To be really angry on behalf of teachers

Jessicabrassica · 29/08/2020 07:51

I know mumsnet loves a bit of teacher bashing.
I'm really angry that once again the Department for Education has put out guidance for schools in a Friday night before a long weekend with some schools having already started and others back next week.
I cannot imagine how many iterations of risk assessments have already been completed to make schools as safe as possible given the constraints of staff numbers, building size and requirements to get every child back in school.
They are getting enough PPE to tick the box that it's been issued to all schools but not enough to be useful.
Teachers mostly haven't stopped working since the pandemic began. They have continued to teach, to support vulnerable learners, provided meals and good parcels out of school funds in lieu of FSM, they remained open through school holidays for key worker provision.
I really feel that they have been well and truly fucked over, left massively vulnerable and will be left to carry the can for community outbreaks.

I'm a parent and work for the NHS if it's if any consequence.

Late changes are a pain because wvweyone wants everything ready on a monday at 9am, however late changes can mean it isn't but schools can't delay opening etc. However it is what it is and we will manage, yes education staff have said from the start this needs sorted and now it kind of has been.
Good luck on school returns, we are in Scotland so have been back for a few weeks and it is so good to have the kids in.

Now perhaps those in power can put their heads together to ensure all schools, and ataff, provide continuity of service to pupils should closures or part time school happen again. I daupport my fellow teachers and get annoyed reading the nasty comments and the choldiah we work harder /are better people than you type of thing on here. Reality is we have crap people in all jobs, teacging, nursing, government, shops etc. But having covered unpaid for some some staff who didn't work their hours during lickdown but are still the apple of the heads eye i would like to see all staff doing their job and no one picking up the pieces so others spend time with their kids whilst i leave mine alone.
Sorry rant over. Some workers during covid have been great some have been normal and some have been shit. Call out the shit ones not the whole profession.

Teacher bashers, the Daily Mail comments sections are that way >>>>>>>>>>

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 29/08/2020 17:37

@WhatamessIgotinto

I agree OP these people look after our children every day and yet we seem to have no care or respect for them at all!!

Yep. And they pass that attitude on to their precious little darlings too.

If there is one thing that pisses me off on MN it is that sneering 'precious little darlings' comment. I really hope you are not a teacher. Fuck right off with it.
ilovesooty · 29/08/2020 18:06

I might not use the "precious little darlings" comment but when I was teaching it was usually very apparent who had little respect for teachers and passed that attitude on to their children.

Least they're being given ppe not sure if you've noticed but all the factory workers across the country haven't stopped working either.

And have been working mostly without protections and dying at the highest rate.

Possibly not middle class enough to care about though.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 29/08/2020 18:14

Just updated my handy list again.

'Openly having hobbies and not having the decency to feel ashamed' (I'm paraphrasing), 'teachers need to play their part in society' Moaning', 'crack on', 'snowflakes', 'whining', 'get a grip', 'paid with our money', 'don't live in the real world', 'teachers just love to sodding moan', ‘Thank goodness nurses and doctors carries on without the same fuss.’, ‘our teAchers will close the school again at the drop of a hat.’ ‘If only teachers put as much energy into re-opening schools as they seem to complaining about how unfair it all is on them.’ ‘There has been no particular spreading of COVID in schools and no reason to be concerned ‘ ‘Shit at their jobs (and parents can do it better but we still want teachers to do it even though they’re shit).’ ‘gas lighting.’ ‘Some people just seem to want lockdown to last forever.’ ‘suffering major delusions’, ‘constantly whining about how they have it uniquely difficult.’ ‘refusal to even acknowledge that this has been going on’,
‘dereliction of duty to their pupils’, ‘actively mocking foster parents and vulnerable children’, ‘other people have got it worse so shut-up’,

Also lots around the theme of ‘I’ve been treated really badly at work, so why shouldn’t teachers be?’

I’ve seen at least three more examples of the last one.

Worth adding in full, as a fine example of it’s type:

‘Least they're being given ppe not sure if you've noticed but all the factory workers across the country haven't stopped working either.

And have been working mostly without protections and dying at the highest rate.

Possibly not middle class enough to care about though.’

@Isthisadaggerisee

‘What was this thread about again?’

OP feels sorry for teachers having more guidance to work around at short notice, some people agree, some people don’t and think teachers should just get on with it.

Did you read the title before you started posting?
Viciouslybashed · 29/08/2020 18:27

@Elsewyre shocking factory workers don't get ppe.

FrippEnos · 29/08/2020 18:37
@Elsewyre shocking factory workers don't get ppe.
Most have PPE, some are using SD.

Depends on the factory and industry.

WaltzfortheMars · 29/08/2020 18:42

HelloMissus, thanks. I hope they have better experience once the school starts.

itsgettingweird · 29/08/2020 18:53

Else I e noticed factory workers mentioned a lot as same conditions as schools on these threads.

I agree. They should also get and obviously need better protections.

Who do they contact to get that from? Is there a union?

It's so clear from evidence they are also 'super spreader ' environments.

HelloMissus · 29/08/2020 18:57

waltz I think it’s going to be fine.
They’ll be returning to their old schools with pupils they know.

SaltyAndFresh · 29/08/2020 19:35

My DF has COPD but has to work in a factory with no PPE (there is some social distancing, it's a large building and they take temperatures and test weekly - Chinese-owned). He's on a zero-hours contract so has no choice.

This doesn't mean it makes sense for school staff to be standing in front of 180 teenagers a day in poorly-ventilated classrooms. It will also prevent me from seeing my dad.

Isthisadaggerisee · 29/08/2020 20:17

‘Did you read the title before you started posting?’

Yes I read the original post and I think the OP is BU.

SmileEachDay · 29/08/2020 20:31

Isthisadaggerisee

Is it unreasonable to expect a government department to publish guidance accurately?

FrippEnos · 29/08/2020 20:32

So you have just mixed up sorry for and angry?

Isthisadaggerisee · 29/08/2020 20:51

‘Is it unreasonable to expect a government department to publish guidance accurately?’

This government? They’re a joke. But it’s not just teachers who are having to deal with an upside down world and our shoddy government .So do I feel sorry for them because of this. Not really for all the reasonA stated before. Which was the OPs original AIBU

Isthisadaggerisee · 29/08/2020 20:53

And if one more teacher tells me their school
Is ‘open’ I will bloody scream. Schools have NOT been open to the majority of state pupils. End. Of.

Not in our control. We have been there, teaching the pupils who were allowed to be there.

And those of us who weren't in the building were teaching remotely.
Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2020 20:59

To be fair, at the moment it is the summer holidays so schools are closed. Apart from Leicester where schools definitely are open.

Dominicgoings · 29/08/2020 21:00

‘And those of us who weren't in the building were teaching remotely’

SOME of you were teaching remotely. SOME.

SmileEachDay · 29/08/2020 21:01

This government? They’re a joke

I agree.

But it’s not just teachers who are having to deal with an upside down world and our shoddy government

No, it’s not.

I’m massively concerned about the children at my school - I want their return to school to be as smooth and consistent as possible. I want it to be proper planned rather than stuck together at the last minute.

So do I feel sorry for them because of this. Not really for all the reasonA stated before. Which was the OPs original AIBU

The OP said she was angry. I’m really angry about the way the government has under funded education for a decade AND how they have let down schools and communities during covid.

I’m also angry about similar underfunding in other public sector services, but that’s for a different thread.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2020 21:03

No dominic MOST

ohthegoats · 29/08/2020 21:08

Every teacher I know was remote teaching. Every teacher I know had lots of thanks from parents too.
