Dressing gown

Maybe more WWYD but still, am I unreasonable to wear what I want at home without judgement?
My Stepdaughters maturnal Grandma likes to turn up at our house unannounced if no one answers the phone to her instantly. (DSD lives with us)
It's the 4th time she's commented on me answering the door wearing my dressing gown calling me lazy amongst other things but she says it all in a jokey way so I'm never sure how to answer.
I'm at the point that I dont even want to answer the door anymore, I have anxiety and she's making me feel self concious about it. Am I the only person who wears their dressing gown other than around bedtime? Would you just take it off before answering or would you tell her to get stuffed being so judgy?

I'd be tempted to answer the door in my coat and tell her I was just on my way out, sorry.

Or 'yes, I'm about to have a bath so it's not convenient right now'.

AlrightTreacle · 01/09/2020 13:20

I love dressing gowns and have a few, put a "summery" on after I've showered in the morning while I'm getting ready, and a cosy one I put over my clothes if I'm cold in the evening, I'd take it off to answer the door if I didn't know who it was, though I get changed into lounge wear pretty much straight away when I get home in the evening and not going out again, so she'd probably think I'm lazy for that Grin

Wear what you want in your own home.

IamMaz · 01/09/2020 14:17

I often [very often!] wear my dressing gown around the house during the day, if I don't have to go out. It's very old and is grey. [Bit like me actually!]
It is known by all as my 'sack'!!! I used to wear it outside on Thursday evenings when we clapped the NHS. It's comfy and I like it.

AryaStarkWolf · 01/09/2020 14:20

I don't wear a dressing gown but I wear PJs/lounge clothes as soon as I get home from work (bra is the first thing to be whipped off :p ) It's not laziness it's comfort

Florencex · 01/09/2020 14:25

I don’t wear a dressing gown ever. However when I am at home I am invariably in some kind of loungewear and I also have a couple of dresses that I wear around the house but I would never go out in. I call them my “house dresses”.

Brieminewine · 01/09/2020 14:28

You need a ring doorbell, problem solved!

Mediumred · 01/09/2020 14:50

Christ, that is so rude! If it’s her maternal grandma then she is only getting to see her when she’s with you on your sufferance so she should be bloody polite, not marching round unannounced and then making you feel bad about how you dress in your own home!

Yup, if she carries on I would just start telling her it’s not convenient! (On another note my beautiful and glam colleague whose fashion sense I always admired told me she had bought some lovely Zsa Zsa Gabor-style robe-like dressing gowns to work from home in, not saying you have to go that far but it shows that all the best people are rocking the dressing gown look at the mo!)

Backtoreality1 · 01/09/2020 14:53

I wouldn't wear a dressing gown or lounge wear beyond one or two hours before bed, or when I am just up, but thats my preference. Everyone should feel free to choose to wear what makes them happy :)

TeaOneSugar · 01/09/2020 14:59

I wear PJs or leggings and a T-shirt (which is basically the same thing) when I'm home for the evening and not expecting anyone, if it's chilly I'll have a dressing gown over the top. I have a winter one and a summer one, and I'll wear what I want in my own home, I'm in my 40s I'm not a child !!!!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 01/09/2020 15:06

The problem isn't the dressing gown, it's the cheeky fucker turning up at your house unannounced. Time to tell her to ring first and check it's convenient. Her behaviour is the equivalent of a dog pissing up a wall to mark it's territory.

WhateverThePace · 01/09/2020 15:08

I don’t wear a dressing gown in the daytime. Only first thing in the morning or last thing at night.

Why don’t you wear an oversized sweater or long cardigan if you’re cold?

She probably thinks you haven’t bothered to get dressed or showered.

NoemiaElara · 01/09/2020 15:11

I wear my dressing gown all year round when I'm at home. Sometimes wear it over my clothes if I'm cold!
I wouldn't answer the door to her to be honest.

MJMG2015 · 01/09/2020 15:17

I don't wear dressing gowns.

I'd find it odd to have someone answer the door in the middle of the day wearing one as to me they're a just got up or on my way to bed, type item.

I wouldn't think you were lazy though, I'd just be concerned I'd woken you ir that you weren't well.

HOWEVER, I live in leggings & t shirts & usually bra less, so she'd probably have something less than complimentary to say to me too.

The older I get the less I care what people think! I'd tell her to bugger off and make a proper arrangement to see DSD. (NOT at my house either) You have NO responsibility to enable your husbands ex wife's mother to see your DSD.

I'm sorry if his ex wife died, but it's still not your responsibility to host someone so bloody rude!

Biscuitbrew · 01/09/2020 15:18

Well it's lovely to know I'm not the only one Smile

She doesn't even come inside our home, she's banned lol. She will call our phones but if we're busy or not in the mood for her she just turns up, she doesnt even come to take DSD out she just comes to get answers she didnt get on the phone instead of waiting! Think some new boundaries need setting.

I have 3 dressing gowns so it's a toss between wearing all 3 next time she turns up or I'll get a cheap ball gown from a charity shop that I can quickly slip into before opening the door Grin

I'll often put my dressing gown on in the evening if it's a bit chilly. Wouldn't dream of commenting if one of my friends was in their dressing gown when I dropped in!

Next time she comments just say ”how rude”

TheQueef · 01/09/2020 15:19

I wear one every day on top of clothes or PJs.
As I've aged I noticed if you call it a housecoat it becomes acceptable.
So now I always wear a housecoat or day robe.

(Still get called the Dude but I admittedly wear my day robe o ut)

Irelate · 01/09/2020 15:22

Have been known to walk the dog - just walking a few houses along and back - in my beloved dressing gown Blush

Biscuitbrew · 01/09/2020 15:22

She even made a snide comment when I had just got out of the shower and had a towel wrapped around my head!
New door bell and special outfits by the door I think Grin

Why should she? She's in her own bloody home!
Geppili · 01/09/2020 15:30

Dressing gowns are daywear here. Next time answer her in the nude. 🤣

canyoucallbacklater · 01/09/2020 15:33

Next time you answer the door just have one boob dangling out.

Draw absolutely no attention to it and if she points it out, look down, laugh and continue.

Guarantee she will never knock again.

Zaphodsotherhead · 01/09/2020 15:34

I WFH in the mornings, in fact I work in my bed.

I wear PJ bottoms and a kind of hoodie thing, so that if I have to answer the door you can't really tell whether I've just got out of bed or whether I'm just wearing 'informal' clothes. I am paranoid about people thinking I lie in bed all day (I really and truly am working, honestly!) so I had to ditch the dressing gown in favour of 'guess whether I've been asleep or grafting for three hours' clothes.

BaronessBomburst · 01/09/2020 15:35

I think the key here is that she's DP ex's mother. Whatever you do will be wrong. Grin

Elieza · 01/09/2020 15:35

@geppilli Answering the door in the nude - love it - that would certainly put her off turning up unannounced, ha ha 😂

Iwantacookie · 01/09/2020 15:38

I'm in my dressing gown right now Grin I've been working in the garden all morning so came in had a shower and put my pjs on too. Ide answer the door like this, if people have an option they can tell my closed front door.
