To stop wearing a bra?

Am over 40 now and I’ve never liked bras. I’ve had fittings but I still find them so uncomfortable to wear. Has anyone else given up on bras and do you have links to anything that is good to wear instead?

Me! (Waves)

I’m 40 and quit wearing normal bras 2 years ago. I think I came back from a long holiday without wearing any form of underwire and realised how awful they were!

I now only wear non underwire, non padded bras.
I now buy the lacy crop tops and find them
Super comfy.
I’d love to find some more sexy, Lacy, sheer styles without underwire but find that a real struggle.

AGoatAteIt · 02/09/2020 19:38

I never wear them at home and but as a size 34H I don’t feel confident enough to go sans bra when out and about. I’ve been measured plenty of times over the years and while my current bras are more comfortable than what I wore before, I’m still fed up wearing them.

ShiveringCoyote · 02/09/2020 19:57

Me. I don't bother anymore and just wear a vest top under my clothes. I'm a 34E.

RefuseTheLies · 02/09/2020 19:59

I stopped wearing bras about 5 years ago. Won’t ever go back. I wear crop / comfort tops.

1Morewineplease · 02/09/2020 20:02

Im mid fifties, stopped wearing bras around 10 years ago. Sports bras and cropped tops for me.

Wankerchief · 02/09/2020 20:11

I have just brought wireless padded crop tops today and im 35
I've never worn them before but I feel like I'm done with wired bras. Like you I've been measured countless times and spent a small fortune on bras, I'm hoping these will be the future for me.

My 11 year old niece who came with me did love the fact that she was buying her first 'proper bra' and I was buying starter bras. Savage Grin

pipnchops · 02/09/2020 20:16

I've just given up underwire, not wearing a bra at all is not an option for me but I find underwire so uncomfortable and I can't believe I've put up with it for so long. I liked the shape and uplift underwire gave me and didn't think that non underwired would give me the same. I was wrong! I've just purchased two bralettes from m&s and I'm so impressed. They are so so comfy, give great support and shape.

birdbrained · 02/09/2020 20:23

I love my sloggi zero-feel bralettes. Found them a few years ago and haven't worn anything else since. So comfy.

Stopped wearing a bra in the last few years before I got pregnant and have never gone back 😁

Definitely a number of sizes bigger than I was pre children maybe a DD now. Makes it easier to breastfeed

To be honest me and partner are slightly hippyish anyway so it doesn’t phase either of us.

Nobody has mentioned it and there have been no stares, honestly nobody gives a crap whether you wear one or not. It’s miles comfier without the bloody things though. No wires and straps digging in

Rainbowb · 02/09/2020 20:25

Thank you!! Can anyone recommend a good crop top? I’m small chested but chubby!!

KitKatKit · 02/09/2020 20:26

Bras are the devil! I've been wearing Sloggi crop tops for a few months and they're fab. I'm never wearing a bra again!

DracoDormiens · 02/09/2020 20:26

I’m a 34KK any advice on what I could wear instead of an underwired bra please?

aLilNonnyMouse · 02/09/2020 20:31

I'm a 40DD and quit wearing them about 5 years ago, they were causing me too much pain. I tend to wear nothing around the house, but if I'm going out and dressing up nice I'll wear a bralette (basically a stretchy crop top) that stops them jiggling all over the place without feeling restrictive.

Babyfg · 02/09/2020 20:31

I stopped wearing bras when I gave birth to my first at 29. I found the nursing bras awful and baby would dribble, so the cup would always be soaking. I wore crop top bras to nurse (so I could just hike them up). I tried to go back to bras but realised how bloody uncomfortable they were and stuck with crop tops! I buy cheap ones from Tesco or Asda and find them supportive enough when I went up to a d when nursing.

I've given up on bras since spring time this year. To be fair, I don't have any boobs anyway so never really 'needed' them. I now use these instead:

www.marksandspencer.com/flexifit-crop-top-bralet/p/clp60438341#carousel=FUNH_AT_SIMILAR_END_PDP_16_2

Downsides:

I miss the sexy/feminine feeling associated with wearing a pretty or glamourous bra
You need to buy the size bigger than you'd think to start with or they're far too tight, but they do stretch after a few washes
I don't have the 'boost' I get from a heavily padded bra. I just look what I am, utterly flat chested
The wide shoulder straps are almost always visible around my neckline. It looks silly.
They're kind of sweaty on hot days

Upsides:

Sooo comfortable. I sometimes have to remind myself to take it off of an evening - I couldn't wait to rip my bra off as soon as I got home before! No nasty clasps digging in, or itchy underbands, or straps sliding down.
Better coverage. I can bend over without risking showing nipple!
The padding is removable. You can even add thicker padding or 'chicken fillets' if desired.
Again, just so much more comfortable! I'm going to keep a couple of my old fancy bras for special occasions but the rest are going in the clothes bank when I next do a declutter!

mrsswayze · 02/09/2020 20:34

I was just going to start a thread about this! I'm 46 and have size 34e bra. The problem is I'm a nurse and do constant night shifts so often have a bra on for over 24 hours a day!
My problem is I find the side of breast get very sore from it digging in I've bought non wired bras but nothing helps.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 02/09/2020 20:37

Not wearing a bra is only okay if you have small breasts or if you don't mind them hanging down to your stomach when you are older. Better to wear a more comfortable bra that fits properly.

feelingverylazytoday · 02/09/2020 20:38

I wear those stretch crop tops, worn them for about 8 years. Similar to these tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/p/DD%2B-Black-Seamless-Stretch-Crop-Top-/136756616-Black?searchTerm=:newArrivals&searchProduct=
I have a few with thin bra straps for the summer because I like to wear vest tops, but they're essentially the same thing.
They're very comfortable, but I must be honest my boobs looked better in proper underwired bras, especially because I'm short waisted . That's not a problem for me, but other people might prefer the look of a proper bra.

bornninthe80s · 02/09/2020 20:51

I'm 40. I wear the GAP training bra type things 🤣 I hate bras and always have, luckily not big boobed so sort of got away with it (or so I think - nobody's ever pointed it out before. Excuse the pun!)

Kaiserin · 02/09/2020 21:11

YANBU
Comfort!

I moved from underwired bras with clips in the back, to soft bras with no clips (you put them on like a t-shirt) a few years ago, and never looked back.

During lockdown I just stopped wearing bras. Now I only wear them if I have to physically go to the office (only happened once, I'm mostly work from home), or if I have an important Zoom meeting.
I no longer bother with bras when going shopping etc. I may wear them for a special event, I guess, if I'm all dressed up.

Covert19 · 02/09/2020 21:13

Another convert to stretchy crop tops here. And big knickers. I love my underwear now.

paddingtonbearsmarmalade · 02/09/2020 21:16

In lockdown 99% of the time I’ve been wearing Calvin Klein bralettes. I’m currently hovering around a 34KK (I’m losing weight so it’s literally changing every month!) and wear an XL in the bralettes. They’re very comfy (though hand wash only).

51Pegasusb · 02/09/2020 21:17

Sloggi's zero feel, best thing ever ! Same as pp discovered them a couple of years ago I'll never wear a normal bra again..

Trisolaris · 02/09/2020 21:19

Not true. Wearing a bra is actually more likely to cause sagging and sooner than not wearing a bra as it weakens the breast muscle through constant support.

I’ve stopped wearing them (other than to work) and I’m not flat chested. I’ll keep em perky as long as I can!

I wear these too, very comfy! I put them in the washing machine because I am reckless... They seem to cope ok, even when DH washed one at 60 😡
