To think MN is pitching Premium all wrong?

Every time I come onto MN I see ads for MN Premium. The clue is in the name - it’s a premium version of a service we currently get in exchange for being the subject of advertising. To actively start parting with my money for it, they need to offer me something special; something valuable. Yet the ad tells us very little about that. Instead, it tells us ‘Mumsnet needs your help’.

This is the kind of language I’d expect a charity or educational programme to use. It’s an appeal to help those who can’t help themselves. MN is not a charity - it’s a multi-million pound business. If they need more income, fine, start a premium service; but why pitch it as the chance to help some very rich people? Tell me why I should pay the service; what it will do for ME as a customer, not why MN wants/needs the money. It’s the equivalent of me going to my boss and saying ‘My mortgage payments have gone up and I’m planning to start a family, so I need a rise’. That might well be why I need the money, but it’s not why my boss should give it to me. I need to prove that I’m worth the money. MN needs to do the same.

Is it just me, or is this a total marketing failure and a complete misread of the mood of the audience?

Oh Polm, you must be minted! I had an ad in Japanese or Korean this morning. No idea what I was being sold, something to stick on your calf muscle I think.

It would be interesting to hear from some Premium members about whether they think it's worth the money and if they'd ever go back to non Premium.

ImaSababa · 31/08/2020 11:30

What literally happens if you get canned and you've ponied up for premium? Do they refund you?

ImaSababa · 31/08/2020 11:30

No they were very clear that there would be no refunds if a premium member was banned.

I subscribed because I started using the site a lot more in lockdown and it felt like the right thing to do. Its not much money to me and Im happy to support a site by women for women (mostly). And when I look at what else there is on the internet - twitter, reddit, facebook - those sites, their ethos, the morality they support, and their owners, make me nauseous. But I do agree it is more of a donation than anything else.

I routinely get that ad for Victoria Plum or similar with the strapline “Little shower victories” and a picture of a bloke who seems to be jerking off in the shower. Why on earth would I pay for Premium? Grin

AlternativePerspective · 31/08/2020 11:36

Do we know how many Premium members they actually have now?

TBH I think they had a bloody nerve asking for a hand-out during the pandemic when people were losing their jobs left right and centre and had no idea where the next pay cheque might be coming from.

And OP is right, it’s being touted exactly as a charity. After all, if you’re not getting anything in return, then giving them money is a donation, not the purchase of a service.

So why not just be up front and hold out the begging bowl....

Although I seem to recall that their salary bill alone was around £360k a month, no amount of premium members is going to cover that....

EssentialHummus · 31/08/2020 11:37

Ah, apparently his name is Ben.

I'm pretty sure they said there would be partial refunds.

So if for example you paid for 6 months or a year and got banned, they'd refund from the following month onwards.

notangelinajolie · 31/08/2020 11:41

I don't see many ads. I have a very rubbish slow phone so by the time the ad has loaded I'm long gone Grin

Smallsteps88 · 31/08/2020 11:42

I dont recall seeing that @WorraLiberty but there were lots of very long threads at the time so possible I’ve missed it. They definitely said at one point there would be no refunds so they must have had a rethink.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 31/08/2020 11:43

Hey. It's not fair!
My ad has a spelling mistake

Is anyone here actually a premium member and if so, what made you sign up and pay?

Anniegetyourgun · 31/08/2020 11:48

I bought it. Happy with it so far. Not been banned yet, but then again, I wouldn't be able to tell you what happened if I were...

KatherineOfGaunt · 31/08/2020 11:53

But the website for that ad says "battowels.art". So they're only for the bats, sorry!

I don't get any ads. May be that is because I don[t use MN on my mobile.

Didkdt · 31/08/2020 11:59

I just feel like the ability to speak freely on here has gone out thd window and I don't want to pay for that

Exactly.

The moderation is very poor at times especially on the feminist chat boards where perfectly legal and ok posts are deleted so as not to offend an insignificant minority.

Moderation elsewhere is very hit or miss and they consistently allow goady posts.

ColleagueFromMars · 31/08/2020 12:06

Also, it is a product that you can be banned from using for very little. Say something on here that men don't like and you will get a strike against your name. Three times and you are out. Wow, let me sign up for that!

This. I'm on two anyway for having the audacity to say things that autogynaephiles don't like.

Paying to keep one of the only places on the internet where we can discuss GC views without being hounded out I would absolutely do. But it stings to be asked to pony up when I'm one feminist post away from a ban 😑
