Is this message very rude? I think it is

In June we had a new window cleaner clean our windows inside and out and discussed more regular window cleaning every few months.

The window cleaner messaged to say he will come this week, I asked how much for outside only and he sent me the quote - £30. I felt like this was quite alot for outside windows (2 bed terrace house) so asked around and found £20 was about average with some paying less but £20 being an average amount that I'd be ok to pay.

I messaged back to say I thought it was alot and could he do for £20, no worries if not but £30 was too much for us right now so we would leave it.

He messaged back to say we had an agreement on price and frequency and that he thought I would keep my word, he then said 'I work hard to be reliable to all my clients and I expect the same from you'

I was pretty shocked, I appreciate he feels we had a verbal contract but he doesn't know my circumstances and I feel I asked a reasonable question, I do feel that he was over charging. As we had inside and outside last time I didn't recall discussing outside only cost even if I did I wanted to check and confirm so I could have the money ready.

Is his response rude or am I in the wrong here? I felt like I was being reprimanded by someone I've met once. Obviously now worried because he knows where I live and I hate confrontation!

Wow, is he using fine silk cloths and rose water to clean them? £30 for a 2 bedroom seems very expensive. We pay £12 for a four bedroom. Definitely find another window cleaner.

Alwaysoutofreach · 30/08/2020 10:54

I pay £10 😯 £5 fronts, £5 backs.
3 bed house, leaded windows and patio doors.

Alwaysoutofreach · 30/08/2020 10:55

Course he is being stroppy, he had the price of 3 houses from you

guessmyusername · 30/08/2020 10:57

3 bed semi £6 per month. Can't believe the price some of you pay. My dh was very reluctant to have a window cleaner and said he would do them himself. It is possible to do them all from inside. But when it became less than once a year I told him I was getting a window cleaner so I could see what the weather was like.

Piglet89 · 30/08/2020 10:57

@Pinkdelight3 we just inherited our window cleaner from the previous owners of our house! Guess we were lucky. Like a PP, we are in Zone 4 London and are paying half as much as she is for about half as many windows...so to paraphrase The X Files, the deals are out there!!!

ShandlersWig · 30/08/2020 10:59

£8 four bed detached.

He's stroppy because you've declined his rip off offer of £30.

Just delete and find another window cleaner.

SuckingDownDarjeeling · 30/08/2020 11:01

Does he replace the glass with crystal on each visit? Because if so then yes, YABU Grin

Alwaysoutofreach · 30/08/2020 11:01

Im London Zone 5, crazy prices on here, we pay slightly more because of the lead on the windows, or so he says

pinksunday · 30/08/2020 11:02

He's rude.

My old house was a 3 bed semi - we paid £5.

katy1213 · 30/08/2020 11:03

Don't enter into discussion with him. You're under no obligation to use his services. And yes, hugely over-priced.

Whatisthisfuckery · 30/08/2020 11:05

That message is appalling TBH. he’s effectively trying to shame/guilt you into paying his extortionate prices. £30 for a two bed end terrace? That’s outrageous. I pay a tenner for my two bed end terrace, windows on three sides, most of them full length.

I’d just message back saying not to bother, then block.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 30/08/2020 11:06

That's outrageous price. We were paying less than that for 4 stories and 13 windows

No you didn't agree to anything!

I'd just say... Thanks but no thanks. Repeat ad nauseum.

It's up to him to quote, it's up to you to agree or not.

Eckhart · 30/08/2020 11:09

Why does he presume he has the right to have expectations of you?

You won't be the only person he's treating this way. He's probably bullying others with less mettle into paying his extortionate prices.

Ellie56 · 30/08/2020 11:09

He's rude and a rip off. We pay £14 for a three bed semi that includes 2 large bay windows and an extension with French doors. Our window cleaner also wipes down the sills too.

CastleCrasher · 30/08/2020 11:09

Definitely don't use him, just ignore and move on. It's interesting seeing the huge variation in prices though! We pay £18 for a large detatched house with loads of windows, many of which are floor to ceiling. We previously had a guy who did it for £12 but he used a reach and wash system which wasn't as good and he broke my rose bush

he did tell us when he came last time that he uses purified water... maybe that's what I am paying for!!!

@Manolin

Even when they are wrong, the customer is always right. He has jeopardised future business from you at any price.
Exactly, you can't talk to (potential) clients like that, he didn't have to do it for £20 but he also didn't have to reprimand me like a child!
OP posts:
Veryverycalmnow · 30/08/2020 11:12

Ours charges £4 for doing outside and we always pay 5 as he does a good job. Are you in London? That seems expensive!

eatsleepread · 30/08/2020 11:13

Maybe just me, but I don't think he was particularly rude Confused
And you wouldn't use him now anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
The cost of window cleaning is regional, I think. It's eye-watering here in Edinburgh, but my mum pays a fiver for the outsides of her large family home in Paisley Grin
I daresay he wasn't impressed by being talked down by a third of the original price agreed, but I don't blame you for not wanting to pay it.
I will say though that windowcleaners do vary enormously in quality. The expensive ones are often better, and extremely busy.

ChaChaCha2012 · 30/08/2020 11:15

His reply was blunt, but you were rude. Would you try and barter at the supermarket? If not, don't do it to a small business either.

(The price is high, but many people willingly pay that much.)

ThousandsAreSailing · 30/08/2020 11:15

😮Definitely rude. I pay £5.50 for a regular clean outside. I have no idea how often as it's weather permitting and I just pay when they turn up. 4 bed semi including large patio doors

Whatisthisfuckery · 30/08/2020 11:15

Lol, purified water? Tap water then.

BunnyLovesBananas · 30/08/2020 11:16

What did you text him back OP?

You have said English is not his first language so it's very possible he didn't mean to be rude.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 30/08/2020 11:16

Rude. 'There is no formal agreement. I find you unprofessional and rude. Do not contact me again' and then delete.

daisypond · 30/08/2020 11:17

I can only dream of getting windows cleaned for £30... That is so, so cheap to me.
