To hate the idea of masks as a fashion accessory

I'm not anti-mask - just thought I should say that. Just no, though to masks that match outfits and "designer" masks - I saw some on a jewellery website for £35!

I made them for all my family and a couple of friends. Everyone has their preferred colours and designs. I'd rather wear a cheerful mask than a black one, and someone asked me today where I had got mine as she liked the design. I've ordered some Christmas fabric, especially for my relations who have to wear masks to work.

I'm also contemplating this mask but not yet sure

It's really not a lot different to hospitals offering a choice of colours for plaster casts. Makes an unpleasant situation a bit better. I much preferred having a purple cast to a white one last year.

Unfortunately this thread has now led to me ordering two Christmas masks Hmm , something I never thought I'd want to do. But once the idea was put in my mind I had to Google: 'Are they available?' But, then, up until a couple of years ago, I never wanted to own a Christmas jumper, until some really nices ones started being available. I used to love decorating my house and all the stuff you associate with Christmas, and making Christmas special for family (although the sods never appreciated it enough to say thankyou). Now I don't have family to sit around my table on Christmas Day. But when I'm out in public over Christmas, enjoying my pub and restaurant visits, I feel part of it when I have an outward sign, 'Hey, it's Christmas!' I think my Christmas masks will have the same effect (although obviously I'd love it if I never had to use them.)

I love the idea of a Christmas Grinch mask! Nothing to scare small children too much with though Grin

wigglerose · 02/09/2020 21:31

I don't care as long as people wear them.

I thought of this thread whilst watching an item on the news last night. I think it was in France but they all had identical green disposable type masks on - it looked horrible!

devildeepbluesea · 03/09/2020 16:41

I think the whole idea of normalising wearing face masks is depressing and dehumanising. I accept the need to do it, and actually bought myself a 'decorative' one for when I have to wear it.

But I loathe the concept, what it will do to social interaction if it continues long-term and think that making them fashion accessories is just...wrong. So YANBU.

I think personalising masks is done to prevent them being dehumanising.

I genuinely don't find them dehumanising, less than sunglasses tbh.

wanderings · 03/09/2020 17:29

Yay! I've had an email that my mask is on its way, bearing the legend "Make 1984 fiction again".

devildeepbluesea · 03/09/2020 18:42

@ChanceEncounter you're probably right. It doesn't work though.
