To stop wearing a bra?

Am over 40 now and I’ve never liked bras. I’ve had fittings but I still find them so uncomfortable to wear. Has anyone else given up on bras and do you have links to anything that is good to wear instead?

Molke are amazing non wired bras that actually support large breasts (I'm a 30J) and still give a nice shape under clothes.

WhoAmIWhoAreYou · 02/09/2020 21:31

I'm a 36F. The only time I dont wear a bra, is at home. My breasts are too big and jiggle a lot without support. Haha.

Plussizejumpsuit · 02/09/2020 21:44

I stopped wearing wired bras 2 years ago. Can't be arsed. I'm a 40 f and have a theory that bras are more uncomfortable as your boobs are bigger! Do don't wear one if you don't want to but there are loads of comfy options too.

BiBabbles · 02/09/2020 22:33

YANBU, I gave up on them years ago during my first pregnancy, found myself far more comfortable and never looked back.

Also, the things did little to hide my nipples unless I bought the really ridiculously thick ones so I tend to just wear layers - a shirt plus an overshirt layer is all I need, and I find I look more coordinated and put together than what I wore before.

RainbowFlowers · 02/09/2020 22:40

Please please can we start a braless movement? I wish it was socially acceptable to not wear a bra.

TrippTop · 02/09/2020 22:46

I’m in ! Ive gone through endless sizes and styles and I still can’t find comfortable bras, I’ve been pretty much bra less most days throughout lockdown and it’s been sooo comfortable.

UnaCorda · 02/09/2020 22:53

My problem is I find the side of breast get very sore from it digging in I've bought non wired bras but nothing helps.

That sounds like the cup size is too small, or something else is wrong with the fit.

Trumpetpants · 02/09/2020 22:56

Comfort is everything, but I would stand on my nips without underwired bra 😂😂

SummerPoppies · 02/09/2020 23:19

I haven't worn a bra for around 30 years, despite being a double figure cup.
I wear a silky cami top under my clothes.
A female manager once suggested that i wore a bra at work. I suggested that she got that rod out of her arse.
If you don't want to wear a bra then don't. I can't recall it being written in law that they are to be worn.
Set yourself ( and your chebs ) free.

Sunshiney1981 · 02/09/2020 23:28

YANBU at all.
I stopped wearing underwired bras last year and now wear either nothing or a comfy crop top or non wired bralette. Am only a B cup though.
If you look around I think they’re becoming more and more popular too.
Calvin Klein
M&S
Sloggi
Saw some gorgeous lace bralettes in Jack Wills the other day even.
Apparently it’s quite unhealthy to have wire pressing onto delicate breast and surrounding tissue all day and i even read that metal wires can increase the amount of electro magnetic waves your body absorbs!
If they aren’t reasons to give up wires I don’t know what are.

Fifthtimelucky · 03/09/2020 07:25

This is a very helpful thread. I'm nearly 60 and am moving over to crop tops but struggling a bit to find anything I really like.

The Sloggi ones look interesting but I would prefer a more natural fibre: ideally would find something with a high proportion of cotton or bamboo.

The only difficulty I have with sports type bras is that I currently have a shoulder injury and they can be difficult to get on and off!

mrsswayze · 03/09/2020 07:28

Unaconda the non wired bra seems the perfect fit as it sit perfectly where it's meant to. Maybe I should go up a back size. I was about crying at work the other night. I actually took it off but was so uncomfy my nips were rubbing of my nurses uniform I put it back on . I ordered some Braletts last night.
Question for anyone who's bought the Sloggi zero feel, amazon reviews said they were. Not true to size ? What do you think?

daisypond · 03/09/2020 07:34

It can be worth looking at post-surgery bras. No underwires, often front fastening. M&S have a decent selection.

FippertyGibbett · 03/09/2020 07:43

I ditched the wire a year or so ago and now wear the t-shirt bras from M&S.
I couldn’t go without a bra and I find these comfy.

Levrierssontmeilleurs · 03/09/2020 07:44

I buy from Royce Lingerie- all non wired bras & a good selection

QueenofLouisiana · 03/09/2020 07:46

A shoulder injury means I can only wear a bra if DH is around to help me dress. I’m in crop tops and Bralettes too.
Thank you to those who have posted recommendations here, I’d like some nicer ones now I have realised this may be how things are for the long term.

Sunshiney1981 · 03/09/2020 08:17

@Fifthtimelucky
Have a look at ASOS.
If you type in ‘organic cotton underwear’ you’ll see a good selection of organic cotton bralettes some which have back fasteners.

Fifthtimelucky · 03/09/2020 08:19

Thanks @Sunshiney1981 I'll do that.

Aweebawbee · 03/09/2020 08:58

I'd love to not wear a bra. I'm not particularly large or saggy, it's just the nipple issue. Crop tops and light support options just don't cut it in that department.

Yippeeforme · 03/09/2020 09:28

I stopped wearing a bra for a year once. I found the main issues were a) nipples rubbing against fabric of my tops and getting sore, and b) said nipples looking terribly obvious through clothes.

I have since stitched to wearing Sloggis and I love them, I'll never wear a normal bra again if I can help it.

AndreaTwo · 03/09/2020 16:31

I've never been more than a B cup(except when pregnant) and rarely wear an ordinary bra nowadays, preferring bralettes / crop tops from Sloggi and Cotton Traders.

MiddlesexGirl · 03/09/2020 16:33

Give me a nice comfy underwired bra every time Grin
Beats me what you lot are wearing .... or maybe it's the fitting that's wrong, but bras should make you more, not less, comfortable.

TooMinty · 04/09/2020 12:57

I'm not keen on my nipples showing (not sure why, socialised to think it's "improper" or something...). The Calvin Klein crop tops I wear have light padding which stops nipples showing through. Think they are called "modern bralette lift bustier".
