Which days are you taking off at Xmas?

Looks like I'll be off 18th Dec to 3rd of Jan - seems a bit too long if anything!

I don't have kids so I'm tempted to spend less time off at Xmas and squeeze in a quick holiday somewhere (taking all the necessary precautions of course)

I'm planning to go to Ireland for Christmas, so will need to quarantine for 14 days before I can stay with my mum. I've not seen her since last Christmas. So I'm going to fly on 29th Nov., and take the month of December and beginning of January off. I'll probably work 'from home' a bit while I do the quarantine - not much else to do if I can't go out - and then take three weeks of holidays from 14 Dec. to 3rd Jan. Hopefully will be able to catch up with friends and relatives then too.

TheGreatWave · 02/09/2020 13:22

Office is usually closed between Christmas and New Year, so have to take it off.

Pre children I happily worked in between when I worked elsewhere.

Reythemamajedi · 02/09/2020 13:25

Two weeks and already booked it. I cut my holiday short at the request of my manager as she thought my colleague was away and we can't both be off at the same time. He's only taken one day and is back at work today Hmm so I'm taking the full 2 weeks at Christmas.

BiddyPop · 02/09/2020 13:25

It looks like I will be under significant work pressure at that stage, but we are only officially off the bank holidays. So I will probably take a few days - I usually turn up for a couple of hours on Christmas Eve rather than taking the whole day off as leave (the office is only open for the morning but if you don't go in, you need to use a full days' leave).

I will take the whole following week off, to travel to see family (if allowed) in this country but a few hours from me. And to take some time off and relax.

But I will keep an eye on my emails throughout (as I normally do), and may well be back working from 3rd, and possibly do a few things while I am off just to manage the work load on return.

QueenPaws · 02/09/2020 13:27

Finish half day on Christmas Eve, back in on the 27th

QueenPaws · 02/09/2020 13:28

Oh actually 27th is a Sunday so back in on the 28th (car dealership)

Lurkingforawhile · 02/09/2020 13:32

This year I've decided to ask for 21-24 off, because I really like the build up and it's my OH and Dad's birthday in that period. It means I'll have to take a whole days annual leave for the 24th, whereas if you work it you get half day off. But I get plenty of leave so not a concern. I usually quite enjoy working between Christmas and New Year as we get lots of clearing out done, but unlikely to be in the office this year.

Purplequalitystreet · 02/09/2020 13:35

I'm off from 22nd-2nd Jan, although I'll probs my do one day from home between Christmas and New year. DP is working christmas day so we're having "fake christmas" on the 24th. Can't wait!

Hadjab · 02/09/2020 13:36

Pretty much all of it as I’m being made redundant 🤣

emmathedilemma · 02/09/2020 13:40

We close offices (which aren't even open at the moment!) between Christmas and NY but i'm taking the 2 weeks finishing on the 18th, back on 5th Jan (we get the 2nd as a Bank Hol so that will roll over to the 4th as it falls on a weekend). i find working closer to Christmas just leaves me burnt out and it's deadly quiet and nothing much happens which should make it appealing to work but it's not when you just want to finish up!

ThatDamnScientist · 02/09/2020 13:47

I'm a SAHP/carer but DH works in retail and finishes after his shift on xmas eve (4pm) and then doesnt go back until 6th January. We have a 5 year old so it is quite nice.

TeeniefaeTroon · 02/09/2020 13:48

We finish on the 18th and back on the 5th January. Can't wait!

Milkshake54 · 02/09/2020 13:51

I hope to finish on the 18th December and won’t be back in until Jan 2022 as I’ll be off on maternity! Yipeeee

MulticolourMophead · 02/09/2020 13:52

@TeeniefaeTroon

We finish on the 18th and back on the 5th January. Can't wait!
We also finish on the 18th, and some of us are back on 2nd. My employer is closing everything down for the period.
boredboredboredboredbored · 02/09/2020 13:57

I'm a nurse and volunteered to do Christmas Day 10 hours but some kindly colleague has offered instead. Looks like I'll have the major days off woohoooo!

MrsMonkeyBear · 02/09/2020 14:03

I'll probably have Christmas Eve and Day off but only because I'm on set days at work and have every Thursday and Friday off. Although I'll probably be dragged in on new year.

WhoAmIWhoAreYou · 02/09/2020 14:07

@DinoTeam

Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Retail unfortunately Sad
This is me too. 😒
rottiemum88 · 02/09/2020 14:16

Finish at lunchtime on Christmas Eve, back on 4th Jan. Normally take longer over Christmas but we didn't do much with the extra time last year and I can use my holiday days better elsewhere 🤷🏼‍♀️

Backtoreality1 · 02/09/2020 14:54

1/2 day on 24th then back in on the 4th Jan - can't wait!

gabsdot45 · 02/09/2020 15:37

I work part time and because of the way the bank holidays fall I'll finish up on Tues 22nd and go back on Mon Jan 4th and I only have to take a half day annual leave.
Ya me!!!

Sakalibre · 02/09/2020 15:42

*Please be kind to those working over Christmas, not just in retail, and don't treat them as if you are some kind of entitled person"

Why does this need to be said?

OP posts:
AlrightTreacle · 02/09/2020 15:45

We can't book annual leave over Christmas/New Year (nurse), we give our preference for which specific day we'd like to have off over the festive period and usually get it, mine is Boxing Day (fingers crossed). I usually book a week off in Feb and go on holiday then, definitely helps with the winter blues!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/09/2020 15:45

I finish on the 23rd and go back on the 4th. Standard in my industry, we always close over Christmas.

GreyGardens88 · 02/09/2020 15:46

I don't know yet, I'm starting a new job next week and don't know what their policy is. Ideally I would like to have the 23rd and 24th off, not bothered about the days in between

whirlwindwallaby · 02/09/2020 15:48

Christmas eve, then Christmas to New Year, compulsory.
