To think pleated school skirts are sadistic and even potentially borderline misogynistic?!

Ok maybe slight exaggeration and definitely lighthearted but really, wtf - why, Why do that to us??! Hmm

I have an ironing phobia and - and I admit I have left this a bit late - am searching for school skirts for dd, and they almost All have pleats, many 10+ pleats! All the way round!! All the Jersey 'skater' style seem to be sold out in her size wherever I look (I am clearly not the only pleat-phobic parent out there by a long stretch)! Everytime I see a pleated effort i get flashbacks to my own school days when we had not just a few pleats in our skirts but a full on fucking kilt - so we're talking 50odd pleats - and my mum passed on the task as soon as she felt she decently could, so I think I am actually traumatised (in fact probably the source of the phobia, thinking about it).... Confused

The even worse element to this is A) dd Will Not wear trousers, and B) Rather likes pleated skirts (and Is Definitely too young to do her item ironing, unfortunately!) - Can anyone recommend some pleated skirts that really are permanent pleat, and virtually iron-free..??

Dad had pleated pinafores which didn’t need ironing, like others I just hung it up when it came out of the washing machine and it was perfect

FredaFrogspawn · 29/08/2020 10:03

As an aside - Girls need pockets.

Midsommar · 29/08/2020 10:04

I think "sadistic" is a bit OTT.
We're talking about skirts here, not Fred West

AltogetherAndrews · 29/08/2020 10:07

I refuse to iron anything, ever. Don’t even own an iron. Wash, tumble or line dry, wear, repeat. We have survived, and I don’t give a fuck if others judge. No one cares if your pleats are ironed.

CherryPavlova · 29/08/2020 10:08

A dry cleaner so like Johnson’s will usually do a permanent crease for very little cost.

Dahlietta · 29/08/2020 10:10

I'm sure nobody ever ironed my pleated skirts!

SantaClaritaDiet · 29/08/2020 10:11

The only thing that needs ironing are shirts, school or work. No way of hanging them can make them presentable.

Anything else really does not need ironing!

TitsOutForHarambe · 29/08/2020 10:11

Shake and hang while still wet. You're done. Reward yourself with a glass of wine.

Friendsoftheearth · 29/08/2020 10:14

Just hang them after washing, no need for ironing.

I like the skirts as they are so frumpy and granny like even my willowy beautiful 15 year dd looks like a sack of potatoes in it! Grin Perfect!
Unlike her mothers' school skirts that could be easily rolled I may add.

Skirts are cooler in the summer than trousers. There should always be a choice of either

BillywilliamV · 29/08/2020 10:14

tumble dryer, shake, hang, job done!

Grobagsforever · 29/08/2020 10:15

Also just tell the school to jog on with being so specific. So bored of schools thinking that get away with this bullshit.

AnnaMagnani · 29/08/2020 10:17

Are they not all made of polyester and come out with the pleats still in?

I had pleated school skirts back in the 90s and can guarantee my DM did not iron them. Cannot believe fabric quality has improved since then so they need ironing.

Saisong · 29/08/2020 10:18

I don't iron uniform at all (or anything in fact) - it all goes on hangers straight out of the wash and dries in place. I might give the pleats on skirts a quick tug to straighten then when wet, in the early days I did try the peg on each pleat thing - but life really is to short.

Rockbird · 29/08/2020 10:18

DD2 has to wear a particular pleated school skirt from the supplier. Thankfully it comes out of the washing machine almost dry and with perfect pleats!

DD1 on the other hand wears a pleated kilt. I ironed it the first couple of times and then gave up and it doesn't look any different.

Don't ever iron pleats!

Shangrilalala · 29/08/2020 10:20

DD has just finished school and I have had the glorious job of sending all her kilts to the uniform shop for resale. After 7 years, we are finally a pleat free house. (Never managed to do the drip dry perfect pleats thing, would have been a game changer here)

Zandathepanda · 29/08/2020 10:21

They are good as they are forgiving for sanitary pads and period stains.
They are also evil as there’s only so many times the designated school one could be not ironed before the skirt resembled a puffball skirt. 21 ours had. Bastard counted them.

Hoppinggreen · 29/08/2020 10:23

At DDs secondary they wear pleated skirts until Y10, then they used to go into awful pencil skirts that were cheap and nasty looking and not as easy to move it. From this year they can also wear the pleated ones throughout and DD (and me) are delighted - she can walk upstairs and sit on a chair more easily now!
Ironing them is a pain though

Zandathepanda · 29/08/2020 10:24

Also with COVID-19 they are a harbour of germs. As no one wants to wash them and tumble dry them (tumbling takes out the pleats) and it takes for ever for them to dry otherwise.

FinnyStory · 29/08/2020 10:26

The worst thing you can do to a pleated skirt is iron it!

Annabanana1234 · 29/08/2020 10:27

Markies non iron everything is fab but especially the pleated skirt. She’s happy because it’s what she wanted and I’m happy because I don’t need to iron it

CarrieFour · 29/08/2020 10:30

M&S ultimate skirt.

Permanent pleats. Stain resistant. And comes in a slim fit.

Best school uniform money I've spent!

I hang them on a hanger on the curtain rail straight from the machine. Dry great.

Peta11 · 29/08/2020 10:32

M&S pleated skirts have stay crease so don't need ironing! Just wash and hang!

Malbecfan · 29/08/2020 10:32

Pleated skirts look ok on all body shapes so I like them. DD1 is skinny and they looked fine on her. Plus she plays the cello and there was never any danger having to hitch up a straight skirt. DD2 has a more rounded figure and they flattered her. As a teacher, I rarely have to complain about skirt lengths. When some girls pre sixth form wore straight skirts in the past, it was an ongoing battle to keep them at a sensible length. I would argue that they are neither misogynistic nor sadistic and the OP needs to sort themselves out and iron them, get their DP too do it, or failing that teach their DD.

Happityhap · 29/08/2020 10:33

YABU to not consider trousers.

ATowelAndAPotato · 29/08/2020 10:33

We have M&S permanent pleats (with pockets), they get washed and tumble dried in the winter, no ironing required!
