To hate the idea of masks as a fashion accessory

I'm not anti-mask - just thought I should say that. Just no, though to masks that match outfits and "designer" masks - I saw some on a jewellery website for £35!

Why?

I can't see what is wrong with people putting together an outfit with a matching mask.

Florencex · 31/08/2020 19:09

I can’t remember where I saw it, I think on another forum, but somebody posted a link to a face mask costing £80!

Nquartz · 31/08/2020 19:10

There was a photo on the homemade masks thread of.One made out of the same fabric as a dress, I think it looked nice. If I have to wear one i 'd rather it looked nice!

Imissmoominmama · 31/08/2020 19:11

If it helps people to feel ok about wearing them, it’s fine by me! Mine are charity ones, with the logo emblazoned over the front. I think it doesn’t matter what they look like, as long as they’re making other people feel safe.

Nquartz · 31/08/2020 19:11

But the most ive spent on one is £3, I'm not insane Grin

BlackberrySky · 31/08/2020 19:11

We will be wearing them for a while so whatever helps people embrace them is a good thing in my opinion. I have several masks that match my outfits - they make me feel more put together, how I used to be pre-lockdown. Personally I would never pay an extortionate amount for a designer one, but then again I don't buy designer clothes either.

KeyWorker · 31/08/2020 19:12

I’ve got mostly black masks for just this reason... they go with everything!! I personally wouldn’t spend £35 on a mask but if someone can afford it, that’s their business.
As for them being a fashion accessory, I think they will be around for a while so if someone wants accessorise their outfit with a matching mask, why not.

NameChange84 · 31/08/2020 19:13

I’m ok with it. Feels like making the most of a
shitty situation and if you’ve got the money why? I like that some people wear novelty ones too.

NameChange84 · 31/08/2020 19:13

Why not, I mean!

itsgettingweird · 31/08/2020 19:16

My aunt makes them.

I wear a lot of pink.
She made me some fab pink ones in different material.

Flowery, Disney, patterned.

I've been joking it's the fashion accessory if 2020!

I also have others o have bought.

3 black, a blue, a red and a purple.

Have to admit I do colour co ordinate Blush

NeverTwerkNaked · 31/08/2020 19:20

I don't mind what mask people wear, it just feels good to see people going to the trouble of wearing them

Cattiwampus · 31/08/2020 19:20

If they become an accessory, more people will wear them, particularly younger adults. Which is great.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 31/08/2020 19:22

I have a handful of cotton ones, different patterns and colours, pls some nylony black ones.
I probably pay less attention if it's going to be 5 minutes in the supermarket, but I choose a mask that vaguely coordinates with my outfit if I'm going to be wearing it for a longer period of time.
With the coloured ones i chose colours that go with a lot of my clothes

somm · 31/08/2020 19:23

This was a thing on Jeremy Vine last week (C5); as in, people shouldn't be wearing anything other than a plain mask because it's trivialising the virus and making people forget how serious it is. I have a few masks, a couple of them Liberty print made by someone who has her own small business operating from her home. I also have a mask that says 'This is not normal' on a black background. The other one from the same company says, 'My Dog For President'. I would argue that having a mask with words on, when the words are 'This is not normal', is emphasising the mask wearing, reminding us that's what we need to do it at the moment. Okay, 'My dog for President' is trivial, but even my idiot would do a better job.

Madre1972 · 31/08/2020 19:25

Why? What’s the impact it has on you?

My daughter is 12, she loves her fashion and Covid has already massively negatively impacted this year for her. If a mask that matches her outfit or her mood makes things a bit easier for her then I don’t care one jot if it bothers a random on Mumsnet.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 31/08/2020 19:31

Really

I suppose its true

Dh working from home
Dd not taking her A levels
Ds2 having no college for months
Social distancing
Not being able to see my friends
Staying apart from my dad
Queues in shops
MN with a special covid board
Lockdown

But the second i put my nice flowery mask on and I forget just how serious a pandemic is

(Sarcasm by the way)

Ghostlyglow · 31/08/2020 19:36

I'm not really sure why it doesn't seem right, to be honest. That's a reason why I asked the question on here - I genuinely wondered if I was BU. Seems like I might be. Fair enough Smile

Looking forward to festive mask day instead of jumpers this Christmas 🎄

Sidewinder30 · 31/08/2020 19:52

They are something you are wearing. What possible objection could there be to making them fashionable? If it steers people away from disposables, all the better.

tabulahrasa · 31/08/2020 19:56

Well I’ve paid no more than about £4... but if I’ve got to wear them, I want ones I like, so I have ones made from sequin material, one with puppies on and one with dinosaurs on...

MoonriseKingdom · 31/08/2020 19:57

A bit like singing hopeful songs during wartime (we’ll meet again) if it makes someone feel a bit better when we are all finding it tough why not. I don’t feel it trivialises anything. Rather more bothered by the many people who don’t seem to realise it needs to cover your nose and not just your mouth!

BadEyeBri · 31/08/2020 20:02

I've some nice animal print ones. I'm a vet.
