To think Hyde Park winter wonderland should not be cancelled?

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 03/09/2020 17:09

It has just been announced it's cancelled due to corona. www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/breaking-hyde-park-winter-wonderland-22616729

At a time where deaths, hospital admissions and positive tests are really low, should we not trying to go move life forward instead of cancelling events?

I know what people are gonna say, "you can't social distance at winter wonderland", but pubs are open and how many people are social distancing there?

Have you ever attended?

Although it's outdoors so risk reduced, the crowds are massive, and the tubes & buses rammed.

SerenityNowwwww · 03/09/2020 18:22

And so expensive! And crowded. Everything is overpriced. And the queues!

PrimalLass · 03/09/2020 18:24

@MorrisZapp

The Edinburgh winter wonderland is legendarily expensive. A local reporter once calculated that yard for yard, the kiddies 'Santa Express' train ride cost more than the Orient Express.

I'll miss the fresh doughnuts, mind.

The only good thing was the skating and that wasn't on last year anyway.
AIBU22 · 03/09/2020 18:27

The virus is still as present as ever and opinions like this are harmful. People are getting so careless and acting like we're over this pandemic when we are VERY much still in it. I work for the NHS. As previous posters have said, yes great idea let's pack loads of people into a space and have them all touching the same things and breathing the same air. Also when people seem to have forgotten social distancing is a thing. FFS.

As I live in that part of the country known as The North I really couldn’t give a tinker’s damn that an overpriced event in London has been cancelled Grin

Are yo tagged following early release from prison and unable to travel or be out after 7pm?

It is a major national and international tourist attraction

StCharlotte · 03/09/2020 18:39

A bit different but I used to go to the Christmas Market every year in Winchester until (a) I realised it was the same stalls and pretty much the same stock every year and (b) it became too crowded to get near the stalls anyway We now go to smaller local Christmas markets (and the massive one at Ardingly which wasn't too crowded).

Obviously - and rightly - won't be going to any this year Sad

ChicCroissant · 03/09/2020 18:43

I take it you've never been then, OP? Very busy.

Orangecake123 · 03/09/2020 18:44

I went towards the end so it was less crowded. We really enjoyed it last year but it is super pricey.

nosswith · 03/09/2020 18:46

The correct decision made in good time. Try to social distance in the local tube stations for example, never mind the venue.

honeygirlz · 03/09/2020 18:48

Winter Wonderland iz shit. Gavel.

Happygogoat · 03/09/2020 18:52

Winter wonderland was lovely the first 2 years. Hated it ever since, it's tacky and totally overpriced and RAMMED you can't move. Glad to see the back of it, hopefully for good.

I'm sure other cities will have tasteful outdoors Xmas markets where possible.

nancy75 · 03/09/2020 18:52

@Charleyhorses

So you are paying to put it on. You are in an environment where nobody actually knows if corona will lead to another lockdown which will spell financial disaster. You cannot insure against that risk. What would you feckin do?
Very good point. My friend runs a team that puts a lot of Winter Wonderland & other xmas markets together (they physically build it) it's a huge job for him and makes him a lot of money but he would rather know now that it was cancelled than shell out on costs to build and be told a week before it's all off.
jakesmommy · 03/09/2020 18:56

We went to the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland last Christmas, it was packed so it would be difficult to socially distance, in fact after we came back home to Birmingham we were all very poorly afterwards.

Rosehip10 · 03/09/2020 19:06

Who cares? - it is a rip off tourist trap.

Legoandloldolls · 03/09/2020 19:13

Ti think all the Christmas markets etc are off this year.

It's going to be a dull season that's for sure, I'm just consoling myself that spend more next Christmas, or what ever Christmas this is over by.

I cant imagine ever going out in a really crowded place ever again. I suppose I will get used to crowds again eventually but I think even if we hit hard immunity or have a vaccine one day it will a very long time after for go back to normal events

SquirmOfEels · 03/09/2020 19:16

I think it will be nice for the grass to have a year off.

They have to do extensive maintenance/reseeding afterwards, and huge swathes of the park are fenced off for months afterwards as theynrestore it (and yes, I do mean months, it takes until about Easter)

BigSandyBalls2015 · 03/09/2020 19:24

It was fab the first year or two but has just got bigger and bigger and more expensive every year. It’s been ruined.

Nanalisa60 · 03/09/2020 19:29

I think we all have to face the fact that most things are off this year, no Pantomimes,no Christmas markets, No winter festivals, no Hogmanay, no bonfire night fireworks displays, no Christmas balls or dinner dances, no works bring a party to a party!! No midnight mass!! This whole year is a wright off!!
It’s all so bloody depressing!! 2020 is just pants!!

TheClitterati · 03/09/2020 19:32

Oh I for one will miss WW this year. We have a special savings jar for it & always have a great day out there going on all the silly rides (not the giant ones thank goodness as DC not old enough for those yet) and eating eye wateringly expensive sausages, beer and churros.

Its not always very crowded - in fact most times I've been there its been pleasently buzzy but not over crowded at all.

itsgettingweird · 03/09/2020 19:32

Awwww. I was coming on to say I love visiting Winchester market!

You're right - same stalls. And every year. I think the stall owners might own those sheds or have or brought them etc.

But I much prefer the traditional style of the market. And the ice rink.

And the cathedral is just amazing.

You can at least always garuntee to find some shitty Xmas jumper to wear!

yes we are not doing a whole lot of stuff this year. I wonder if we will be having Christmas parties in 2021?
Polnm · 03/09/2020 19:33

Less pink puke I suppose

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 03/09/2020 19:39

in fact after we came back home to Birmingham we were all very poorly afterwards

I went with a group a couple of years ago & was the only one who wasn’t poorly afterwards. I was also the only one not to have a hot chocolate from a certain stall, so.
