I really like this fabric but I’m unsure whether it could be seen as offensive or at the least raise an eyebrow if you saw it in someone’s house? It’s got a stereotypical Native American character in it.

So which is it @LadyLairdArgyll of the above options. Genuinely interested.

clearly looking to label anyone who does not agree with you as racists ... tut tut

Plenty of people disagree with me and aren't racist. People who like coriander or salt and sweet together. All wrong, not racist.

People who argue that we should continue to use outdated stereotypical images of indigenous people when repeatedly asked not to by indigenous people... I'm struggling to see how that isn't racism.

Look for it you will find it ... you keep looking dear 🌺

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/09/2020 21:07

And in case you missed the questions, and I've answered yours, do you:

Know it's offensive to some people and not care?
Not know it's offensive to some people?
Think that because something isn't offensive to you/everyone it's not offensive to anyone?
Think we should all just be offensive if we want?
Not care because it's offensive to people mostly far away?

Or something else.

LadyLairdArgyll · 03/09/2020 21:08

OP... the Fabric is really lovely 💕

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/09/2020 21:09

Once more with feeling.

Are we talking about your backbone? No sign of it yet...

SmileyClare · 03/09/2020 21:41

A staggering amount of stubborn ignorance and sheer arrogance there LadyLaird Yuk.

pguppgdown · 03/09/2020 23:51

I quite like it: quirky child's bedroom type fabric, wouldn't have it as a dress fabric though, not these days... you'd end up twatter-shamed for 'cultural appropriation'.

liverbird10 · 04/09/2020 04:56

It's hideous.

Instinctively, I don't think the pattern is deliberately intended to be racist but is so by default of the characterisation.

I'd want to know more about the designer of the print before forming a judgement. I they have tried to do a Moana style character but missed the mark. Or maybe they have found a remnant of a similar piece of fabric from the 60's and liked the bold patterns and colours so tried to recreate it.

category12 · 04/09/2020 10:40

Intention isn't magic.

I don't know why my post was deleted.

I simply reposted MrsTerryPratchet's post because I liked it

Is there a rule against reposting posts you are impressed with?

Just really curious to know :)

hoodathunkit · 04/09/2020 21:37

The Frida Kahlo print is beautiful IMO

But then the art in it is directly taken from the artist''s own beautiful work

It bears no comparison the to infantilised, condescending stereotypical image in the OPs print

No

It was the post where you asked the really good questions

then you posted them again, I just thought they deserved to be posted again :)

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/09/2020 22:03

Probably seen as a personal attack on Lady then. Although anyone can answer the questions if they'd like!

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 04/09/2020 22:04

If you really want to stick with the faux-naive nonsense, then go ahead.

Just know that anyone with an IQ higher than that of garden furniture who came to your home would be seriously judging you for this.
