Is this fabric offensive?

I really like this fabric but I’m unsure whether it could be seen as offensive or at the least raise an eyebrow if you saw it in someone’s house? It’s got a stereotypical Native American character in it.

yes, that image makes me cringe.

contrmary · 03/09/2020 11:53

It looks pretty unpleasant and I certainly would question (internally) why someone had it in their house. But if you like it then why care what I think?

TheHappyHerbivore · 03/09/2020 11:55

I find it pretty inappropriate personally.

Twickerhun · 03/09/2020 11:56

Any stereotyping is a bad idea imho

BrimfulOfBaba · 03/09/2020 11:57

I think it depends on two things: who was the designer (if they're a native american designer then its them creating art out of their culture) and what is it that you like about the design? If you like the overall design, great. It could just help to examine what draws you to it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 03/09/2020 11:58

Far too busy pattern

hastingsmua1 · 03/09/2020 11:58

I don’t think I’d look closely enough to notice that specific character, but I would think it is hideous and garish on first glance

lughnasadh · 03/09/2020 11:59

Oh.

it's the kind of thing my natural world loving 9 year old would request for cuisions etc.

What's wrong with it?

Where's it from?

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 03/09/2020 12:00

That image looks absolutely nothing like a native american to me.

The very fact that you feel like it could cause offense should be enough to put you if it. There are millions of nicer fabrics out there, why would you choose one that is controversial/possibly offensive to some?

SoupDragon · 03/09/2020 12:00

Yes, I think it now falls into the "offensive" Category. In the same way cartoon gollies would really (both being cartoon stereotypes).

SoupDragon · 03/09/2020 12:01

The second picture is worse than the first really - it gives an idea of scale.

Plussizejumpsuit · 03/09/2020 12:02

Not ok. Also very ugly

Thecobwebsarewinning · 03/09/2020 12:02

I love it.

TempName01 · 03/09/2020 12:03

I like it because of the colours and quirkiness of it, I know the style won’t be to many people’s taste, I’m purely asking about the character - looks like it’s a no no then!

ShellsAndSunrises · 03/09/2020 12:04

Is it a sofa?

ChikiTIKI · 03/09/2020 12:04

I definitely wouldn't buy or use that

Yeah it did put me off it but wanted to check I wasn’t being daft as the colours are so perfect for what I need. Laughing at how many of you hate it though 🤣

Sofa cover.

What do you want to use it for? Just looks like a cross person not specific to any genuine culture so ... very make-believe to me.

hastingsmua1 · 03/09/2020 12:12

I think it would look ok in cushion cover form, but not as a full blown sofa cover. It’s an eye sore! But small doses of the pattern might be ok.

TenDays · 03/09/2020 12:15

Thought at first this was one of those ornate floral fabrics that feature carefully-disguised drawings of genitals! How disappointing.

I'd use it if I liked it because it wouldn't be there forever and not that many people would see it.
If they did mention it I'd say 'Oh REALLY?' and make a show of looking closely at it.

daysofpearlyspencer · 03/09/2020 12:15

Looks like she's supposed to be a Pacific Islander, I do find it a bit offensive but it's your house so it's up to you.

I did think it looked a little bit of Hawaiian but the feather reminded me of the ‘cowboy and Indian’ theme that used to be popular in the 80’s. Not sure what it is intended to be.

AllPlayedOut · 03/09/2020 12:17

That's definitely not appropriate.
