To be really angry on behalf of teachers

789 replies

Jessicabrassica · 29/08/2020 07:51

I know mumsnet loves a bit of teacher bashing.
I'm really angry that once again the Department for Education has put out guidance for schools in a Friday night before a long weekend with some schools having already started and others back next week.
I cannot imagine how many iterations of risk assessments have already been completed to make schools as safe as possible given the constraints of staff numbers, building size and requirements to get every child back in school.
They are getting enough PPE to tick the box that it's been issued to all schools but not enough to be useful.
Teachers mostly haven't stopped working since the pandemic began. They have continued to teach, to support vulnerable learners, provided meals and good parcels out of school funds in lieu of FSM, they remained open through school holidays for key worker provision.
I really feel that they have been well and truly fucked over, left massively vulnerable and will be left to carry the can for community outbreaks.

I'm a parent and work for the NHS if it's if any consequence.

Openly having hobbies and not having the decency to feel ashamed' (I'm paraphrasing), 'teachers need to play their part in society' Moaning', 'crack on', 'snowflakes', 'whining', 'get a grip', 'paid with our money', 'don't live in the real world', 'teachers just love to sodding moan', ‘Thank goodness nurses and doctors carries on without the same fuss.’, ‘our teAchers will close the school again at the drop of a hat.’ ‘If only teachers put as much energy into re-opening schools as they seem to complaining about how unfair it all is on them.’ ‘There has been no particular spreading of COVID in schools and no reason to be concerned ‘ ‘Shit at their jobs (and parents can do it better but we still want teachers to do it even though they’re shit).’ ‘gas lighting.’ ‘Some people just seem to want lockdown to last forever.’

Also lots around the theme of ‘I’ve been treated really badly at work, so why shouldn’t teachers be?’

I’ve seen at least three more examples of the last one.

Late lunch for me. Keep it up!

Isthisadaggerisee · 29/08/2020 14:19

@CayrolBaaaskin Amen to that. All these teachers working harder than ever... whatever. I know several teachers who are happy to admit that they were babysitting key workers kids and no, it wasn’t anything near as stressful or challenging as teaching a full week with a full classroom.

HelloMissus · 29/08/2020 14:20

fripp not all schools turned into hubbs. That’s simply not true.
Neither of my foster children’s schools did. The teachers there were not working on site (nor at the school that became the local hub).
Yet they did not even acknowledge communications about the most vulnerable pupils (from us or the key worker).

That is my experience.
And you can be as snarky as you like (I’m not surprised- nothing will surprise me from now on when it comes to teachers and vulnerable pupils).

FrippEnos · 29/08/2020 14:20
@itsgettingweird - if you didn’t realise the schools were closed I would suggest trying to get a gp appointment (they are still working).
Have you tried getting a GP appointment and the multiple steps that are now in place to do so?
Or tried going to a dentist recently and the precautions that they have put in place?

MrsHamlet · 29/08/2020 14:20

@Isthisadaggerisee

If only teachers put as much energy into re-opening schools as they seem to complaining about how unfair it all is on them. but we never closed! Honestly, it's like trying to play chess with a pigeon‘

Fine, fine. Our school had around 20 key worker kids in each day - the school
Was essentially CLOSED to all other kids. Teachers saying we’re never closed’ is being disingenuous at best and parents aren’t idiots.

The buildings might have been closed because the government closed them, but teachers were still teaching remotely.
Backtobasics5 · 29/08/2020 14:20

@StaffAssociationRepresentative

We were open for key worker children. That includes the children of NHS workers
There really were not that many kids that attended the hubs though. Schools merged together and not all kids attended everyday. So all the teachers (most) were not needed infact at my school it was not the qualified teachers that looked after the children.
FoolsAssassin · 29/08/2020 14:22

Not saying I believe it to be the case but I could absolutely understand why some of the more cynical amongst could be thinking we are seeing paid shills at work again with the whole ‘I can’t believe people like you who want lockdown to last forever ‘ narrative being checked around at any hint of criticism against the Government.

Given a lot of us have seen things like this time and time again eg. Anything against Conservatives resulted in going on about how you worshipped at Corbyn’s feet, it is not surprising there could be some amongst us growing increasingly cynical.

noblegiraffe · 29/08/2020 14:22

I bet the teacher bashers voted Tory and would rather blame teachers for their inadequate choice than actually reflect on the part they have played in this.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 29/08/2020 14:22

@CayrolBaaaskin who is Bobby?

FrippEnos · 29/08/2020 14:22

HelloMissus

I'm replying to snarky with snarky.
I am so far passed playing nice teacher on here.

So post in whatever vein you like, I'm just going to post back in the same way.

As for your experience, I believe you.
but many on here are tarring teachers all with the same brush and that isn't right.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/08/2020 14:23

Schools were also told they could not teach the vulnerable/key worker children as this would be giving them an advantage over the children at home. If you want to complain about this complain to the Government.

noblegiraffe · 29/08/2020 14:24

seeing paid shills at work again

Some are paid shills (we know the government has recruited 'social media influencers' for their PR campaign and they've certainly infiltrated MN before).

Some are just a bunch of scientifically illiterate wankers from Facebook who really hate MN because they keep getting their arses handed to them on a plate here.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 29/08/2020 14:24

@noblegiraffe - perfect you have nailed it!

We have the U4T Tory crowd in ......

mummag · 29/08/2020 14:24

@CayrolBaaaskin

^This.

You are a right charmer with this remark. Teachers didn't decide to close schools in case you were not aware, and they have been planning and getting ready. They will be ready and school will happen. Then what will you people get to bitch and moan about.
CayrolBaaaskin · 29/08/2020 14:24

@FrippEnos - I got a face to face GP appointment last week thanks. I called and they saw me a few hours later. So perfectly possible (esp if you’re suffering major delusions like pp)

Very true Noble...
MsTSwift · 29/08/2020 14:26

Obviously not tarring all teachers
I have never voted Tory 🙄
Both my parents were and my sister is a teacher
From mid March the majority of the teachers at my second child’s primary vanished. That’s just a fact however unpalatable.
Teachers at my elder dds secondary were great and taught throughout.

FrippEnos · 29/08/2020 14:26

@CayrolBaaaskin

Yet mine are still doing phone assessments.
Its almost as if GPs are doing things in different ways.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2020 14:26

This idea of teachers only working if they were at a hub and physically visible is such an obvious signifier of our obsession with presenteeism.

I don't think they are paid shills fwiw. Bullies. Unpleasant people. People with some sort of axe to grind about teachers. people who generalise their specific experience to all schools and all teachers. People who are bored. People who don't want to acknowledge the DfE is a shower of shite. People who think AIBU is fun and games.

Yet if they were really interested in what teachers were doing they could look up all the old threads where is was hashed through to death.

HelloMissus · 29/08/2020 14:29

piggy or people who took in emmergecy foster children during lockdown and couldn’t even get a response from their teachers, let alone work or an online lesson.

CayrolBaaaskin · 29/08/2020 14:29

@mummag - who said teachers decided to close schools? What are you talking about.

@noblegiraffe - lol at paid shills infiltrating mn. Yeah, that’s why no one can be doing with some (and it is some) teachers constantly whining about how they have it uniquely difficult.

noblegiraffe · 29/08/2020 14:30

Piggy you know that the government is running a massively expensive campaign to convince parents that it's safe to send their kids to school, including using social media, and you don't think they've popped anyone a few quid to come on here and challenge the 'government are shit and can't be trusted to do anything right' line by passing the blame to teachers just like the Tories have been doing all along?

CayrolBaaaskin · 29/08/2020 14:31

@Piggywaspushed - maybe people can disagree with you without being bad people. Just an 💡

noblegiraffe · 29/08/2020 14:31

lol at paid shills infiltrating mn

Christ you're naive. We had a bunch of paid Russian shills on here during the Brexit campaign, and when the Salisbury poisoning happened.
