Cordless vacuum cleaners - AIBU to think they're just a bit shit?

I bought a Vax blade earlier in the year and for the first couple of months was pretty impressed but it's now on the verge of pointless! No real sucking power and when you turn it off, anything you have managed to vacuum up just spills out as it doesn't quite manage to reach the 'dirt store' bit in the body. Has anybody has a cordless which lasted and kept its power?

I've got to now retrieve 'the beast' from under the stairs and plug it in!

Ooh, I might have a look at that thread Glitterbiscuits

I've seen some of the Roomba cat videos - couldn't imagine my cat doing that in a million years! I got him a toy fish filled with catnip which flapped when it was touched and he nearly crapped himself!

I bought a Shark Liftaway and gave away the Vax cordless.

We have a cordless Dyson after the old upright one stopped working, I agree it's definately not as good and I miss my upright.
It doesn't clean edge to edge like the upright and the tools are stored on the charging station so if I've only taken the main part upstairs I end up running down to grab the bits I need.
I've kept my old Dyson in the shed and am so tempted to buy a reconditioned motor and get it repaired.

ladyvimes · 02/09/2020 17:10

I agree OP! I have a cordless dyson and it’s good for a quick run round but I still resort to my Henry if I want a deeper clean!!

TheresNothingIWantMore · 02/09/2020 17:12

If it worked well at first but now isn't I think it may be in need of a good service. I know you said you've checked a couple of bits but have you washed the filters and cleaned the rollers? I have to do MINE (G-Tech air ram) every few months and it's a pain but after it's like new again.

Fartleking · 02/09/2020 17:13

We recently got a Dyson V11 cordless after having a compact Dyson canister. I LOVE it. No lugging a gigantic hoover up stairs, I can just grab it from the cupboard and hoover up a little spill or do the whole house. DS, who is 9, can clean up his spilled rice crispies. It did cost an arm and a leg but I wouldn't go back to a corded hoover now.

YankeeDad · 02/09/2020 17:21

I have read that the Dyson Cordless is painfully loud, much more so than a corded vac. For those of you who have a Dyson, do you notice that?

HoomanMoomin · 02/09/2020 17:23

I know you said you checked, but I’m 99% sure there’s a blockage somewhere. My Beldray cordless for £65 is still going strong and it’s been 10 months.
The only times it had problems like that was when something got stuck. Usually at the place where the pipe thing is connecting to container. The worst culprits are sweet wrappers and pieces of paper.

ladykuga · 02/09/2020 17:32

I have a vax blade and really like it. I've found that washing the filters every couple of months improves the performance. Have you tried that?

whatsnext2 · 02/09/2020 17:33

Dyson cordless less powerful and tiny dust container. Even the corded now have reduced dust containers for some reason compared to previous models.

LakieLady · 02/09/2020 17:38

@TheresNothingIWantMore, I didn't know you had to wash the filters on the G-Tech!

I'd better tell DP, I've delegated G-Tech maintenance to him. Grin

I love my G-Tech, it's so light I half expected it to be crap, but it's brilliant. I inadevertely hoovered up a small turd the other day when I mistook it for a dead leaf, and it's still fine.

(I think said turd had stuck to dog's fur and then dropped off on the kitchen floor, we don't routinely have turds lying around - my housekeeping's shoddy, but not that shoddy!)

timeforawine · 02/09/2020 17:41

I have the Tineco pure one s12 and it's brilliant. So happy with it

CCSS15 · 02/09/2020 17:45

I have the shark cordless anti hair wrap and its fabulous - have a corded miele and its not been out of the cupboard since the arrival of the shark

MayDayFightsBack · 02/09/2020 17:46

I vowed never to buy a corded Dyson again about ten years ago after having had two break after just a couple of years' use and knowing the same thing had happened to friends and family. Everyone I know became disillusions with them. I became a Miele convert instead. However, when the cordless Dysons came out I fell for the hype and bought two - one for upstairs and one for downstairs. For a while I was evangelistic about them even though they are a pain in the arse to empty. But now both of them have broke in less than two years as well. We don't have a particularly messy house, either - no children, just a couple of cats - so I can't say either of them have been misused in any way. I think Dyson products are innovative but they are very expensive and they just don't last long enough to justify the price. I'm going to be looking into the Sharks next time. In the meantime, the corded Miele is still going strong after ten years.

MayDayFightsBack · 02/09/2020 17:47

*disillusioned not disillusions

MayDayFightsBack · 02/09/2020 17:48

Argghh! Broken not broke.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 02/09/2020 17:48

The vax is shit. The GTech is great and the Shark is brilliant. The rest really are a bit pants!

SimonJT · 02/09/2020 17:50

I have two, a shark cordless and a eufy robot vac. They both cope well with dust etc, but also with human, cat and dog hair. The anti hair wrap on the shark is brilliant.

lanbro · 02/09/2020 17:52

I've got a Shark cordless, love the fact the batteries are separate and replaceable as the battery was the problem with my previous Dyson V8 but no real solution other than buy a whole new vacuum!

Light enough for the kids to use, fab suction so great on cat hair, I just love it! Well worth £350

TrickyD · 02/09/2020 18:12

@Glitterbiscuits

Come and look at us all on the Eufy robot vacuum thread! We are like groupies.

I've had mine a week and love it.

Yes, come and join the cult. It’s here
TheresNothingIWantMore · 02/09/2020 18:15

@lakielike you're supposed to replace them but I just wash them and they've lasted years! 🤣 They do smell a bit when wet and take ages to dry though!

Redbirds · 02/09/2020 18:28

I have a Dyson V 11 and love it. I've never enjoyed vacuuming so much, it's not noisy, lightweight and bends easily under furniture. It was expensive but money well spent imo.

Spodge · 02/09/2020 18:28

My husband has some Makita tools, therefore the battery charger. We now have a Makita handheld vac upstairs and one downstairs and one in the garage.

Trailing1 · 02/09/2020 18:31

We have a shark anti hair weapon cordless. It was a let down. It just felt so top heavy.

TiddleTaddleTat · 02/09/2020 18:36

Same here - Bosch Anthlet. To be fair it's over 2 years old but the battery hardly charges now and it deposits crap all over the house. Just bought a corded model instead.
