets too busy with visitors. No way it should go ahead this year

NotABridezillaToBe · 03/09/2020 20:43

I’d imagine it’s impossible to insure against Covid risk ie another lock down. Who is going to take the chance planning it and potentially lose a vast amount of money? Commercial reasons aside, it doesn’t sound like a great idea to plan such a large scale event during a pandemic.

Nanalisa60 · 03/09/2020 20:46

TheClitterati

If this goes on till winter 2021, we won’t have any Christmas party’s to go to because the economy will have gone down the toilet, and we will all be unemployed!!

I agree.

Perhaps this will help people run these events for enjoyment and not just consumerism.

They may have to. People will want better standard events now.

The arts is suffering badly and events trade is struggling.

But perhaps this will help reset some of that.

I've seen outside cinemas like drive throughs which have added to the already outdoor pop up cinemas we've had recently.

I really hope for the events trade we get more running but with lesser numbers.

If they're smart they could come out the otherwise if this well. I just hope they can survive to get that far.

No, but we do vaccinate the vulnerable against flu.

SheepandCow · 04/09/2020 00:39

It seems pointless cancelling it.
We're seeing almost daily mass gatherings in London and other cities (never the shires). One protest after another about anything that can possibly be protested about, and all the illegal raves across the UK. Thousands and thousands crowded together. If that's going on, we might as well have Christmas events.

Of course, had we done the sensible thing and used our advantage as an island (like Aus, NZ, and Isle of Man did) in temporarily closing our borders, we could have had both - Christmas celebrations and safety. I suppose it's possible to still do that if people really wanted. One to two months lockdown now with six-twelve months of border restrictions, and we could have a normal Christmas. Whether there's the public will is another issue. We have the choice though.

Unless someone's got a genuine crystal ball they can't say for certain how dangerous or deadly Covid is. We certainly don't yet know enough about Long Covid and the potential permanent organ damage.
Sennetti · 04/09/2020 00:58

It’s just an overpriced fair in a muddy field. Old shabby equipment, food stands just grease and sugar. Well overpriced

Why would anyone bother?

Chienloup · 04/09/2020 01:01

It would have been cancelled years ago. It's shit and expensive.

Chienloup · 04/09/2020 01:01

Should have! Not would have!

Thisseatisnotavailable · 04/09/2020 01:31

Winter wonderland was lovely the first 2 years. Hated it ever since, it's tacky and totally overpriced and RAMMED you can't move. Glad to see the back of it, hopefully for good.

This with bells on.

merrymouse · 04/09/2020 06:18

It’s not a case of ‘do this so you might as well do that’. It’s ‘if you do this you can’t do that’.

Also, as has been pointed out, it probably isn’t financially viable with social distancing.
