To not be sad that my dc are going back to school?

So this morning my Facebook feed is full of gushy posts from parents saying how sad that they’re kids are going back to school this week and how much they will miss them. AIBU to think get a grip you’ve had you’re kids home for the last six months? I’m a mum to 2 dc, one teen and my youngest who’s almost 10 and is autistic. Now don’t get me wrong we have had some for days since they finished school in March and we managed a weekend away last week which was nice, but on the whole it’s been very hard for us all. I can’t wait for my kids to get back to school/college yet I get the feeling I’m in the minority?

Mine goes back tomorrow. She's 9. I'm not sad, exactly, but she doesn't want to go back - she's loved being around me for all this time. It's been really, really bloody difficult, don't get me wrong, but part of me has loved it too.
I think once she's back she'll be happy but I'm a bit anxious about what the term will bring.
A big mix of emotions, I guess.

Everyone is different. Some people are genuinely sad. Some can't wait. Some are mixed.

I am very definitely in the can't wait camp!

I think working parents and SAHP/furloughed parents might be a big divider on this one. It has been very hard to enjoy lockdown if you are trying to work and look after children at the same time, and it's not really fair to treat the two things the same. Similarly, if you love your job and see it as a big part of your identity, being furloughed can be really hard. OTOH, if you hate your job, being furloughed could be amazing!

I wouldn't assume people are lying (though some might be), I'd just chalk it up to people are different. I'm always pleased when I see people talk about how much they love being at home with their kids, because I hated it, and I'm relieved that SAHPs are having a better time than I would have done.

Nah, most people I know are happy their kids are going back and the kids seem happy too.

Not a single parent I know ha expressed that sentiment! Either glad to get shot of them or just happy that their education will be re-starting...

Grannyspecsandslippers · 01/09/2020 22:18

I mean, it’s not like I don’t see them before 8.30 and after 3pm everyday and all weekend even when they’re in school. The little darlings...

Mine is 14. I feel I have had the opportunity to spend time with her and get to know her that I would never have had. I have loved the time with her and I will miss the time together. However, I am happy she will resume normal and it is healthy she does so and is excited about it. But no, I am not desperate for her to go back, it has been lovely spending this time with her, despite the stressful bits.

Mine are going back on Thursday and we are all looking forward to it... I love my children but the past 6 months have been really hard. My DD needs the social element of school, DS needs the structure and discipline of the classroom environment. And I need to get back to work for my own sanity.

DragonPie · 01/09/2020 22:30

I’m not sad, they need to go back. I need them to go back. They need to see their friends. I’ve got a day off work tomorrow and I am so looking forward to some time by myself. Then I’ll be glad to see them at 3.30pm.

megletthesecond · 01/09/2020 22:30

Yanbu.
While I am very worried about what covid may bring I am still glad they should be at school for a while. I'm utterly sick of feeding them tbh.

TheClitterati · 01/09/2020 22:31

We've mostly had a nice time. Challenging in parts & full on as I work ft / so over reliance on screens etc.

I am counting the minutes until my dc are back at school & they are both really looking forward to it too.
