To think pleated school skirts are sadistic and even potentially borderline misogynistic?!

Ok maybe slight exaggeration and definitely lighthearted but really, wtf - why, Why do that to us??! Hmm

I have an ironing phobia and - and I admit I have left this a bit late - am searching for school skirts for dd, and they almost All have pleats, many 10+ pleats! All the way round!! All the Jersey 'skater' style seem to be sold out in her size wherever I look (I am clearly not the only pleat-phobic parent out there by a long stretch)! Everytime I see a pleated effort i get flashbacks to my own school days when we had not just a few pleats in our skirts but a full on fucking kilt - so we're talking 50odd pleats - and my mum passed on the task as soon as she felt she decently could, so I think I am actually traumatised (in fact probably the source of the phobia, thinking about it).... Confused

The even worse element to this is A) dd Will Not wear trousers, and B) Rather likes pleated skirts (and Is Definitely too young to do her item ironing, unfortunately!) - Can anyone recommend some pleated skirts that really are permanent pleat, and virtually iron-free..??

Never ironed a pleated skirt in my life. Shake and hang.

I don't iron anything though

thereisonlyoneofme · 29/08/2020 10:35

The pleated all round ones dont need ironing. If they look a bit crumpled I just pleat them together a bit and stick clothes pegs on the bottom to weight them and hang up

Herja · 29/08/2020 10:36

Morrisons had all the uniform left yesterday btw. I bought DD jersy skirts then, they had them in most sizes.

I do not iron, indeed I specifically buy clothes that don't need ironing. Pleated school skirts don't need ironing - just a good shake and careful hanging.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 29/08/2020 10:38

They don’t need ironing. They are made from polyester which is essentially plastic. The pleats are heat set in place.

Bullatagate · 29/08/2020 10:41

DD has a pleated (all the way round) skirt for school. Its compulsory from the school supplier so no choice in the matter.
The highlight of lockdown was leaving the bastard thing in the ironing basket for 6 months!

diavlo · 29/08/2020 10:41

I love ironing pleated skirts, they look so neat and sharp afterwards.

kierenthecommunity · 29/08/2020 10:47

Dad had pleated pinafores which didn’t need ironing

How nice he was comfortable with his gender non conformity 😃😉

LonginesPrime · 29/08/2020 10:51

M&S or John Lewis ones are fine and keep their pleats - if you're having to iron all the creases back in, you're doing something wrong, OP!

Nanny0gg · 29/08/2020 10:52

I can't imagine that the fabric they're made from these days will need ironing!

Now back in the day when I had to make my PE kilt(!) in Domestic Science out of dreadful fabric that didn't hold the pleat and creased as soon as you looked at it...
My mum's solution was to iron it, roll it very carefully and put it in an old stocking to keep the pleats in!

So be very grateful for polyester!

Thecobwebsarewinning · 29/08/2020 10:55

Even back in the seventies our pleated school skirts/kilts weren’t ironed! Just hung out as described above. You’ve been making a rod for your own back OP.

rainbowlou · 29/08/2020 10:56

I used to hang my dd’s straight up and spray with a little fabric conditioner in water.

ittakes2 · 29/08/2020 10:56

I thought the point of pleated skirts was they have been pressed in such a way they don’t need ironing! I have never ironed our’s!

BertiesLanding · 29/08/2020 11:02

The thinking behind pleated skirts vs unpleated, is that the former have more material, and so don't gape when sitting cross-legged on the floor. Also they are much more difficult to roll up at the waist to shorten them. (I used to work for a schoolwear manufacturer.)

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 29/08/2020 11:06

god i had a pleated skirt myself.
what a nighmare ironing was

more polyester required

MsWonderful · 29/08/2020 11:09

Yy just hang up as soon as the wash has finished. If your machine has an easy care setting that will help too. I’ve recently started using mine and it really makes a big difference

seayork2020 · 29/08/2020 11:13

I don't remember my uniform being ironed, I iron my sons shirts but never his trousers

ThaGugaBlasta · 29/08/2020 11:15

Another school kilt wearer here. I thought the "sadistic" bit was how horribly unflattering they are on anyone with hips. And also the smell in wet weather...

actiongirl1978 · 29/08/2020 11:17

My daughter is 12 and has beem wearing pleats since age 3. Never ironed it once though i do iron all school blouses and shirts.

NoGinNotComingIn · 29/08/2020 11:19

My daughter has kilts, I just wash them and hang them up, job done.

JudgeRindersMinder · 29/08/2020 11:21

@JudgeRindersMinder

Dad had pleated pinafores which didn’t need ironing, like others I just hung it up when it came out of the washing machine and it was perfect
Dad really didn’t -not even a kilt even though we’re Scottish 😂😂 It was dd-honest!
sashh · 29/08/2020 11:22

Hang up on a hanger out of the washer and 'straighten' the pleats.

Tack the pleats before washing.

Get one of those skirts that are pleated all the way round with small pleats. Roll up around the waist band and put it in a stocking to wash and dry. It will look like a sausage.

Redwinestillfine · 29/08/2020 11:23

Why are you ironing school uniform?

BonfireStarter · 29/08/2020 11:30

Yabu, I've never ironed a school skirt they look great straight from drying. Buy the m&s ones.

Madcats · 29/08/2020 11:31

DD has had to wear a kilt at secondary and junior. Most kids ask to get them from the secondhand shop so that the pleats aren't as sharp!

I've always just washed the things and hung them up to dry immediately (pulling the pleats into shape at the hem if I can be bothered).

Byallmeans · 29/08/2020 11:32

You want to try ironing a wool kilt 😩
